For an Atmos soundbar or AV receiver, connect Apple TV 4K to the audio device first, then connect that device to your TV. Next, confirm Dolby Atmos is enabled, and check that the specific show or movie offers Atmos. The right connection depends on your equipment: Apple says its high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ordinary ARC, and many TVs do not pass Atmos through to audio systems.
Check that your equipment and content support Atmos
Dolby Atmos playback requires a compatible Apple TV 4K setup and a program available in Atmos. Apple lists these supported audio arrangements:
- One or two HomePod speakers.
- A Dolby Atmos-compatible TV.
- An Atmos-compatible soundbar used with an Atmos-capable TV.
- An Atmos-enabled AV receiver.
Support at one point in the chain does not guarantee support throughout it. Check the Apple TV, audio device, TV, connection path, and the title’s audio options. Connect an Atmos soundbar or AV receiver
For the usual soundbar or receiver setup, route the Apple TV’s HDMI signal through the audio device. Apple cautions that most televisions do not pass Dolby Atmos through to a soundbar or receiver, and that Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Dolby Atmos does not work over ordinary ARC connections. - Connect Apple TV 4K to an HDMI input on the Atmos-capable soundbar or AV receiver.
- Connect the audio device’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV.
- On the audio device, select the input connected to Apple TV. On the TV, select the input connected to the audio device.
Use an HDMI cable. For a 4K TV that supports HDR, Apple recommends a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. A cable recommendation does not by itself ensure Atmos; the connected devices and content must also support it. Apple TV 4K setup guidance
When the audio device cannot pass HDR10 or Dolby Vision
Some Atmos-capable soundbars and receivers cannot pass through HDR10 or Dolby Vision. Apple describes two possible priorities: connect Apple TV 4K directly to the audio device for Atmos, or connect Apple TV 4K directly to the TV for HDR or Dolby Vision. To get both Atmos and the desired video format through one chain, the TV, receiver, or soundbar involved must support Atmos and that video format. Confirm the capabilities of the exact devices before settling on a connection.

Enable Dolby Atmos and check Quick Start
- On Apple TV 4K, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format.
- Under Immersive Audio, check that Dolby Atmos is on.
- Check Quick Start at Settings > Apps > iTunes Films and TV Shows > Quick Start. Apple says Dolby Atmos will not play if Quick Start is turned off.
Menu wording may differ by software version or region. If Immersive Audio or Dolby Atmos is missing, Apple says the home entertainment setup may need to change. Apple’s setup and troubleshooting instructions
Set up HomePod as Apple TV home cinema audio
HomePod is an alternative to a soundbar or receiver. Apple’s home cinema mode requires Apple TV 4K and HomePod speakers to have the latest software, and the Apple TV and HomePod (or stereo pair) must be assigned to the same room in the Home app.

- In the Home app, assign Apple TV and HomePod or the stereo pair to the same room.
- Choose Use as TV Speakers when prompted.
- If no prompt appears, on Apple TV open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output and select the HomePod or stereo pair.

Use eARC with a compatible TV and HomePod
Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) can use eARC to pass audio from a compatible TV—or another HDMI device connected to that TV—to Apple TV 4K and HomePod. This is a distinct HomePod setup; it is not the same as routing Apple TV audio through an ordinary ARC connection to a soundbar or receiver.

- Connect Apple TV 4K to the TV’s HDMI port labeled eARC.
- Enable HDMI-CEC and choose HomePod as the default audio output.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output > Audio Return Channel and turn on Play Television Audio.
- If required, enable eARC in the TV’s own settings.

Atmos is available only when the particular program offers it. Look for the Dolby Atmos icon in the title’s audio information. Apple says the steps for opening that information differ between Apple TV+ and other apps, so check the title details in the app you are using. A working Atmos-capable setup alone does not mean every program will play in Atmos. Apple’s instructions for checking content audio information

Troubleshoot when Dolby Atmos does not appear
- Atmos is missing from Audio Format: Recheck the entire device and connection chain; Apple notes that the setup may need to change if the Immersive Audio or Dolby Atmos option is absent.
- You connected through the TV: Many TVs do not pass Atmos to a soundbar or receiver. Try connecting Apple TV 4K directly to the audio device, if it supports the required video formats.
- The chain uses ARC: Apple says Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ordinary ARC. Do not confuse that limitation with the specific eARC-to-HomePod arrangement described above.
- Atmos works for some titles but not others: Check whether the specific program has a Dolby Atmos indicator in its audio information.
- HomePod does not appear as TV speakers: Confirm Apple TV and HomePod are on the latest software, in the same Home app room, and select the speaker under Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output.
- Audio plays but the desired HDR format does not: Check whether the soundbar or receiver can pass through HDR10 or Dolby Vision. If it cannot, the chosen connection may require a trade-off between Atmos and the desired video format.
