The best settings for a dark, spooky game start with your display and platform—not a universal brightness number. Confirm HDR support, enable the appropriate system HDR mode, calibrate the screen in the lighting where you play, and then adjust the game so near-black details remain visible without washing out the intended darkness. After that, inspect the game’s own accessibility menu for options such as subtitles, text size, motion reduction, and reduced flashing. The right combination depends on your screen, system, and the specific game.

What should I set up first?

Start with the conditions in which you actually play and the capabilities of the display you are using. A setting that is comfortable in a brightly lit room may not suit a dark room, and HDR controls do not behave identically across televisions, monitors, laptops, and external displays. Microsoft’s HDR guidance treats an HDR-capable display as a prerequisite for HDR calibration and recommends calibrating under normal viewing conditions.

  • Use your usual room lighting. Calibrating in one environment and playing in another can make it harder to judge whether dark objects are visible.
  • Confirm the selected screen supports HDR. If the display is not HDR-capable, HDR calibration instructions do not turn it into an HDR display.
  • Keep the goal in mind. Preserve useful detail near black while retaining the contrast and darkness the game intends. Raising brightness dramatically is not the only way to address lost shadow detail.
  • Change one layer at a time. System HDR, display calibration, an optional monitor shadow control, and an in-game brightness slider affect different parts of the picture. Adjusting them all at once makes it difficult to tell which change helped.

There is no evidence-based universal gamma, brightness, peak-nit, or frame-rate preset for all dark games. Microsoft notes that very low brightness and some HDR/SDR brightness choices can obscure dark detail, while laptop and external-display brightness controls may behave differently. Treat calibration patterns and in-game scenes as guides for your own display rather than as a reason to copy a number from another setup.

How do I set up HDR on Windows 11?

On a Windows 11 PC, turn HDR on for the HDR-capable display you intend to use, then run the Windows HDR Calibration app full-screen on that display. Microsoft says the app uses three patterns to help set the darkest visible detail, brightest visible detail, and maximum display brightness.

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > HDR. Select the HDR-capable display if more than one screen is connected, then turn HDR on for that display.
  2. Open Windows HDR Calibration. Run the app on the screen you will use for the game and follow its on-screen patterns. Microsoft describes the app as a way to improve color accuracy and consistency; its three patterns are calibration checks, not a gaming performance result.
  3. Run the patterns in your usual viewing conditions. Use the darkest and brightest pattern adjustments to set what is visible on your particular screen. The maximum-brightness pattern concerns the display, not a universal target that every game should use.
  4. Launch the game and inspect its own HDR or brightness options. System calibration and a game’s controls are separate. If the game offers calibration, use a representative dark scene and follow the game’s instructions rather than assuming the Windows adjustment replaces them.

These steps are specifically for Windows 11 and the Windows HDR Calibration app; they should not be treated as a generic calibration path for every PC configuration. NVIDIA warns that, in the configuration it describes, starting HDR content with Windows HDR off can result in incorrect, dim, or desaturated output. If HDR content looks unexpectedly dull, confirm the system HDR state before compensating with a large in-game brightness change.

Which HDR setting should I use on PS5?

On PS5, choose the HDR behavior that matches whether you want non-HDR content to remain SDR or be converted to HDR output. Then run the console’s HDR adjustment and, separately, check the game’s own brightness or HDR menu.

  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR.
  2. Select On When Supported if you want HDR output only when the content supports HDR. This is the straightforward choice when you want non-HDR content to stay in SDR.
  3. Select Always On if you want the PS5 to convert non-HDR content to HDR output as well. Conversion changes the output mode; it does not establish that every game will look better with it.
  4. Open Video Output > Adjust HDR and follow the console’s calibration prompts for your display.
  5. Open the game’s own display or brightness settings if it provides them. Console adjustment and a game-specific control are distinct steps.

PlayStation describes HDR as providing a greater contrast, color, and brightness range than SDR. That range is conditional on the display, platform configuration, and the content: selecting an HDR output option alone does not guarantee that a particular game has native HDR support or that a dark scene will be easier to read.

How do I make a dark scene clearer without washing out the blacks?

Use a representative dark scene to judge visibility after system and display calibration. Look for objects that should be discernible near black, while preserving deliberate shadows; if detail is crushed, avoid treating a large overall brightness increase as the first or only fix.

