To use Google Sheets without internet, turn on offline access while you’re online and save the spreadsheets you’ll need to your device. On a computer, setup requires Chrome or Edge and the Google Docs Offline extension; on Android and iPhone or iPad, use the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app. Your offline edits are stored on the device and sync to Drive after you reconnect.
Before you disconnect
- Connect to the internet and configure offline access before you lose connectivity.
- On a computer, use Chrome or Microsoft Edge, not a private or incognito window. Install and enable the Google Docs Offline extension, and make sure the device has enough free storage.
- On a phone or tablet, use the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
- Save the specific spreadsheets you need for offline use. Recent files may be saved automatically in some setups, but explicitly selecting important files is the safer approach.
Set up offline access on a computer
- In Chrome or Edge, sign in to the Google account you want to use and install and enable the Google Docs Offline extension. Edge may send you to the Chrome Web Store to get the extension.
- Open Google Drive, then select Settings > Settings.
- Turn on the Offline setting.
- Make the spreadsheet available offline. In Drive, open the file’s menu and choose Available offline. Alternatively, from the Docs home screen, select More > Available offline.
- Wait for the check mark indicating that the file is available. To verify a particular spreadsheet, open it while online and check the status icon near its title. If it is not ready, Google says an explanation appears there.
Google notes that offline access may already be on in some cases, including ChromeOS, a Chrome profile created with Docs and Drive sync selected, or a device with Drive for desktop installed. For account-specific setup details, see Google’s computer instructions for working offline.
Set up offline access on Android
In the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app, you can save recent files or choose a particular spreadsheet:
- Recent files: Tap Menu > Settings, then turn on Make recent files available offline.
- One spreadsheet: Tap More next to its filename and choose Make available offline.
- Find saved files: Tap Menu > Offline.

Set up offline access on iPhone or iPad
In the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app, choose whether to save recent files or a specific spreadsheet:
- Recent files: Tap Menu > Settings, then turn on Make recent files available offline.
- One spreadsheet: Tap More beside its filename and choose Make available offline.
- Find saved files: Tap Menu > Offline.

Edit offline and sync when you reconnect
Google says that without an internet connection you can still create, view, and edit files in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Offline changes are saved on your device and saved to Drive after the device reconnects. Troubleshoot offline access or syncing
- A computer file will not open offline: Confirm you are using Chrome or Edge in a regular browsing window, the Docs Offline extension is installed and enabled, and the file is marked available offline. Check the status icon near the document title.
- Offline setup or saving fails: Check that the device has enough free local storage. Open the file while online and make it available offline again.
- Changes are not syncing: Reconnect to a working network. Google recommends toggling the file’s offline setting off and on if syncing fails. If the file is too large to sync offline, make it smaller or copy smaller sections into new files.
- Offline access is disabled by an administrator: If this is a managed account and a message says offline sync is disabled, contact your organization’s administrator.
- Another account already has offline access in this browser profile: Google allows only one account per browser profile to have offline enabled. Use a separate browser profile for the other account.
