Claude runs the work in a remote cloud environment with a fresh repository clone; it does not use your computer’s local files. Private repositories need an additional access grant through the Claude GitHub App, or a personally launched CLI session can use a GitHub CLI token.
Check account access and organization settings
Anthropic’s cloud quickstart lists Pro, Max, and Team plans, plus Enterprise users with premium seats or Chat + Claude Code seats. Availability and organization policy can change, so check the current Claude Code cloud quickstart if your account does not show the cloud interface.
For Team and Enterprise, an organization Owner must enable the GitHub connector before users can sign in through the browser flow. If you see an access-required message instead of a sign-in button, ask the Owner to enable the connector and then retry. Team and Enterprise organization users also need policy permission for remote sessions when using the CLI.
Connect GitHub and grant repository access
- Open claude.ai/code and sign in with the Claude account that has cloud-session access.
- Accept the GitHub authorization prompt to connect your account.
- For a public repository, select it after connecting; the connection can clone public repositories.
- For a private repository, install the Claude GitHub App on the account or organization that owns the repository, then grant the app access to that repository. An organization Owner may need to approve the installation.
Connecting a GitHub account by itself does not necessarily make every private repository available. If a repository is missing, check that the app is installed on the correct owner account or organization and that the repository is included in the app installation’s access selection.

Create or choose a cloud environment
A cloud environment holds network-access settings, environment variables, and optional setup scripts. The Default environment uses Trusted network access and has no custom environment variables or setup script, which is enough for a basic first task.
Pro and Max onboarding creates the Default environment. Team and Enterprise onboarding may instead show an environment form unless an Owner enabled Quick web setup. Quick web setup is optional: it affects whether /web-setup is enabled and whether onboarding creates an environment automatically. For projects that need dependencies installed or access to domains beyond the defaults, add a setup script or adjust the allowed network access in the environment configuration. Start a task in the browser
- Choose the repository and branch in the cloud interface.
- Select a permission mode appropriate to the work.
- Describe one specific task and submit it.
- Review the resulting diff in the browser or mobile interface, then use the available pull-request path if you want to propose the changes through GitHub.
Each submitted task gets its own session and branch. Closing the browser tab does not stop a running session; it continues until the task finishes and then idles.
Connect from the CLI with GitHub CLI
If you prefer to connect GitHub from a terminal, authenticate the Claude Code CLI with your Claude account and run /web-setup. The command reads the token produced by gh auth token, asks you to confirm sending it to Anthropic, and then connects the cloud session to repositories available to that token.

This route has broader scope than selecting repositories through the app: the token can grant access to every repository it can access. Do not approve a token unless that scope is appropriate. The command is unavailable when the organization has Zero Data Retention enabled; Team and Enterprise users also need an Owner to enable Quick web setup. The Claude GitHub App is still required for project threads. For supported external API hosts, Pro and Max documentation describes a separate API credential mechanism; do not put secrets in ordinary environment variables.

claude --cloud "Describe the task"
The VM clones the current directory’s GitHub remote at the current branch. Push any local commits the task needs before launching; a remote clone will not include commits that exist only on your machine. This cloud CLI flow requires an Anthropic account and is unavailable with third-party model providers such as Bedrock and Vertex AI.
If there is no GitHub remote or the Claude GitHub App is not installed, the CLI has a local-bundle fallback. Anthropic documents full-bundle behavior for repositories under 100 MB, with fallback behavior for larger repositories. Bundle contents and handling differ by operating system; on native Windows, uncommitted tracked changes upload as they are regardless of their names. Check or stash sensitive tracked edits before using that fallback. The cloud reference describes repository handling.

Choose the GitHub connection method

Understand what the cloud session can and cannot see
Anthropic-hosted sessions run in an isolated cloud VM with a fresh clone of the repository. Files committed to Git are available through that clone; machine-only configuration and uncommitted local work generally are not. Put required startup steps in the cloud environment or commit the project files the task needs.
For Anthropic-hosted environments, GitHub credentials remain encrypted on Anthropic’s servers and do not enter the session VM; Git operations use a proxy. Ordinary environment variables, by contrast, are readable by anyone using the environment, so do not store secrets there.
Cloud sessions are different from Remote Control
A cloud session runs Claude Code on cloud infrastructure instead of your machine. Remote Control is different: it lets a browser or phone steer a session that continues running on your own computer, using local files and configuration. Choose cloud when you want a remote fresh clone; choose Remote Control when the work should stay on your machine.
