Steam Frame is designed to stream games wirelessly from a PC. Its included wireless adapter provides a direct 6GHz link between the headset and PC; the headset also has a separate Wi-Fi connection. For the exact first-run sequence, follow Valve’s Getting Started with Steam Frame video rather than guessing at button presses or menu steps.
What you need to know before setup
Valve describes Steam Frame as a wireless VR headset with an included plug-and-play 6GHz wireless adapter for a direct headset-to-PC connection. The adapter is included, so a separate adapter is not needed for this basic connection. Valve says one headset radio is dedicated to streaming audio and visuals while another connects to Wi-Fi. Its Multi-Link Streaming feature can route data over available headset connections to improve streaming stability; these are product descriptions, not independent performance measurements. Valve’s setup-resource announcement links to a dedicated Getting Started video and a second video about accessories. The announcement’s text does not spell out the headset’s first-run sequence, so use the video for the actual startup and pairing instructions rather than relying on unverified button or menu directions. Set up the PC streaming connection
- Use Valve’s first-run guide. Open the Getting Started with Steam Frame video from Valve’s setup-resource announcement and follow its startup and pairing sequence.
- Use the included wireless adapter for the PC link. Valve describes it as a plug-and-play 6GHz link between the headset and PC for streaming VR and non-VR content. Follow the video’s instructions for connecting and pairing it; the product-page description alone does not establish the exact physical connection or on-screen steps.
- Keep Wi-Fi in perspective. The headset’s Wi-Fi connection is separate from the adapter’s dedicated streaming link, according to Valve’s dual-radio description. Do not treat the adapter as a replacement for Wi-Fi in every headset function.
Valve describes the adapter link and Multi-Link Streaming as features intended to support low-latency, stable streaming. These are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee of a particular latency or performance in every home network.

Choose between streaming from a PC and standalone play
PC streaming is not the only way to use Steam Frame. Valve says it runs SteamOS and can run some games directly on the headset. In a PC-streaming session, the game runs on the PC and its audio and visuals are streamed to the headset; in standalone play, a compatible game runs on the headset without an active PC stream.

Valve’s Steamworks Development team described Steam Frame on June 4, 2026 as primarily designed for high-quality game streaming from a PC, while also being a full PC running SteamOS with standalone capabilities. The distinction matters when choosing a title: a game’s standalone designation answers a different question from whether it can be streamed from a PC. See Valve’s Steamworks Development announcement.

Troubleshoot Error 17 connection issues
In a Valve community update dated October 1, 2026, Valve said SteamOS 0.4.3 beta included further VR streaming reliability improvements and advised PC users to opt into SteamVR 2.18.2 or later to reduce Error 17 connection issues. At the time of that update, Valve said SteamVR 2.18.2 was available on the SteamVR beta branch. This is dated, beta-specific guidance, not a permanent requirement for every setup; check Valve’s SteamVR community updates for the current status before changing beta software.

The cited Valve product information says the wireless adapter is included. It also lists optional accessories, including a 45W power supply, but does not establish that an extra accessory is required to make the basic PC streaming connection. Check the current Getting Started and accessories videos for what is included in your package and any instructions specific to your unit.
