On a Chromebook with a built-in fingerprint reader, you can opt in to fingerprint unlock from Settings > Security and Privacy > Lock screen and sign-in. Confirm your Chromebook password, select Set up under Edit Fingerprints, then choose Add Fingerprint and scan a finger. A USB fingerprint reader cannot add this feature to a Chromebook that lacks built-in hardware.
Check whether your Chromebook can use fingerprint sign-in
Fingerprint unlock requires a fingerprint reader built into the Chromebook. Google says external fingerprint readers are not supported, so connecting a USB sensor will not enable the feature. Google’s general instructions do not include a model-by-model compatibility list. If you are unsure whether your Chromebook has a reader, check the device’s specifications or contact its manufacturer.
If the fingerprint option is missing—especially on a managed Chromebook—ask your device administrator or manufacturer for help. Google’s instructions do not establish a specific reason the setting might be unavailable. Google’s Chromebook fingerprint setup guide covers eligibility and enrollment.
Enroll a fingerprint
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen, then open Settings.
- Under Security and Privacy, select Lock screen and sign-in.
- Enter your Chromebook password and confirm.
- Under Edit Fingerprints, select Set up, then Add Fingerprint.
- Touch the fingerprint sensor with the finger you want to save. Follow the on-screen prompts, changing the angle so the scan includes the sides of your finger. Google recommends scanning from different angles.
- When enrollment is confirmed, select Add Fingerprint to save another finger, or select Done.
Menu wording can vary by ChromeOS version or language. If the labels differ, look for the lock-screen and fingerprint controls in Settings.

Unlock, remove, or troubleshoot a saved fingerprint
Unlock the Chromebook
Place a registered finger on the sensor when prompted. If recognition fails, unlock with your Chromebook password. Make sure you are using a finger you enrolled, and that it is clean and dry; position it so the sides touch the sensor.
Delete a fingerprint
Open the screen-lock or fingerprint controls in Settings, authenticate with your Chromebook password, and select the delete option beside the saved finger. Google’s help page uses different navigation wording for deletion than for enrollment, so the exact label may vary.

If enrollment or recognition fails
- For recognition problems, try the same saved finger again with the sides touching the sensor; ensure the finger is clean and dry.
- If saving a fingerprint fails, try enrolling a different finger or restart the Chromebook.
- If the problem continues, submit feedback through ChromeOS.
These steps follow Google’s Chromebook fingerprint guidance.
Know when ChromeOS will require your password
Fingerprint unlock is an alternative for routine access, not a permanent replacement for your password. Google says ChromeOS requires the password after a restart, after a few unsuccessful fingerprint attempts, when switching to another user on the same Chromebook, and after a time limit: 48 hours on personal Chromebooks or 12 hours on managed Chromebooks. These are ChromeOS-specific intervals documented by Google, not general rules for other devices.

What fingerprint data is used for
Google says fingerprint data is stored on the Chromebook and is not shared with Google or apps on the device. Its security guidance says a Secure Biometrics Processor captures and recognizes the fingerprint, while templates are encrypted and use device-specific cryptographic protections. Apps receive only whether verification succeeded—not the fingerprint itself. These are descriptions of ChromeOS’s design, not a guarantee against every possible attack. Google also cautions that “A fingerprint may be less secure than a strong password or PIN.” Treat fingerprint unlock as a convenience and keep your password available. A website or app can offer fingerprint sign-in through WebAuthn only if it supports that flow and you have already enrolled a fingerprint on the Chromebook. The service does not receive your fingerprint data. This is separate from unlocking the Chromebook, and it is not available on every site or app. See Google’s guide to signing in to websites with a PIN or fingerprint.
