Create a separate guest or IoT network in your router’s app or administration page, then move smart-home devices onto it and test the controls you use. A separate Wi-Fi name does not automatically mean devices are isolated: check the router’s settings and confirm that your phone, hub, and automations still work.

Why put smart-home devices on a separate network?

Separating smart devices from computers and phones can limit how far a compromised or vulnerable device can reach across your home network. It is a protective layer, not a guarantee that a device is secure. NIST recommends separating IoT devices with known security risks from everyday computing devices where possible, alongside practices such as keeping devices updated and maintaining visibility into what is connected. NIST’s home and small-business IoT guidance explains these protections.

Segmentation can also be more detailed than simply using a second Wi-Fi name. CISA describes VLANs, router access-control lists, stateful inspection, and firewall capabilities as ways to control traffic between network segments. Its guidance is written for communications infrastructure; the household takeaway is to use controls your router actually supports, rather than assume every consumer guest network works the same way. CISA’s guidance outlines these mechanisms.

Choose a separate guest network, IoT network, or VLAN

Option Best suited to What to check
Guest or IoT Wi-Fi network A household whose existing router offers a separate network with useful isolation controls. Whether it blocks access to your main network and whether it permits the device-to-device communication your setup needs. A separate SSID alone does not prove isolation.
VLAN with firewall rules Owners who want more granular traffic policies and have compatible network equipment. Router and access-point VLAN support, any required compatible wired gear, and the rules controlling traffic between segments. This gives more control but takes more configuration.
Separate physical router or network Homes whose current equipment cannot provide the desired separation. Added equipment and the extra work of managing another network. A replacement router is not necessary for every household.

For many homes, the practical first step is to see whether the router already offers an isolated guest or IoT network. If you are considering equipment because the current router lacks the controls you need, compare its VLAN support, guest-network isolation, configurable firewall rules, and security-update policy. NIST’s consumer-router security requirements provide context for evaluating router security features.

Set up the network and connect your devices

Router menus and capabilities vary by model and software version, so use the current instructions for your specific router rather than relying on a universal click path.

  1. Open the router’s app or administration page. Look for labels such as “Guest network,” “IoT network,” “VLAN,” or “Network segmentation.” Consult the router maker’s current model-specific instructions if you cannot find these options.
  2. Create a distinct Wi-Fi network. Choose a network name and a strong, unique password. If the router provides isolation settings, check what they block and whether devices on the new network can still reach the internet and one another as required.
  3. Connect smart devices using their setup apps. Follow each device maker’s current setup instructions and network specifications. Do not assume every device has the same Wi-Fi-band requirements.
  4. Test the household’s actual control paths. Confirm devices appear online in their apps, hubs or controllers can reach them, automations run, and local controls work where you expect them to.
  5. Maintain the network and devices. Install router firmware and device software updates, keep an inventory of connected devices, and consider replacing devices that no longer receive security support when practical.

Fix control or discovery problems without removing all isolation

A phone app, hub, or smart device may need to discover or communicate with another device across network boundaries. Strong isolation can interrupt those paths, and compatibility depends on the router and devices involved. If a device stops responding after you move it, troubleshoot the specific function rather than turning off every security control by default.

What VLANs and MUD add—and what they do not

A VLAN creates a logical network segment; firewall rules determine which traffic may pass between segments. Together, these controls can offer more precise separation than a basic guest-network toggle, but they require compatible equipment and correct configuration. CISA identifies VLANs and router or firewall controls as segmentation mechanisms in its communications-infrastructure guidance; a consumer router’s specific capabilities may differ. NIST also describes Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD), a specialized capability that can restrict a compatible IoT device to the network traffic needed for its intended function. MUD should not be assumed to be available on a typical home router or supported by every smart device. NIST SP 1800-15 describes this approach.

For advanced network onboarding, NIST’s final SP 1800-36, published November 25, 2025, describes verifying device and network identity and posture before providing network credentials, then managing device posture over its lifecycle. This is advanced security context, not a feature to expect in an ordinary consumer router. See NIST SP 1800-36.
