Suyu can run Nintendo Switch software on a Windows PC, but setup requires more than downloading an emulator. You need a 64-bit Windows installation, suitable graphics hardware, keys and system files dumped from your own Switch, and legally dumped game files.
The official Suyu release repository currently lists v0.0.3, published April 12, 2024. Its release notes say that firmware 17.0.0 is the only officially supported version; firmware 18.0.0 has a preliminary fix but is not guaranteed. Be cautious with websites advertising a newer “official” Windows build or downloadable keys.
Check whether your PC can run Suyu
Suyu officially supports:
- 64-bit Windows 10 or newer
- Linux
- Android 11 or newer
This guide focuses on Windows. macOS is no longer a supported platform because Apple deprecated OpenGL, even though older Suyu release notes contain a macOS workaround.

These are baseline requirements, not a promise that every game will run smoothly. Performance varies considerably by game, GPU driver, emulator settings and shader-cache state.

Download the official Windows release
- Open the official Suyu release repository.
- Locate Suyu v0.0.3.
- Download
Suyu-Windows_x86_64.tar.xz. - Extract the archive to a permanent folder, such as
C:EmulatorsSuyu. - Launch the Suyu executable from that folder.
Do not treat a search result claiming “Suyu v22.5.0” as the official current release without verifying it against the project’s release repository. The verified official repository lists v0.0.3 as its newest binary release.
Install the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime if Suyu will not start
On Windows, errors mentioning VCRUNTIME140_1.dll or MSVCP140_ATOMIC_WAIT.dll generally mean the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime is missing. Download the latest supported Visual C++ package from Microsoft and install the x64 package listed under Visual Studio 2015, 2017 and 2019. Restart Suyu after installation.
Dump your keys and system files
Suyu requires console keys and system files from a Nintendo Switch that you own. Its official FAQ says users must dump their own games and does not provide keys for download. Avoid generic “prod keys” websites: downloaded keys are not an official setup method and may be illegal or unsafe.

Use an appropriate, up-to-date dumping procedure for your own console and keep the resulting files private. This guide does not provide copyrighted game files, console keys, firmware packages or shader caches.
Import the keys on Windows
Suyu stores keys in this Windows directory:
C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingsuyukeysReplace USERNAME with your Windows account name. The keys folder may not exist yet, so create it if necessary.

- Press
Win+R. - Enter
%appdata%suyuand press Enter. - Create a folder named
keysif it is missing. - Copy your dumped
prod.keysandtitle.keysinto that folder. - Start Suyu again.
You can also open the data directory from Suyu’s menu using File > Open Suyu Folder, then open or create the keys folder.
Install compatible firmware
Firmware is separate from the emulator and must also come from your own Switch. For the verified v0.0.3 release, firmware 17.0.0 is the only officially supported version. The release notes mention a preliminary firmware 18.0.0 fix, but do not guarantee compatibility. Do not assume that firmware 22.x is officially supported.
- Start Suyu.
- Open Tools > Install Firmware.
- Select the firmware file or firmware package you dumped from your console.
- Allow the installation to finish before launching a game.
If Suyu reports missing derivation components after this step, check the key filenames and location first. The files must be named prod.keys and title.keys, not prod.keys.txt or another renamed extension.
Add your legally dumped games
Dump your own Switch games using your own console and storage media. Once you have compatible game files, add their containing folder to Suyu’s game list using the emulator’s game-directory option. Keep games in a stable folder rather than a temporary download or removable drive that may change letters.
Do not download game ROMs, keys, firmware or prebuilt shader caches. Apart from the legal issue, files from those sources are a common way to acquire malware or corrupted data.
Install game updates and DLC
Game updates and DLC are installed separately through Suyu:

- Select the update or DLC file dumped from your own console.
- Wait for the installation to complete.
- Check the game list’s add-ons column.
To enable or disable an installed item, right-click the game, choose Properties, and toggle the relevant update or DLC. To remove one, right-click the game, choose Remove, and select the appropriate update or DLC removal option.
Configure a controller
Open Suyu’s settings and select Controls. For most games:
- Check Connect Controller.
- Choose Pro Controller.
- Select your gamepad under Input Device.
- Confirm the automatically mapped buttons.
- For keyboard controls, click Defaults, then change individual mappings if required.
- Click OK.
Pokémon Let’s Go uses a different profile: select Handheld instead of Pro Controller, choose the input device, apply keyboard defaults if needed, and click OK.
Install mods and cheats
To open a game’s mod directory, right-click the game in the Suyu list and select Open Mod Data Location. The folder structure must use a mod-name directory containing either romfs or exefs:

Transfer a save
- Right-click the game in the games list.
- Select Open Save Data Location.
- Choose the destination user profile in Profile Selector.
- Place the compatible save in the folder Suyu displays.
Back up the existing save before replacing anything. A save from a different region, title version or user profile may not load correctly.

Fix common Suyu problems
“Broken Vulkan Installation Detected”
This message means Vulkan initialization failed during the previous Suyu boot. Update your GPU driver, then temporarily disable or uninstall troublesome overlays and screen-injection tools. The FAQ specifically identifies ReShade, GShade, Bandicam, Action, Screenrec and Overwolf as possible causes of configuration crashes.
Then run Suyu’s test from Emulation > Configure > Graphics > Check for Working Vulkan. OBS Studio, Radeon ReLive, Nvidia ShadowPlay and Xbox Game Bar are listed as preferable recording options.

This error is shown as:
Unable to start application: Os { code: 2, kind: NotFound, message: “The system cannot find the file specified.” }The official FAQ attributes this commonly to antivirus false positives, particularly Avast and AVG, deleting the Suyu executable. Check the antivirus quarantine and restore or allow the file only if you obtained Suyu from a trusted official release source. Do not blindly disable security software for an unknown build.
Suyu will not update or shows a Qt platform error
- Close every Suyu window and installer process.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
%localappdata%. - Delete the
suyufolder. - Relaunch the installer and reinstall Suyu.
This removes the local installation data. It does not remove keys or saves, which are stored under %appdata%suyu.
Suyu closes when you open Configure
Press Win+R, enter %appdata%suyuconfig, and delete qt-config.ini. This resets Suyu’s global settings. It does not delete your keys or game saves.
“WerFault.exe – Application Error”
The Suyu FAQ typically associates this error with running out of RAM. Increasing the Windows pagefile size can help when physical memory is insufficient. Close other memory-heavy programs first, then test Suyu again.

Stutter during the first launch
Initial stutter and long pauses are often shader compilation rather than a damaged game. Suyu translates Switch shaders into a PC-compatible format as new effects appear, which can temporarily freeze or slow gameplay.
The precompiled shader cache may be rebuilt after updating Suyu or installing a new GPU driver, so the next launch can take longer. Vulkan and OpenGL use separate caches; Nvidia’s GLASM and GLSL OpenGL backends share the same cache. Do not download shader caches from the internet—the official FAQ rejects that practice as piracy-related.

Is Suyu still officially available for Windows?

Why does Suyu stutter when a game first starts?
Suyu may be compiling shaders as the game encounters new visual effects. This can cause first-launch pauses and stutter. The cache may also be rebuilt after an emulator update or GPU-driver update.
The Bottom Line
For a clean Suyu setup, use the verified v0.0.3 release, Windows 10 64-bit or newer, a GPU with OpenGL 4.6 support, at least 8 GB of RAM, your own dumped keys and system files, and your own legally dumped games. Install firmware through Tools > Install Firmware, add updates through File > Install Files to NAND, and troubleshoot graphics or configuration files before changing unrelated settings.
