To track new work by an author, use Google Alerts for web-wide mentions and Google Scholar or Semantic Scholar for scholarly papers. These services notify you about results they find in their own indexes; they are useful monitoring tools, not guaranteed feeds of every article or an immediate notice when something is published.
Choose the right alert for the author’s work
Use a general web alert when you want to find articles, bylines, or pages mentioning an author across Google Search results. For academic papers, set up an author alert in a scholarly service. If you want broader coverage, you can use both: their results may overlap, and neither service promises to find every publication.
| Option | Best for | How you set it up | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Alerts | Web pages, bylines, and general mentions | Enter a search query, adjust the options, and create an alert | It depends on matching Google Search results; coverage is not guaranteed. |
| Google Scholar profile alert | Scholarly articles by an author with a public profile | Follow the profile and select “New articles by this author” | It covers items Scholar finds and associates with that author. |
| Google Scholar author-query alert | Scholarly articles when the author has no profile | Search with an author query and create an alert from the results | Names shared by multiple researchers can produce unrelated results. |
| Semantic Scholar author alert | New scholarly papers or citations associated with an author | Create an alert from the author page and choose an alert type | Coverage and author matching depend on Semantic Scholar’s index. |

-
Create the alert. Google says it emails when it finds matching new search results.
-
Review the results. If unrelated people or pages dominate, refine the query with a middle name, recurring byline form, subject, or publication, then adjust the alert.
The available choices can vary by locale or interface. Google’s settings include options such as “as-it-happens,” at most once a day, and at most once a week, along with source categories such as news, blogs, web, video, books, discussions, and finance. Use the controls shown in your account. The Google Search Help instructions explain alert creation and settings. Google News Initiative also describes using a byline, name, or website to monitor when work is shared or posted, but that does not mean every item will be indexed (Google Alerts: Stay in the know).

When a name is shared by multiple people, narrow the results with co-author names or relevant research terms. Google Scholar’s Search Help describes profile follows, query alerts, and email verification. It says alerts are sent after new papers are added and that this usually happens several times a week. That describes Scholar’s alert delivery after indexing; it is not a promise of immediate notification after a publisher posts a paper.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Create a Semantic Scholar author alert
-
Open the author’s page on Semantic Scholar.
-
Select Create Alert, choose whether to receive alerts for newly published papers or new citations, and confirm.
Use the new-paper choice to track publications. As with Google Scholar, this alert depends on papers being included in the service’s index and matched to the author. See Semantic Scholar’s Manage alerts instructions.

Improve matches and manage alert noise
-
Start with the author’s profile when one is available, especially for scholarly work.
-
Add distinctive co-authors, research topics, affiliation terms, publication names, or a recognizable byline when a name-only query returns too many matches.
-
Begin with a manageable frequency and result volume. Review what arrives and refine the query based on false matches or missing relevant results.
-
Keep publication alerts separate from citation alerts: one looks for new work by the author, while the other looks for new citations to their existing work.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
For broader discovery, combine a Google Alert with a scholarly author alert. Treat each as a separate monitoring source rather than a complete publication record.
