For a cautious first manual flight, DJI recommends Normal (N) mode and the Brake obstacle-avoidance setting for novice pilots. Use an open, well-lit area, keep the drone in visual line of sight, and check local airspace rules before takeoff.
1. Identify your controller and the right setup path
DJI lists the RC 2, RC-N3, and RC-N2 as compatible with Flip. The steps differ most for the RC 2 and RC-N3; for an RC-N2 package, follow the Quick Start Guide included for that controller rather than assuming another controller’s steps apply. DJI says a Flip sold with a controller is linked to it at shipment. DJI’s support page lists compatibility, while the DJI Flip Download Center provides controller-specific Quick Start Guides and Safety Guidelines.

DJI says Flip can only be used with DJI Fly. Check DJI’s download center for the current app and device-support information, since compatibility can change.
2. Wake and charge the battery
The battery is shipped in hibernation for transport. Insert it into the aircraft or charging hub and connect the battery charger to wake and activate it. DJI’s power-on instructions say to press the aircraft power button once, then press it again and hold for two seconds.

DJI estimates approximately 70 minutes to fully charge one battery using the method in its Beginner’s Guide; actual charge time can vary with the charger and conditions. Charge the controller and mobile device as well, so they have enough power for setup and flight.
3. Install DJI Fly, activate, and update
- Prepare an internet connection. For RC-N3, attach an internet-connected phone to the controller. For RC 2, connect the controller to Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot.
- Open DJI Fly and follow first-use prompts. Keep the phone online during aircraft activation. DJI’s guide says the aircraft must be activated in DJI Fly before its first use.
- Install an offered firmware update. Follow the in-app instructions. DJI advises not to power off the mobile device or exit DJI Fly during an update. The aircraft powers off automatically when the update is complete; restart it manually afterward.
Firmware and app versions change, so use the live DJI Flip Download Center rather than relying on an old version number.
4. Inspect the aircraft before takeoff
With the aircraft powered off, complete DJI’s basic preflight inspection:

- Remove the gimbal protector.
- Confirm the battery, propellers, and control sticks are installed securely.
- Fully unfold the front and rear arms.
- Check charge levels on the aircraft, controller, and mobile device.
- Inspect the propellers. They are installed on delivery; do not fly with a broken or deformed propeller. Follow DJI’s replacement tutorial if one needs replacing.
DJI’s current manual and safety materials are available in the Download Center; its listed Flip User Manual v1.2 is dated 2025-05-23, and the RC-N3 and RC 2 Quick Start Guides v1.0 are dated 2025-01-14.

Use Normal mode for manual flying
Set the controller to Normal (N) mode for a first manual flight. DJI recommends the “Brake” obstacle-avoidance setting for novice users. Obstacle avoidance is supported during manual flight and Return to Home, but not during intelligent shooting or other intelligent flight features; Sport (S) mode disables obstacle avoidance. Treat sensing as assistance, not a guarantee against collisions.
Pick an open, well-lit area
Choose a location with good lighting and room to maneuver. Keep the aircraft within visual line of sight and away from obstacles, crowds, and water. Avoid taking off or landing on sand, fallen leaves, or small, light objects that could be pulled into the aircraft. DJI’s general guidance says to stay at least 6 m above water; palm control has a separate instruction not to fly over water.

Check airspace, weather, and local requirements
Before flying, check current flight zones, restrictions, and requirements for your location. DJI directs users to “Before You Fly” in DJI Fly for GEO Zone information; also check the relevant aviation authority and local rules. A low product weight does not by itself establish that a flight is exempt from local requirements.
DJI says Flip is not waterproof. If rain begins in flight, return and land promptly, then wait until the aircraft is fully dry inside and out before using it again. DJI specifies wind resistance up to 38 kph (Level 5), but that is a product specification, not a beginner operating target; choose mild conditions for a first flight.

6. Choose how you will control the Flip
Controller-based manual flight
A conventional remote controller offers the full control experience and is the clearest choice for learning basic flight. Follow the controller’s on-screen prompts and the Quick Start Guide for your package.

DJI Fly app control
DJI describes the app’s virtual joysticks as useful for fine position adjustments while filming or returning the drone, not as an equivalent to a traditional controller. DJI lists app-control limits of 30 m maximum height and 50 m maximum distance.
Palm control
DJI’s Beginner’s Guide lists palm-control limits of 30 m maximum altitude and 50 m maximum distance. Turn off connected remote-control devices before using it. For takeoff, hold the aircraft body from below with fingers clear of the propeller rotation area; if taking off from an open palm, extend your fingers. For landing, extend your arm horizontally, place your hand below the aircraft, and wait for it to land. Do not grab the sides as you would when holding it for takeoff. Do not fly over water in palm control.
