For same-console play, open Play Locally, choose a sport, and follow the controller prompts. For online play, choose Play Globally or Play with Friends; you’ll need internet access, a Nintendo Account, and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The game requires detached Joy-Con controllers and does not support Handheld Mode or Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers.

Choose the play setup that fits your group

Play route Consoles and connection What to select Requirements
Local, same console One console; players share it Play Locally Compatible Joy-Con configuration for the chosen sport; detached controllers; TV or tabletop mode
Online matchmaking Internet play Play Globally Internet access, Nintendo Account, and active Nintendo Switch Online membership
Online with friends Internet play with friends Play with Friends Internet access, Nintendo Account, and active Nintendo Switch Online membership
Wired LAN Up to four consoles connected to the same wired router Open the LAN Play menu from Play with Friends Each setup needs a game, dock, Ethernet cable, and TV; a LAN adapter is needed if the dock has no Ethernet port

The compatible controllers and player count depend on the sport and selected configuration. Nintendo’s official FAQ lists paired or single Joy-Con configurations, and Joy-Con plus Leg Strap for some Soccer play.

Set up local play on one console

  1. Start Nintendo Switch Sports and select Play Locally.
  2. Choose a sport, then follow the on-screen controller instructions. Check the prompts for that sport before handing out controllers; configurations vary.
  3. Place the console in TV or tabletop mode and detach the controllers. Handheld Mode is not supported; Nintendo recommends TV Mode for the best play experience.
  4. Make sure everyone has clear space to move, attach the wrist straps, and check that the play area is free of people and objects.

Extra compatible Joy-Con controllers may be needed depending on the sport, the number of players, and the controllers already available. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible.

Set up online play

  1. Connect the console to the internet and make sure the player has a Nintendo Account.
  2. Start the game and choose Play Globally to play online with other players, or Play with Friends to play with friends.
  3. Use an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says that without one, Play Globally offers only a trial competition against computer competitors.

Nintendo states that an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online. If you have just activated a membership and the game does not recognize it, close the game and try again after a short time.

Voice chat and GameChat

Voice chat in Play with Friends uses the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app and requires membership. Nintendo Accounts belonging to children under 13 cannot use that voice-chat feature. On Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo says the game can be played while chatting with friends through GameChat. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ and official game site for details.

Use the Leg Strap for supported Soccer play

The Leg Strap is optional and is needed only for some Soccer gameplay configurations. Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap.

Set up wired LAN play across multiple consoles

Wired LAN is a separate option for connecting multiple consoles through the same wired router. Nintendo supports up to four consoles and up to eight players total, with two players per console; the number who can play at once depends on the sport. Nintendo’s LAN Play guide lists a game, dock, Ethernet cable, and television for each console. If a dock does not have a LAN port, use a LAN adapter. Nintendo also describes a compatible licensed accessory for connecting a USB LAN adapter to Switch Lite.

  • Online play is limited to a trial: Check that the player has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, internet access, and a Nintendo Account.
  • A newly activated membership isn’t recognized: Close the game and try again after a short time.
