To stop your microphone from transmitting low-level sound during pauses in XSplit Broadcaster, enable Noise Gate and tune its threshold while watching the VU meter. XSplit calls this feature Noise Gate, not “silence detection”: audio above your chosen threshold passes, while audio below it is blocked.
Set up Noise Gate in XSplit Broadcaster

Choose the microphone you want to control. Go to Tools > Settings > Audio and check the selected capture device.

Open Tools > Audio Effects. Alternatively, open the Audio settings and click the gear icon beside the microphone dropdown to open Audio Effects properties.

Enable Noise Gate. Adjust its threshold while watching the displayed VU meter. The aim is for quiet background signal to fall below the threshold and ordinary speech to remain above it. XSplit does not publish a universal recommended threshold, so set it for your microphone and room rather than relying on a preset number.

Open Tools > Audio Mixer to monitor the microphone on its own. Keep its level below the red range to avoid clipping or crackling.

Test your normal speaking voice and pauses in the setup you will actually use. If the gate cuts off speech, lower the threshold; if quiet background sound still gets through, raise it carefully and test again.

The threshold adjustments are practical tuning guidance based on how XSplit describes the gate; they are not a vendor-prescribed setting or a tested threshold value.
Noise Gate, Noise Suppression, or Push to Talk?
| Option | How it responds | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Noise Gate | Blocks audio below a manually set level and passes audio above it. | You want low-level microphone sound reduced during pauses. |
| Noise Suppression | Automatically detects and removes noise. | You want automatic background-noise treatment rather than threshold-based muting. |
| Push to Talk | Keeps the microphone muted until you press its assigned hotkey. | You want to control when the microphone transmits with a key press. |
These controls are not interchangeable: Noise Gate reacts to signal level, Noise Suppression treats noise automatically, and Push to Talk responds to a hotkey.

Troubleshoot a gate that does not behave as expected
Speech is cut off
Lower the Noise Gate threshold and test your usual speaking volume again. A threshold set too high can leave speech below the level that opens the gate.
Background sound still passes
Raise the threshold gradually while monitoring the VU meter, then confirm that ordinary speech still passes. If the unwanted sound is background noise rather than quiet audio during pauses, try Noise Suppression instead.

The microphone level sounds distorted or crackles
Check the microphone in Tools > Audio Mixer and keep its level below the red range. Noise Gate does not replace setting an appropriate input level.
The effect is missing or the wrong microphone is affected
Confirm the capture device under Tools > Settings > Audio, then reopen Tools > Audio Effects or the gear beside the microphone dropdown. XSplit’s interface labels may change; the official Noise Gate guidance does not identify a publication or update date for that effect.
