Set up five lifecycle automations: welcome new subscribers, browse abandonment, abandoned cart or checkout, post-purchase follow-up, and winback. Each depends on accurate store events, clear entry and exit rules, and a test before activation. Exact flow names, event availability, timing controls, templates, and plan limits vary by platform and integration; the steps below use Shopify and Klaviyo as concrete examples.
Which automated emails should every online store have?
These five flows cover key moments from subscription through a period of inactivity. They are separate from transactional notices such as order confirmations and shipping updates, which may be handled by different systems.
| Flow | Trigger | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome | An eligible new subscriber joins the email list | Introduce the store and help the subscriber discover relevant products |
| Browse abandonment | A visitor views a product but does not add it to a cart, start checkout, or order | Offer a light reminder about the product viewed |
| Cart or checkout recovery | A shopper leaves a cart or checkout without placing an order | Help the shopper return to the saved cart or checkout |
| Post-purchase follow-up | An order is placed | Provide relevant care, onboarding, or service information |
| Winback | A customer goes a defined period without another purchase | Reconnect with a lapsed customer using context relevant to their past purchase |
The distinction between browse and cart recovery matters: viewing a product indicates less purchase intent than adding it to a cart or beginning checkout. If both flows are active, use exclusions so the same shopper does not receive overlapping reminders.
How do I set up automated emails for my online store?
- Connect the store and verify event sync. Confirm that subscriber, viewed-product, cart or checkout, order, and unsubscribe data reach the email platform as expected. With a custom integration, event delays can make a recovery message stale by the time it sends.
- Choose one flow for each lifecycle event. A platform’s prebuilt automation can save setup time, but inspect its trigger, dynamic product or order content, and filters rather than assuming the defaults fit your store. Shopify Messaging documents automations for welcome, post-purchase, browse, cart, and checkout; Klaviyo documents event-triggered flows with filters and delays. Shopify’s email automation documentation and Klaviyo’s flow documentation explain their respective tools.
- Define entry conditions and suppression rules. Decide who can enter each flow and check again before sending whether the person has since purchased or advanced to checkout. Suppress browse messages after a cart addition or checkout start when those actions move the shopper into another recovery flow.
- Choose delays to suit the event and data timing. Do not copy one delay across every flow. Klaviyo recommends waiting at least one hour for browse abandonment and advises filtering out people who have added to cart, checked out, or purchased. That guidance is specific to its browse flow, not a universal timing rule. See Klaviyo’s browse abandonment setup guidance.
- Write, preview, and test the message. Check the sender name, subject line, personalization, and dynamic content. Send a test and confirm the intended test profile enters the intended flow before activation. Shopify’s documentation covers test sends and activation steps in its email automation guide.
- Activate and review reports. Check automation reporting after launch and adjust triggers, filters, timing, or content based on your store’s results. Platform guidance does not establish a universal revenue lift or recovery rate for these flows.
How to configure each of the five flows
1. Welcome new subscribers
Start the flow when an eligible subscriber joins the newsletter list. Introduce the store, explain what makes its products useful, and give the reader a clear next step, such as browsing a relevant category. Shopify offers a welcome-new-subscribers automation, and Klaviyo recommends a list-triggered welcome flow. Make sure email consent is tracked separately from consent for any other marketing channel; subscribing to email does not itself establish consent for a different channel.

2. Browse abandonment
Use a viewed-product event as the trigger, then exclude visitors who add the item to a cart, begin checkout, or place an order before the message is due. This is a gentle reminder, not a substitute for the higher-intent cart or checkout recovery flow. First confirm that your integration reliably records viewed-product events. Klaviyo recommends a delay of at least one hour for this flow and filters for later shopping actions; the appropriate controls may differ on another platform.
3. Abandoned cart or checkout
Choose the event your platform reliably exposes. A cart-abandonment trigger and a checkout-abandonment trigger are not interchangeable: platforms may track them separately, and a shopper can progress from one state to the other. Shopify provides separate cart and checkout recovery options; Klaviyo documents both types of flow. Verify event synchronization before selecting a delay, and suppress the message if an order is placed before it sends. Keep the email focused on returning to the saved cart or checkout rather than diverting the shopper to unrelated products. See Shopify’s recovery automation guidance and Klaviyo’s cart and checkout flow guidance.

4. Post-purchase follow-up
Trigger this flow from a placed-order event. Match the follow-up to the product: useful content might explain care, setup, onboarding, or how to get service. Keep promotional recommendations distinct from transactional order and shipping messages. Where purchase data supports it, exclude products the customer already bought from recommendations. Shopify and Klaviyo both document post-purchase automation options.
5. Winback
Trigger the flow after a defined period without another purchase. Set that period according to the product’s typical replenishment or repurchase cycle: a consumable may call for a different interval than an infrequently replaced item. The platform documentation does not establish one universally correct number of days. Segment by prior purchase where possible, and avoid sending the same discount to every lapsed customer regardless of what they bought.

Shopify Messaging or Klaviyo: what should I compare?
Shopify Messaging is a native option for Shopify merchants, with documented lifecycle automations and reporting. Klaviyo provides event-triggered flows, filters, delays, and templates. Neither platform’s feature list alone determines whether a flow will work well for a particular store: the integration must expose the events and product data the flow needs.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Store integration and event coverage | Triggers depend on reliable subscriber, product-view, cart or checkout, and order data. |
| Trigger and filter controls | Entry rules and suppression checks help prevent stale or overlapping sends. |
| Dynamic content | Product, cart, or order details must populate correctly in each recipient’s message. |
| Testing and activation | You should be able to preview, test, and verify a flow before it goes live. |
| Reporting and plan limits | Reporting helps you review results; account limits may constrain how many messages can run. |
Klaviyo’s Help Center says its Starter free plan allows up to three automated messages live at once. This is a plan-specific limit that may change, so check the current terms for your account before planning all five flows. See Klaviyo’s Starter plan documentation. Shopify points merchants to Shopify Flow for custom automations or workflows involving third-party apps.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What compliance checks should I make before sending?
Rules depend on the recipient’s location. For U.S. commercial email, the Federal Trade Commission’s CAN-SPAM compliance guide says messages need accurate header information, non-deceptive subject lines, a valid physical postal address, and a clear way to opt out. Businesses must honor opt-out requests within 10 business days and remain responsible for monitoring vendors sending on their behalf.
The FTC distinguishes transactional or relationship messages from commercial messages based on their primary purpose. A promotional post-purchase email does not become transactional simply because the recipient has bought something. For recipients outside the United States, identify the applicable jurisdiction and obtain appropriate legal review rather than assuming U.S. requirements cover every audience.
