To track Google Ads conversions in WordPress, create a website conversion action in Google Ads, install the Google tag or configure Google Tag Manager, and make sure the conversion event fires only when the valuable action is completed. A confirmation-page view is often enough for a simple lead; purchases, button clicks, and dynamic values usually need event-based measurement. Then test the event in Tag Assistant and check its status in Google Ads.
Before you start: choose the action to count
A conversion is an action on your site that you have decided is valuable, such as a completed purchase, submitted lead form, or sign-up. Google Ads needs a website conversion action and a correctly implemented tag and event to measure it. Google describes its tag as tracking when someone who clicked an ad visits your site and completes an action you define as valuable (Google Ads Help: Add a Google tag to your website).

Choose the point in the visitor journey that represents completion. For a lead, count a successful submission or a confirmed lead—not merely a view of the form. For a purchase, plan to send the actual transaction value and currency; a transaction ID can help distinguish transactions. Confirm the event against your site’s real funnel before publishing the tag.
Choose the right tracking route
| Route | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| URL-based conversion | A distinct thank-you or confirmation page, or another simple page load. | Quick to set up, but not suited to complex event logic or dynamic transaction details. |
| Google tag with event code | Button clicks, dynamic purchase values, transaction IDs, or custom logic. | Offers more control but requires adding code and validating the event. |
| Google Tag Manager | Teams that want to manage tags and triggers centrally. | Flexible, but the container, triggers, tags, and conversion ID and label must be configured consistently. |
| Google Analytics import | Reusing eligible Analytics key events when the accounts are linked. | Requires correct linkage and permissions. Analytics-imported conversions are not supported for enhanced conversions. |
Google’s setup guidance says linked Analytics accounts or newly marked key events may take 24 to 48 hours to propagate before import options appear; this is guidance, not a service guarantee. See Google Ads Help: Set up your web conversions.

Create a website conversion action in Google Ads
-
In Google Ads, open Goals and go to the conversion summary to create a conversion action.
-
Choose the website data source and enter your domain in the setup flow. Google may detect an existing Google tag or a linked Google Analytics property and offer to reuse it; if it does not, follow the tag setup option.
-
Select the event type and decide whether a page load is enough or whether the action needs code-based measurement. Google’s setup guidance recommends URL-based setup for simple page loads and code for button clicks, dynamic purchase amounts, transaction IDs, or custom business logic.
-
Save the conversion action and note the tag instructions, including the conversion ID and label if shown. You will need the relevant details when implementing the event.

Install the tag on your WordPress site
Option 1: Google tag and event snippet
Google’s direct-tag instructions use a Google tag across the website and an event snippet for the conversion action. The tag belongs site-wide in the page head; the event snippet must run for the relevant conversion event or page. In WordPress, use a reliable site-wide code insertion method and a way to fire the event only after the intended action completes. Google’s instructions are platform-neutral and do not require a particular WordPress plugin. Follow Google’s Google tag instructions for the current code and placement details.
Option 2: Google Tag Manager
Google Tag Manager lets you deploy and update tags centrally rather than adding each tag directly to page code. Add or use the Tag Manager container on the WordPress site, configure the Google Ads conversion tag with the conversion details, and set a trigger that matches the completed action. Google documents a Conversion Linker tag configured to fire on all pages so ad-click information in landing URLs can be stored in first-party cookies. See How Google Ads tracks website conversions.
Do not add another copy of a tag before checking what is already on the site. Review existing plugin integrations, theme code, Google Analytics setup, and Tag Manager containers. Google warns that third-party CMS plugins can result in double tagging and duplicate conversion reporting (Google Ads conversion setup guidance).
Make the conversion event reflect a real completion
The tag’s trigger matters as much as its installation. For a thank-you page, use the confirmation URL only if visitors reach it after a successful submission. For a form that confirms completion without changing pages, use an event-based trigger tied to successful submission. For ecommerce, pass the actual purchase value and currency when the transaction completes, and use a transaction ID where appropriate. A trigger that fires on a button click before the site confirms success can count abandoned or failed actions.

With code or Tag Manager, check that the conversion event fires once per intended action, with the correct conversion ID and label where applicable. Ensure value and currency variables are populated at the moment the event fires. Google provides implementation details in its Google tag guide and conversion measurement guidance.

-
Visit the public WordPress site and complete a test journey that reaches the conversion action. Check that the intended page or event—not an earlier step—triggers measurement.
-
Use Tag Assistant to diagnose Google tag issues and verify that the expected tag fires. Google Ads identifies Tag Assistant as a troubleshooting tool in its tag guidance.

In Google Ads, open the conversion action’s status area and review its status. A successful page load or installed tag alone does not prove that the conversion event is firing correctly or being recorded.
-
If you use dynamic purchase details, confirm the event carries a valid value and currency. For a code-based action, also verify the conversion ID and label against the Google Ads action.
- No tag detected: Confirm the Google tag loads on the public site, then rescan or complete tag setup in Google Ads.
- Inactive or unverified status: Review the conversion trigger and Tag Assistant findings, then test the full completion path.
- Duplicate conversions: Look for multiple plugin or theme insertions, duplicate Tag Manager containers, or multiple triggers counting the same action.
- Form or button actions are missing: A URL-based setup may not fit an action that completes without a distinct page load. Use an event-based implementation with a trigger for successful completion.
- Purchase values are wrong: Use an implementation that passes the dynamic transaction value and currency, and inspect those variables at the event.
Enhanced conversions are optional
Enhanced conversions supplement existing tags with hashed first-party customer data, such as an email address, to help match conversions. Google describes SHA-256 hashing and matching against signed-in Google accounts. This is not a substitute for setting up the conversion action and its underlying event.
Use the feature only when relevant customer data is available at conversion time and your collection and use comply with Google’s customer data policies and Data Processing Terms. Google notes that setup can require code changes and developer knowledge; its documented selector-based route requires at least one relevant user-provided field on the conversion page. Follow the applicable instructions for enhanced conversions with the Google tag or enhanced conversions with Google Tag Manager.
