Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo set up production error tracking, instrument the application, send events to a monitoring backend, verify that they arrive with useful release and stack context, then configure sampling, privacy controls, and alert ownership. Installing an SDK is only the beginning: the setup is complete when your team can identify an issue, connect it to the deployed code, and take the right action.
Choose an instrumentation approach
Two common approaches are an error-monitoring vendor SDK or OpenTelemetry instrumentation connected to a telemetry backend. The right choice depends on your language and framework coverage, whether automatic instrumentation is sufficient, the backend and exporter you want, and the operational work your team can support. Compare issue grouping and source mapping, cross-service context, filtering and retention controls, sampling, alert integrations, and cost at your expected event volume. The sources cited here do not establish a neutral provider ranking or current prices.
| Approach | What it provides | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor error-monitoring SDK | A platform-specific SDK and monitoring workflow. Sentry provides initialization examples for supported platforms and recommends configuring its SDK early. Sentry error monitoring | Confirm the current guide for your platform and SDK version, plus available source mapping, integrations, filtering, retention, and alert controls. |
| OpenTelemetry instrumentation | Instrumentation and export of telemetry to a compatible backend. For Node.js, OpenTelemetry documents zero-code instrumentation using its API and automatic instrumentation packages. OpenTelemetry JavaScript zero-code instrumentation | Check supported instrumentations for your actual libraries and framework; automatic coverage may not include every component. Select and operate an exporter and backend. |
These are not mutually exclusive in every architecture, but avoid collecting duplicate events unless you have a clear reason and know how they will be used.
Set up instrumentation and export
For Node.js with OpenTelemetry zero-code instrumentation
The OpenTelemetry guide describes installing @opentelemetry/api and @opentelemetry/auto-instrumentations-node, then loading the registration module as the application starts. Its example configures OTLP export and sets OTEL_SERVICE_NAME so the backend can identify the service. Resource detectors can be selected with OTEL_NODE_RESOURCE_DETECTORS. Follow the guide for the current package and startup syntax rather than copying an example without checking it against your runtime and deployment model.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Load instrumentation early enough in process startup to observe the libraries you need. Confirm that the configured OTLP endpoint is reachable from the deployed application and that the backend accepts the service identity and telemetry format. The guide is at opentelemetry.io/docs/zero-code/js/.
With a vendor SDK
Initialize the vendor SDK as early as the platform guide recommends so it can capture relevant startup and runtime errors. Use the current platform-specific instructions: SDK names, configuration options, and supported framework versions vary. Sentry’s product page links platform examples at sentry.io/product/error-monitoring/.

Verify that events arrive with useful context
- Send a known test event. In a safe environment, trigger a controlled exception or test event using the SDK or instrumentation path you intend to deploy.
- Check the destination. Confirm the event appears in the intended backend project and environment, and that it is associated with the correct service.
- Check the stack and source context. The error should be readable and traceable to the code that ran. Sentry’s quick reference recommends uploading source maps or platform debug files such as ProGuard, dSYM, or PDB files to make stack traces useful. Sentry Developer Quick Reference Guide
- Check deployment identity. Attach the release or code-version context supported by your chosen tool so you can investigate which deployed version produced the event. Exact field names and capabilities differ by product.
- Check investigation details. Review available tags, breadcrumbs, and surrounding trace or request context. Ensure the data helps explain what happened without collecting unnecessary sensitive information.
If the test event does not appear, check startup loading, endpoint and credentials, network access, environment or project selection, and backend ingestion configuration before treating the setup as complete.
Make error data actionable
An event is useful when it helps someone decide what to do. Establish a triage path for recurring issues: who owns the affected service, how an issue is assigned, and how a regression is connected to a deployment. Sentry’s guide describes issue grouping and assignment, plus integrations with collaboration, issue-tracking, and escalation tools; other backends may implement these capabilities differently. Use service identity, environment, release, and appropriate tags to make filtering practical. Configure alerts around meaningful service impact and baseline behavior, not thresholds copied from an unrelated application. Each alert should have a clear owner, an action to take, and a time window suited to the failure mode. Sentry describes issue and metric alerts, but does not prescribe universal thresholds.
Tune sampling for volume and the questions you need to answer
Sampling can reduce telemetry volume and overhead, but it can also discard evidence. OpenTelemetry’s sampling documentation, last modified October 16, 2025, describes 1,000 or more traces per second as one circumstance in which a team may consider sampling. It also notes that sampling rates of 1% or lower occur in some high-volume systems. These are contextual guidance points, not universal thresholds or recommended defaults. OpenTelemetry sampling

| Sampling method | How it decides | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Head sampling | Decides early, before the full trace is available. | Simple and efficient, but cannot select based on an error or slow operation discovered later in the trace. Head sampling alone cannot guarantee retention of every error trace. |
| Tail sampling | Decides after considering most or all spans in a trace. | Can retain traces based on conditions such as errors or high latency, but is more resource-intensive and operationally complex. Monitor the sampler and account for the possibility that it cannot keep up and useful data is lost. |
Choose a policy based on what you need to diagnose and the load you can sustain. OpenTelemetry’s tracing SDK specification describes sampling behavior and configuration concepts: OpenTelemetry tracing SDK.

For the OpenTelemetry JavaScript zero-code module, the guide recommends OTEL_LOG_LEVEL=info in production. Before broad rollout, review the actual exception text, request data, user identifiers, and custom context your application may send. Apply filtering and retention settings in the selected backend according to your security, privacy, and jurisdictional requirements. There is no single redaction list or retention period that fits every application; verify the current controls and obligations for your tools and deployment region.
Quick Recap
Roll out and maintain the setup
- Start with a test or limited deployment and confirm ingestion under real startup and request paths.
- Check that service, environment, and release context remains correct after deployments and configuration changes.
- Review event volume, instrumentation logs, and application overhead as traffic changes.
- Exercise the alert path so the assigned team can receive and act on a meaningful test alert.
- Revisit sampling and data collection when the workload, debugging needs, or privacy requirements change.
