The right choice depends on whether you want brightness as well as color temperature to change, what your lights support, and how much control you want over the schedule.
Choose Flux, Adaptive Lighting, or your own automation
| Approach | What it does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Flux | Home Assistant’s built-in integration changes color temperature by time of day for configured lights that are on. Its documentation describes brighter light during the day and a fade toward warmer red/orange tones at night. The documentation describes it as changing light temperature “similar to the way flux works on your computer, using circadian rhythm.” | You want a built-in, time-based color-temperature schedule and do not need a custom brightness plan. |
| Adaptive Lighting | A community-maintained custom component, installed through HACS, that adapts supported lights using sun position and time. It can adjust brightness and color, and provides manual-control behavior. | You want brightness and color adaptation, component options, or manual override behavior, and are comfortable installing a community component. |
| Custom automations | Home Assistant light actions can set brightness, color temperature, and transitions. The Sun integration supplies local sunrise, sunset, dawn, and dusk events based on the configured home location. | You want direct control of timing, transitions, and automation logic and are willing to maintain it yourself. |
There is no universal best option. If changing color temperature alone is enough, Flux is a straightforward starting point. If brightness also needs to track the day, consider Adaptive Lighting or a custom automation. Before choosing, check whether the target lights expose the required controls and whether you depend on scenes or frequent manual changes.
Check whether your lights support the changes
Home Assistant’s light entity exposes different features depending on the device and its integration. A schedule cannot add a capability the bulb does not provide: verify the actual entity before building an automation or buying hardware. The Home Assistant Light documentation describes supported light properties and actions, including brightness and color temperature where available.
- For dimming, the entity needs to support brightness.
- For warm-to-cool white changes, choose a dimmable smart bulb with adjustable white color temperature and confirm that Home Assistant exposes that control.
- RGB-capable lights may be usable by Adaptive Lighting as a color fallback, but that is not the same as confirming every bulb or integration will behave identically.
- Check the exact model’s integration and exposed features. “Smart bulb” or brand compatibility alone does not guarantee that the schedule can control every property.
Set up a time-of-day schedule
Use Flux for a built-in color-temperature change
Flux is a Home Assistant integration, so it does not require installing the Adaptive Lighting custom component through HACS. Follow the current configuration steps in the Flux integration documentation, select the lights to control, and ensure those lights are on when the integration is expected to act. Flux is focused on the time-based temperature change; do not assume it provides the same brightness controls or manual behavior as Adaptive Lighting.

Use Adaptive Lighting for brightness and color adaptation
Install Adaptive Lighting through HACS and configure it for the lights you want to adapt. The project documents brightness as required, with color-temperature support preferred and RGB as a fallback. Its options and behavior can change as the community-maintained project evolves, so consult the Adaptive Lighting project repository for current installation and configuration details.
Use sun events in your own automation
For schedules based on local daylight, first make sure Home Assistant’s home location is correct. The Sun integration calculates sunrise, sunset, dawn, and dusk for that location and makes those events available to automations. Combine those triggers with the light actions supported by your entities to set brightness, color temperature, and transition duration. A custom automation gives you control over the schedule, but you must decide what happens at each event and how manual changes should be handled.

Account for Hue scenes and manual control
Hue lights can be connected through Home Assistant’s official Philips Hue integration using a Hue bridge. The Philips Hue integration documentation covers connecting the bridge and importing scenes. For controlling several Hue lights together, Home Assistant recommends using Hue scenes for a smoother result.
Adaptive Lighting does not update scenes stored on the Hue bridge. If you activate a bridge-stored scene outside the Home Assistant control path, do not expect that scene itself to be rewritten by Adaptive Lighting. Treat the scene and the component’s ongoing adaptation as separate mechanisms when deciding how your room should behave.