Microsoft’s HDR calibration includes a darkest-visible-detail pattern, and its troubleshooting guidance warns that dark detail can be obscured by brightness choices. Applying that principle to a game scene is a practical inference, not a measured setting for any particular title. Games differ in how they render darkness, and displays differ in how they show it, so there is no justified single slider value to recommend across them.

Check the game before changing extra display controls

If the game offers brightness, gamma, or HDR calibration, make a small adjustment and return to the same scene to assess it. A useful adjustment should reveal intended objects without flattening the scene into an evenly bright image. If the change makes blacks look gray or removes the visual separation between shadowed areas and lit objects, move back toward the prior setting.

Use a monitor shadow control cautiously

Some displays expose a separate dark-area adjustment. Samsung’s Canadian product listing for the Odyssey G5 G55H documents a Black Equalizer control for dark areas. That is an example of an available feature, not evidence that a particular setting is accurate, desirable, or suitable for every game. Treat it as optional and assess the actual image after each change; do not use it as a substitute for checking HDR support and calibration.

Troubleshoot in layers

  • The whole image looks dim or desaturated in HDR: on Windows 11, first confirm HDR is on for the selected display. NVIDIA’s warning about incorrect or dim output applies to the configuration it describes when HDR content starts with Windows HDR off.
  • Dark objects disappear but bright areas already look intense: revisit the display’s darkest-detail calibration and the game’s own adjustment rather than assuming overall brightness must go higher.
  • Changing a laptop or external monitor’s brightness has an unexpected effect: Microsoft notes that these displays do not all share the same brightness-control behavior. Use the controls available for the particular screen and judge the resulting picture rather than applying a value from another display.
  • The image changes when HDR is forced for non-HDR content: return to the platform’s supported-content behavior and compare the same scene. On PS5, Always On converts non-HDR content to HDR output, whereas On When Supported does not force that conversion.

Should I choose performance mode or quality mode?

Choose based on what the game supports and what matters more to you: smoother presentation or graphics quality and effects. There is no system-wide answer, and available modes can differ by title and hardware.

PlayStation describes Performance Mode as prioritizing smoother gameplay and Resolution Mode as prioritizing graphics quality; support varies by game. Remedy says Alan Wake 2 offers performance and quality choices on PS5 and Xbox Series X, but not a performance mode on Xbox Series S. If camera movement or frame pacing is uncomfortable, try a supported performance option first. If visual detail is the priority, compare the quality option in the same game and on the system you are using.

What the Alan Wake 2 PS5 Pro figures do—and do not—mean

In its 2024 PS5 Pro update, Remedy described Alan Wake 2 Quality mode as 30 fps with ray tracing and Performance mode as 60 fps. These are Remedy’s stated mode targets in that update, not independently measured results and not promises for other platforms, other games, or every play condition. They illustrate a specific title’s trade-off; they are not universal recommendations for spooky games.

Which accessibility settings should I check?

Look in the game’s own accessibility menu for controls that affect the particular barrier you want to address. Motion, flashing, subtitles, text size, color distinctions, and system-level interface settings are separate features, and a setting documented for one game does not mean another game offers it.

Motion and camera movement

Check for motion blur, camera shake or sway, and a persistent center dot or reticle. Santa Monica Studio documents these as separate options in God of War Ragnarök; this is an example of the controls a game may expose, not a claim about all horror games. Try the relevant control individually so you can keep other visual effects that are comfortable for you.

PS5 also documents a system-level Reduce Motion control. Its scope is console display movement; do not assume it universally switches off camera shake inside every game. If a game’s camera movement is the concern, inspect that title’s own menu.

Flashing and visual effects

Look for a game-specific warning and a reduced-flashing option. Santa Monica Studio documents Reduced Flashing in God of War Ragnarök, but availability is title-specific. HDR, color filters, or other display adjustments should not be presented as removing flashing or preventing a medical event; use a game’s explicit controls and its warnings.

Subtitles, captions, and navigation cues

Enable subtitles if needed, then inspect whether the game lets you adjust size or background, identify speakers, show captions for non-dialogue sounds, or add directional indicators. Santa Monica Studio documents these as distinct options in God of War Ragnarök, and PS5 game presets include subtitles in supported games. These settings are not necessarily bundled together, so check the game itself for each feature.

