Add Percy to the Playwright browser tests in your React project by installing @percy/cli and @percy/playwright, placing percySnapshot(page, 'name') calls at the states you want to review, and running the existing Playwright command through npx percy exec. Playwright continues to test behavior; Percy captures selected rendered states for visual comparison.
How the Percy and Playwright workflow fits together
Playwright Test runs browser tests against your React app. Percy adds visual snapshots to selected points in those tests, then compares them with approved baselines so visual differences can be reviewed. A snapshot is not a replacement for an assertion: keep assertions that verify what the app does, and use Percy to review how it looks.
This setup uses the Playwright page in a browser test. It does not require a separate Percy React SDK in the documented workflow.
1. Check that Playwright Test runs
In an existing React project, keep your current app structure and use the Playwright installation appropriate to that project. If Playwright is not installed, its initializer can set up a new project or add Playwright to an existing one:

npm init playwright@latestFollow the prompts, then confirm the test command works:
npx playwright testResolve existing test or browser-installation failures before adding Percy. That gives you a working baseline for distinguishing Playwright problems from Percy integration problems.
2. Install Percy
From the project root, install the Percy CLI and Playwright integration as development dependencies:
npm install --save-dev @percy/cli @percy/playwrightThe CLI will wrap the test command, and the Playwright package provides the snapshot helper. The documented setup example is not a versioned compatibility matrix; check the current package documentation if you need to validate specific package versions or a production rollout.

3. Add snapshots to the React states worth reviewing
Import percySnapshot in a Playwright test and call it after navigation and any actions needed to reach the state. For example:

});The example assumes your app has those labels, button text, and error message; adapt the locators and expected text to the actual UI. The important sequence is to navigate, perform the relevant interaction, establish that the intended state is present, and then capture it.
Choose snapshot points deliberately
- Capture a page’s initial state when its appearance is important.
- Capture post-interaction states such as validation errors, expanded menus, or a completed flow when those states matter to users.
- Use descriptive snapshot names so reviewers can identify the state without inferring it from test code.
Wait for the UI that matters, not an arbitrary delay
Before capturing, wait for the actual user-visible readiness condition: for example, an expected heading to appear or a loading indicator to disappear. Network work, animations, and lazy-loaded content can otherwise make captures inconsistent. A fixed sleep may hide timing problems or waste time; use a condition that reflects when the specific screen is ready. Minimize or stabilize changing content where possible so incidental timestamps, rotating content, or other dynamic regions do not overwhelm meaningful changes.
4. Run Playwright through Percy

npx percy exec -- npx playwright testPercy needs the project token to authenticate snapshot uploads. Make it available to the wrapped process using the current instructions for your Percy project, preferably through your local environment or CI secret management. Do not commit the token to source control. The setup example establishes the wrapper pattern, but not the current account-screen steps or a universal token-variable name; follow the project-specific current guidance for those details.
For a repeatable project command, add a script to package.json alongside your existing test script:

npm run test:visualThis assumes the project has the local Playwright and Percy executables installed as dependencies. Keep the existing non-Percy test command available for runs where you only need behavioral tests.
5. Review differences without weakening behavior checks
Use the test result and visual review for different questions. A failed assertion means a tested behavior or outcome did not meet the test’s expectation. A Percy difference means the rendered appearance differs from the approved baseline and needs inspection. Review each difference; fix an unintended UI change, or approve a baseline update when the appearance change is intentional. Do not update baselines simply to make a run pass without understanding the change.

Troubleshooting
Playwright passes, but Percy snapshots do not upload
Check that the command is running inside percy exec and that the Percy project token is available to that process. Verify token setup against the current Percy project instructions, and keep secrets out of committed files.
The snapshot shows a loading or incomplete state
The capture may run before the app’s relevant work finishes. Add a Playwright wait for the actual ready state, such as a visible page heading or completed result, and account for lazy-loaded content or animations that affect the screen.
Visual differences appear on every run
Look for unstable content or timing: timestamps, randomized data, rotating content, animation, or requests that finish at varying times can create noisy comparisons. Stabilize test data where practical and wait for the specific state under test rather than relying on a broad, arbitrary delay.
The Percy command fails before tests start
Run npx playwright test by itself first. If that fails, resolve the Playwright configuration, test, or browser setup issue before diagnosing Percy. If the plain command works but the wrapped command does not, check the Percy CLI installation and token availability.

A baseline changes after a UI update
Inspect the difference against the intended design and the behavioral assertions. If the new appearance is expected, approve the updated baseline through the review workflow for your Percy project; otherwise, correct the UI or test setup instead.
