To set up ChatGPT parental controls, link your account with your teen’s: on the web, open your profile menu and go to Settings > Parental controls > Add family member. Invite them by phone or email; they must accept before you can manage settings. Linking lets you adjust certain safeguards and schedules, but it does not let you read your teen’s chats or monitor their activity in real time.
Link your account with your teen’s
Either the parent or teen can start the invitation. For the parent flow on ChatGPT’s web version:
- Open ChatGPT and select your profile menu.
- Choose Settings, then Parental controls.
- Select Add family member.
- Under Invite family member, choose Use phone or Use email.
- Enter your teen’s phone number or email address and select Send.
- Have your teen open the invitation link from the text or email and accept it. They may also receive an in-app notification.
After the invitation is accepted, return to Settings > Parental controls and select your teen under Family members to review or change settings. The invitation and interface details are described in OpenAI’s Managing parental controls in ChatGPT.
If your teen sends the invitation
Your teen can go to Settings > Parental controls > Invite a parent, choose phone or email, enter your contact information, and send the invitation. Accept it to link accounts. If you already sent an invitation, they can accept it under Settings > Parental controls > Accept invite. Once linked, they can see which managed settings are on or off, but cannot change those settings themselves.

One parent or guardian can link with multiple teens, but a teen can be linked to only one parent or guardian at a time. Either person can unlink the accounts.
Choose what your teen can use
In Settings > Parental controls, select your teen under Family members to review available controls. OpenAI notes that availability can vary by region or feature. These settings manage particular features and preferences; they do not give a parent access to the teen’s account as a whole.

These defaults are the ones listed in OpenAI’s parental-controls guide; settings may vary by region or feature. Turning off most controls hides or blocks the related feature. Turning one on makes it available while other safety protections continue to apply. Some changes may take time to apply, and some affect only new conversations, so existing chats may retain their previous settings.
Understand the difference between Study hours and Quiet hours
Study hours do not block ChatGPT. They make eligible new conversations in the main ChatGPT experience start in Study mode. Study mode and Study hours do not apply to conversations with GPTs or in Projects, and Study hours do not prevent a teen from using ChatGPT outside the scheduled period.

Quiet hours restrict access. During scheduled quiet hours, a teen cannot use ChatGPT, including ChatGPT Work. Choose this setting if the goal is to make ChatGPT unavailable at certain times rather than encourage a particular conversation style.
Keep ChatGPT Work controls in scope
Codex network access and Cloud browser govern different ChatGPT Work capabilities. Turning off Codex network access blocks code run by ChatGPT Work from connecting to online services; it does not control Search, plugins, connectors, or the Cloud browser. Turning off Cloud browser blocks ChatGPT Work’s built-in browser.

Ask ChatGPT to help change supported settings
For some supported controls, a parent can ask ChatGPT to review or update a linked teen’s setting, then approve or deny the requested change. Invitations, account linking, and some settings still need to be handled in Settings > Parental controls.

Linking accounts does not let a parent or guardian access a teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity. It is a way to manage selected controls, not a chat-monitoring feature.

Safety notifications are enabled by default when accounts are linked. OpenAI may notify a parent in limited situations involving a serious concern. A notification may give a brief description of the concern, an account action when relevant, and support resources; it does not include chat transcripts or history. Depending on contact details and preferences, notifications may arrive by email, SMS, or push. See OpenAI’s parental-controls FAQ.
If you receive a safety notification, OpenAI advises checking in with your teen, listening without judgment, and helping them contact a trusted person, qualified professional, or crisis helpline. If there is an immediate threat, contact local emergency services.
Check age eligibility and what happens at 18
OpenAI says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13 and requires parental consent for users ages 13 to 18. ChatGPT for Teens is available to eligible teen accounts on Free and paid personal ChatGPT plans. OpenAI may enable the teen experience automatically based on age information provided by the account holder, verified age, or age prediction. A user can review their age category at Settings > Account; a Verify age option is not available on every account. If ChatGPT identifies an account holder as 18 or older and moves the account out of the teen experience, the teen and linked parent or guardian are notified. Teen protections are turned off by default, the parental-controls link ends, schedules stop managing the account, and the former parent can no longer manage settings or receive teen safety notifications. Other account settings do not change automatically.
The account holder can choose to set up parental controls again, but a new invitation must be accepted. If the account was moved out of the teen experience too soon, the account holder can review Settings > Account > Age and use Verify age, if available. A parent cannot verify age on the teen’s behalf, and simply reviewing the age category does not restore teen protections. OpenAI explains this transition in What changes when a ChatGPT user turns 18.
