To use Google Wallet for in-store tap to pay on a Samsung phone, install or open Wallet, turn on NFC, make Google Wallet the default contactless payment app, add an eligible payment card, and set a screen lock. Then unlock your phone and hold it near a contactless payment terminal. Exact Settings labels vary by Samsung model and software version, so use Settings search for “NFC” if a path below does not match.
Before you start
Google says you need a valid Google Account, Android 9 or later, and current versions of Google Play Services and Google Wallet. Wallet does not work on rooted devices and does not support work profiles; if your phone has a personal profile, use that profile for Wallet. A Samsung phone’s brand alone does not guarantee compatibility: NFC support, software, and the device’s security status also matter. Google’s Wallet app requirements
- A payment card must be supported by both its issuer and your country. A physical card’s contactless symbol does not by itself mean it can be added to Wallet.
- Your phone needs NFC and a supported screen lock to make secure payments.
- The device must meet Google’s security requirements for tap to pay.
Set up Google Wallet on your Samsung phone
- Install or open Google Wallet. Download it from Google Play, open the app, and follow the setup prompts. Sign in with a valid Google Account. Google Wallet app requirements
- Enable NFC. Open Settings and search for “NFC.” Turn NFC on. On some Samsung phones, the setting is under Connections; the exact menu can vary. Google’s tap-to-pay setup guidance
- Choose Wallet as the default payment app. In Settings, search “NFC,” open NFC and Contactless payments, tap Payment default, select Google Wallet, and confirm. If your phone uses different labels, look for its NFC or contactless payment settings. Google’s device setup instructions
- Add a payment card. In Wallet, tap Add to Wallet, choose Payment card, and follow the instructions. Your bank may require you to accept terms or verify the card before it is ready. Check that the issuer supports Google Wallet for the exact card and country. Google’s supported payment methods guidance
- Set a screen lock. Use a supported PIN, pattern, password, or biometric method. Google requires a screen lock for secure payments; some smart-unlock methods are not accepted for verification. Google’s tap-to-pay guidance
- Check device security if setup or payment is blocked. Google recommends checking Play Protect certification. Rooting, an unlocked bootloader, a custom ROM, developer software, or other modified or uncertified software can make tap to pay unavailable. Google’s tap-to-pay troubleshooting steps
Pay in a store
Unlock your phone and hold it near the contactless reader. You do not need to open the Google Wallet app first. Follow any on-screen prompt to verify the purchase. Google says contactless phone payments require a payment method supported in a supported country. Google: Tap to pay with your phone

NFC is off or unavailable
Search Settings for “NFC” and switch it on. If your phone has no NFC setting, it may not support NFC, which is required for phone tap to pay. Google’s troubleshooting guide

A different app opens when you tap
Return to Settings, search for NFC, open NFC and Contactless payments, then set Payment default to Google Wallet. Menu wording can differ between Samsung models and software versions. Google’s troubleshooting guide
Your card is not ready or cannot be added
Complete any setup or bank verification prompt in Wallet. If the card still cannot be added, check with the issuer whether that exact card is eligible for Google Wallet in your country. Try another supported payment method if you have one. Google’s supported payment methods guidance

Wallet reports a security problem
Check Play Protect certification and whether the phone is rooted, modified, or running software Google does not approve for tap to pay. Device security status can prevent payment even when NFC is on. Google’s troubleshooting guide

Confirm that the phone is unlocked and Wallet is the default contactless payment app. The terminal must support contactless transactions on your card’s network; accepting that network by chip or swipe does not necessarily mean it accepts it contactlessly. Using Google Wallet for transit
Transit availability depends on the local transport system. Some systems accept a contactless bank card; others support a transit pass saved in Wallet. Check the transit operator’s own instructions to confirm which option works. Google’s transit payment guidance
For open-loop bank-card journeys where you tap in and out, use the same device and payment method for both taps. A phone and watch count as separate payment methods even when linked to the same card. Switching devices or cards can leave a journey incomplete and may result in a maximum fare under the operator’s rules. Google’s transit payment guidance