Console closed-caption settings have a different scope from a game’s subtitle menu. PS5 and Xbox document closed-caption controls for supported media; that does not mean captions will appear in every game. For dialogue or sound cues during gameplay, verify the specific title’s accessibility options.

Text, contrast, color, and zoom

Test text sizing, high contrast, color correction, zoom, or magnification against actual menus and gameplay. A setting can improve a console interface without changing the game’s own rendering. PS5 says Invert Colours disables HDR, so this option involves a trade-off if you use HDR. Xbox describes its system high-contrast option specifically for navigating built-in apps; check separately for an in-game high-contrast mode.

Physical controls

For players who also need more adaptable physical input, Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller supports Xbox consoles and Windows PC gaming and accepts remappable external inputs. It is a control-accessibility option, not a way to improve shadow visibility, so consider it separately from display adjustments.

How should I decide which settings matter most?

Make the choice in the order that limits unnecessary changes: display capability first, system output second, calibration third, then game-specific picture and accessibility options. This avoids trying to compensate in a game for a mismatch in the display or system setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the actual problem. Decide whether the issue is lost shadow detail, an HDR image that looks wrong, uncomfortable motion, flashing, unreadable text, unclear dialogue, or difficult controls. Different problems call for different settings.
  2. Match the setting to its scope. Use a display or platform setting for display/output behavior; use the game’s own menu for its camera, subtitles, flashing, and in-game contrast options.
  3. Compare one change at a time. Revisit the same scene or menu after adjusting a control. This is a practical way to see whether that specific change addresses your need; it is not a promise that every setting will be available or effective in every title.
  4. Keep the trade-off that works for you. A performance option may favor smoothness, while a quality option may prioritize graphics. Accessibility controls may also change the presentation. The preferred choice is the one that makes the game usable and comfortable on your setup.

Use these comparison axes when choosing between options: whether the game supports native HDR; whether near-black details remain visible; whether smoothness or graphical effects matter more to you; whether a control is in-game or system-level; and whether the specific accessibility option you need exists in that title. Those questions are more useful than copying another player’s brightness, gamma, or frame-rate preset.

How should I interpret game-specific examples?

Official support pages and publisher FAQs can establish that a feature or mode is offered, but they do not establish the best setting for every player or every display. The examples above show why settings need to be checked at the correct level: Windows HDR calibration belongs to a documented Windows 11 workflow, PS5 output choices apply at the console level, and game controls depend on the individual title.

For Alan Wake 2, Remedy’s FAQ confirms HDR, FSR2, and DLSS, along with different console quality/performance choices. Its 2024 PS5 Pro mode figures are tied to that update and platform. Do not transfer those figures to the Xbox versions, PC, or another game. Similarly, the God of War Ragnarök accessibility controls are examples of options a developer may provide, not a feature checklist guaranteed in a horror title.

Platform support pages can also be region-specific. The PS5 accessibility details cited here come from a Singapore-region support page, while game presets come from an Australia-region page; menu availability can vary by region and software build. Before relying on a particular label, check the current menu on your own console and the game version you have installed.

How we chose these recommendations

The recommendations prioritize an order that matches the documented scope of the controls: display capability and viewing conditions, platform HDR output and calibration, then game-specific brightness and accessibility. They distinguish official feature documentation from conclusions that are reasonable setup guidance, and they avoid prescribing universal values where the available evidence does not establish one. No universal brightness, gamma, peak-nit, or frame-rate preset is supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can PS5 or Xbox closed captions show every game’s dialogue?

No. The documented system closed-caption controls cover supported media, not guaranteed captioning across all games. For gameplay dialogue or sound cues, look for subtitles and audio-caption options in the title itself.

Does turning on HDR make an SDR game native HDR?

No. On PS5, Always On converts non-HDR content to HDR output; it does not establish that the game was authored with native HDR. On When Supported avoids forcing that conversion for non-HDR content.

Is Windows HDR Calibration a general PC calibration tool?

Microsoft documents the Windows HDR Calibration app for Windows 11. The instructions do not establish it as a generic calibration route for every PC or operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Xbox system high-contrast setting change every game?

Microsoft describes that system option specifically for navigating built-in apps. If you need stronger contrast during gameplay, check the individual game for its own high-contrast controls.
