Start with one diffused key light placed slightly above eye level and off to one side of the camera. Add fill only if the shadow side is too dark; add a backlight only when it helps separate the subject from the background. Check each change on the actual camera, because the right arrangement depends on your room, subject, camera, and intended look.
What each light does
- Key light: The main light on your subject. Its direction and softness shape the face and set the overall look.
- Fill light: Light on the shadow side that reduces contrast. A reflector or white surface can bounce the key light back onto the subject instead of adding another powered light.
- Backlight: Light from behind the subject that can help distinguish them from the background. Aim or flag it so its beam does not shine directly into the lens and cause flare.
These roles are useful for interviews and video calls, but three lights are not a requirement. Cisco’s 2021 meeting-room lighting guide describes the key, fill, and backlight roles; John Jackman’s three-point interview-lighting illustration shows the same basic arrangement.
How to set up lighting for video
- Frame the shot. Put the subject where they will appear in the finished frame, then look at the camera image rather than judging the light only by eye.
- Control existing room light. Turn off or block sources that create unwanted shadows or visibly different color casts. If you keep them, try to match the video light to the room’s color.
- Position the key. Place a diffused light slightly above eye level and off to one side of the camera. For an interview, Ikan suggests starting around 45 degrees from the camera axis; adjust from there to suit the subject and shot. See Ikan’s interview-lighting guide.
- Adjust the camera image. Change the light’s distance or brightness until the subject is exposed as desired. Set and keep camera white balance consistent while you evaluate the shot.
- Add fill if needed. If the shadow side is too dark, add a fill light on the opposite side or bounce the key from a reflector or pale surface. Keep some shadow if you want the face to retain shape and contrast.
- Add a backlight only if it helps. Position it behind the subject for separation, then check that it does not shine into the lens or spill distractingly onto the background.
- Review the final frame. Check for harsh facial shadows, glare, reflections, background spill, color casts, and flicker. Make adjustments while watching the actual camera image.
MACCAM’s lighting guide also discusses softening light and controlling shadows. There is no single exposure value or color-temperature setting established as right for every camera and room.
How to soften or control shadows
A large or diffused source generally produces softer-looking shadows than a small, direct source. Diffusion can soften the key; fill or bounce can lift the shadow side. Use these controls to achieve the contrast you want, not to eliminate every shadow by default.

- If the face looks harsh, try diffusion or move the light farther away and adjust its brightness for the camera image.
- If the shadow side loses too much detail, add restrained fill or bounce light from a pale surface.
- If the image looks flat, reduce fill so the key can create more shape.
How to avoid distracting mixed color
Different room sources can make parts of the image look like different colors. Where practical, switch off or control sources that conflict with your key light, or choose a light that can match the environment. Set the camera’s white balance for the lighting you keep and avoid changing it mid-shot.
Do not assume one color temperature is correct for every room. Check faces and neutral-looking surfaces in the camera image for unwanted color casts, and adjust the light or room sources together.

What to compare when choosing a video light
A single diffused, controllable LED video light is a practical starting point for a one-person setup. A reflector or white bounce surface can provide fill without another powered lamp. For more complex interview lighting, additional lights, diffusion, and stands can give you more placement and control options.

| Flicker behavior | Check performance at the frame rate and dimming level you plan to use. Cisco’s 2021 meeting-room guide recommends “a lighting system with minimal flicker” for camera capture; that is guidance for its meeting-room context, not a universal pass/fail standard. |
| Color rendering | CRI can be one comparison point, but a single CRI figure does not fully describe how a light will render color on camera. Cisco recommends CRI 85 or better in its meeting-room guide, not as a universal video-production threshold. |
For one product example, Elgato states that Key Light Air MK.2 and Key Light Neo have CRI above 94 and adjustable color temperature from 2900–7000 K. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results; see Elgato’s CRI explainer.
