To set up parental controls on Xbox, give your child a separate Microsoft account, add it to your Microsoft family group, then configure content, screen time, online communication and purchase settings through the Xbox Family Settings app or Microsoft Family. The controls are separate, so you can choose the restrictions that fit your child rather than applying one all-or-nothing setting.

Before you start: use a child account

Xbox recommends that a child use their own account rather than an adult’s account. Add that account to your Microsoft family group; Xbox describes the family group as a free service that provides access to family features. A parent or organizer in the group can then manage the child’s Xbox privacy and online settings. See Xbox family settings.

You can manage Xbox-specific family controls in the Xbox Family Settings app or on the Microsoft family website at account.microsoft.com/family. Microsoft also documents time controls through the Microsoft Family Safety app and family website. The exact labels and placement may vary by app version, operating system or locale, so use the current controls presented on your device.

Set up the controls you need

1. Restrict games and other content

Choose an age-appropriate content limit for the child’s account, then review individual games or approvals where those options are available. Content maturity and permission to play a particular title are distinct decisions: an age filter sets a general boundary, while a title-specific review can address an individual game. Xbox describes mature-content filtering in its family controls. ESRB also explains rating-based controls, but its console menu instructions may reflect an older interface; do not assume those menu labels match your current Xbox.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Set Xbox screen-time schedules

Use the family controls to set the times your child may use the Xbox and a daily time allowance. Allowed windows can differ by day. Microsoft says these schedules apply to devices connected to the family group, and Xbox screen time is counted while the child is signed in—even if the console is idle. Have the child sign out when finished. See Microsoft’s instructions for setting screen-time limits across devices.

3. Limit a particular game or app

If a general Xbox schedule is not specific enough, Microsoft Family Safety can set a daily allowance and permitted time windows for an individual app or game. Those limits can vary by day. Follow Microsoft’s app and game limit instructions in the Family Safety app or on the family website.

4. Review communication, multiplayer and privacy

Choose the child’s permissions for online communication, multiplayer, friend requests and other social interactions. Xbox’s family controls also let parents review a child’s friend list and communications. These settings govern contact and online play, not game maturity or time allowance, so review them separately in the Xbox family settings.

5. Require approval for purchases

Turn on purchase approval, often presented as “Ask a Parent,” if you want to review purchases made by the child account. Xbox also describes adding funds to an account as an option for managing spending. Approval and account funds address spending; neither replaces content restrictions. See Xbox’s family controls overview.

6. Check activity and adjust settings

Xbox provides activity reporting so parents can review a child’s activity and revisit settings as needed. Reports may not match enforced screen time exactly: Microsoft notes that signed-in idle time can count toward a limit without appearing the same way in usage reports. Consult Microsoft’s Family Safety troubleshooting guidance when the report and limit seem inconsistent.

If a restriction or time report seems wrong

  • Time runs out sooner than expected: Check whether the child’s profile remained signed in while idle. Signed-in time counts; sign the child out when their session ends. If another person plays while that profile is still signed in, the child’s allowance may be used.
  • The report shows less use than the limit enforcement: Idle signed-in time may count toward the limit but not appear equivalently in the activity report. Microsoft explains this distinction in its Family Safety troubleshooting article.
  • A game is restricted when several people are signed in: Microsoft says the youngest child’s age restriction may apply to games when multiple users are signed in. A parent can bypass the restriction, or the younger account can sign out.
  • A screen-time schedule does not seem to apply: Confirm that the Xbox is connected to the child’s family group; Microsoft says schedules apply to connected devices.
