Set parental controls in layers: start with your child’s account and device, add controls inside the apps and services they use, then review privacy settings and agree on family habits. These tools can reduce exposure, but they cannot guarantee that every harmful video, website, message, or search result will be blocked.
Start by mapping where your child goes online
Before changing settings, list the devices, accounts, browsers, video services, social apps, and games your child uses. Include devices used away from home, such as a tablet at another household, and ask which accounts are signed in. A restriction only helps where it applies; a setting on one phone may not cover a different device, a separate account, or activity on the web.
Think about what you want each layer to do: limit unsuitable content, control app downloads and purchases, set useful time boundaries, or reduce unnecessary access to personal information. Choose rules suited to the child’s age and circumstances rather than treating one setting as a universal solution.
Set controls on the child’s account and device
Use the device maker’s family or parental-control tools as a starting point, then check the vendor’s current setup instructions. Menus, supported software versions, and eligibility requirements can change.

iPhone and iPad: Screen Time and Family Sharing
Apple’s Screen Time includes controls for a child’s iPhone or iPad, including Content & Privacy Restrictions and Communication Safety. With Family Sharing, the organizer or a designated parent or guardian can manage a child’s controls in the family group. Follow Apple’s current instructions for setting up Screen Time for a child and using Communication Safety; the available options and steps can depend on the device’s software version.
Apple advises keeping devices in a Family Sharing group updated so parental controls work as intended. See Apple’s current guidance when checking requirements.

Android and ChromeOS: Google Family Link
For eligible child accounts and supported Android or ChromeOS devices, Google Family Link lets a parent supervise the account, manage apps and screen time, and adjust controls for Google services such as Chrome, Play, YouTube, and Search. Eligibility depends on account and device requirements; consult Google’s Family Link setup instructions before starting.
Google notes that some Family Link features do not apply to a child’s iOS device or web activity. Check Google’s explanation of what parents can manage and do not assume that supervision on one device covers every way the child uses the account.

Choose restrictions that match your household
Once the child account is connected, review the controls available on that device and select only the limits you need. Depending on the platform, useful categories may include:
- Content access: Set age-appropriate restrictions for websites, searches, videos, and other content where those controls are offered.
- Apps and purchases: Require approval for app downloads or purchases if that fits your family’s approach.
- Communication: Review safeguards for messages or other communication features, including Apple Communication Safety where available.
- Time: Set screen-time boundaries or app limits when they support the child’s routine.
Tell your child what you are limiting and why. Make clear how they can ask for an exception, report a setting that blocks something they need, or get help after encountering disturbing material.

Check controls inside each app, game, and service
Device-level settings are not a substitute for reviewing the services your child actually uses. Open each important app, game, video service, browser, and account and look for its own family, privacy, content, or communication controls. Do not assume that a phone setting governs every recommendation, message, search, or activity on another device.
Google states that Family Link filters are imperfect and do not block all inappropriate content. Its coverage also has limits across iOS devices and web activity, so treat it as one layer rather than a complete filter. Read Google’s Family Link FAQ for its stated limitations.

Controls differ among services and can change. Review current settings and instructions from each service instead of relying on an old menu guide or assuming a control exists everywhere.
Review privacy permissions as well as content filters
Content restrictions do not address every online risk. Check whether the child’s apps have access to personal information or device features they do not need. UNICEF specifically highlights location, photos, camera, and microphone permissions. Its online safety guidance for parents also encourages supporting children’s responsible online learning.
Make the controls part of an ongoing family routine
Parental controls need occasional review because the child’s needs and online activities change. Revisit them after a software update, when a new device or account is added, when the child’s circumstances change, or after an incident. Check that app-level rules still match the family’s expectations and that the child can tell you when something upsetting or confusing appears.
Pair settings with a calm conversation: agree on what the child should do if they see upsetting content, how to leave or report it, and which trusted adult they can tell. Technical restrictions can help, but they work best as part of an age-appropriate plan that includes communication and support.
