To follow Sensex or Nifty movements without a stream of stock-market news, set a small number of notification-only alerts in a broker app or web platform you already use. Search for the exact index, choose a level or percentage condition that answers a specific question, and confirm that the alert will notify you rather than place an order. Alert options differ by provider, and an index alert is information—not a buy or sell signal.
Set up a focused index alert
- Open your existing broker app or web platform. Search for the exact instrument you want to follow. Platforms may show multiple indices or related instruments, so check that the result is Sensex or the intended Nifty index.
- Create a condition with a clear purpose. Choose an absolute level or percentage move if the platform offers it. For example, an alert can tell you when an index reaches a level you want to review; it does not establish that the level is a good time to trade. Start with only alerts that answer a specific monitoring question. There is no established scientifically optimal threshold or alert count.
- Choose notification-only behavior and check delivery. Confirm whether the alert arrives in the app, by email, or through another supported channel. Zerodha says Kite alerts can be created in its app or web interface, with notifications in Kite and by email. Its documented conditions include price, percentage change, volume, and other data points. See Zerodha’s Kite alerts documentation.
- Check the alert type before saving. In Zerodha, Alert Trigger Orders (ATO) are distinct from ordinary alerts: an ATO can place a linked basket of orders when its condition is met. If you only want to observe an index, do not enable an order-triggering feature by mistake. Read how Zerodha describes ATO.
- Save the alert and check its expiry. Rename it so the index and condition are obvious, then note when it expires and how to edit or remove it. Limits vary by provider and can change; check the current terms in the app or help center.
What alert features do these providers document?
These are examples from provider documentation, not a ranking or endorsement. Verify the current app screens and terms before relying on an alert.

When comparing options, check whether the exact index is listed, whether you can set a level or percentage condition, how alerts are delivered, whether the feature can submit orders, and what limits and expiry apply. Do not confuse index alerts with account-activity alerts
NSE’s trade-alert facility sends SMS or email notifications to retail investors about their trades conducted on NSE, after market hours; it is not a notification that Sensex or Nifty crossed a chosen threshold. NSE explains its trade alerts here. SEBI Investor also describes free SMS and email alerts for trading or demat account transaction activity. Use notifications as context, not instructions
An index crossing a threshold tells you that a condition occurred; by itself, it does not tell you what to do. Before saving an alert, decide what information you want it to provide and what you will check when it arrives. Review relevant context before making an investment decision rather than treating the notification as a buy or sell recommendation.
