Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo add a Matter device to SmartThings, put the device in pairing mode, open the SmartThings app, tap Add (+) then Add Device, scan the device’s Matter QR code (or type its setup code), choose a hub and room, select a network if asked, and save. Before you start, check that you have a supported controller. If the device uses Thread, the controller must also act as a Thread Border Router. This guide covers both and explains what to do when pairing fails.
What you need before pairing
All requirements below come from SmartThings Support’s SmartThings x Matter Integration article, published January 19, 2023. The version thresholds are the ones stated there. Check the current app listing and your hub’s documentation, because requirements can change.
The phone is the commissioner; the hub is the controller
Two roles are involved. The phone running the SmartThings app is the Matter commissioner: it brings the device onto your network during onboarding. A Matter controller then controls the device afterward. In most Samsung homes, that controller is a SmartThings hub.
Supported controllers and software
| Item | Requirement stated by SmartThings |
|---|---|
| Controller examples | SmartThings 2018 Hub (IM6001-V3P01) and Aeotec Smart Home Hub, on firmware 45.9 or higher |
| SmartThings 2015 Hub | Supports Matter devices that use Wi-Fi/LAN, but has no Thread router, so Thread devices need a third-party border router |
| Android phone | SmartThings app 1.7.91 or higher |
| iPhone | iOS 16.2 or higher and SmartThings app 1.6.94 or higher |
Is your device a Matter device?
Look for the Matter badge and a Matter QR code on the device or its packaging. SmartThings says the QR code contains an 11- or 21-digit setup code, which you can type in if scanning fails. Some devices sold before Matter existed may gain support through a firmware update, but SmartThings says this depends on the device.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Wi-Fi/LAN or Thread?
Not every Matter device needs Thread. Devices that use Wi-Fi/LAN need only a compatible controller on your network. Devices built on Thread need a controller with Thread Border Router capability. Check the device’s box or manual to see which one it uses.
Add a Matter device step by step
- Enter pairing mode. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, since the method varies by device. A device in pairing mode may trigger a SmartThings notification that starts onboarding for you.
- Open SmartThings and tap Add (+), then Add Device.
- Scan the QR code. Point the camera at the Matter QR code. If you can’t scan it, use the option to enter the setup code manually. SmartThings also describes a path where you select the brand and device before scanning.
- Select a hub and a room.
- Wait for the connection. If the app prompts you, choose the Wi-Fi or Thread network.
- Name the device and save.
Keep the printed or displayed setup code within reach. Screens may differ slightly between devices, so defer to the manufacturer’s instructions where they differ.

Thread devices with a SmartThings 2015 Hub
The 2015 hub can’t act as a Thread Border Router. You can still use Thread devices by adding a third-party Thread Border Router. SmartThings says the border router and the hub must be on the same Wi-Fi/LAN. During onboarding, select the Thread network and enter its 32-character Thread Network Key. That key may be on the border router itself or in the app you used to set it up. How you set up the border router depends on its manufacturer.

Onboarding fails
- Confirm you have a supported Matter controller.
- Make sure the QR code is fully visible, or use the setup code instead.
- Check that the device is still in pairing mode and within range of both your phone and the controller.
- Reset the device per the manufacturer’s instructions, then restart the SmartThings app.
The hub or network option is missing
Verify that the controller is online. If the signal is weak, move the network equipment closer to the device.
You see an incompatible-network warning
Check whether the device supports the Wi-Fi frequency (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) and the security type of the network you selected. Restarting the device and the controller is also worth trying.

A connected device goes offline
- Check range and obstructions.
- Power cycle the device and the controller, and restart SmartThings.
- Check the device’s power or battery.
- If nothing works, remove the device and add it again.
Share a device with another ecosystem (multi-admin)
A Matter device connected to SmartThings can also be shared with another supported service and stay connected in SmartThings. Install and configure the other service’s app first, then:
- Open the device in SmartThings and go to its More menu.
- Choose Share with other services, then Share device.
- SmartThings generates a QR code and setup code. Use these in the other service’s app.
These generated codes are different from the physical code on the device, so don’t mix them up. A Matter device can connect to five services. If it’s already at that limit, remove one service before sharing again.
