To make apps more usable on a foldable phone’s inner display, open each app while the phone is unfolded, check the device’s display and continuity settings, and use split screen only when the app still has enough room. If an app continues to waste space or clip controls, its own layout may not adapt to the larger or changing window; phone settings cannot always fix that.
Start by checking the app while the phone is unfolded
Open the app on the inner display and inspect how it uses the available window. Check whether content fills the screen, text is comfortable to read, and buttons or other controls are reachable. Unfolding changes the app window’s dimensions, and a well-adapted app may change its layout in response. The useful layout also depends on how the app window is being used: rotating the phone or opening another app in multi-window changes the space available.
Try the app in the way you normally use it before changing settings. This gives you a baseline and helps distinguish a display preference from an app layout that does not adjust to the window.
Which settings can you control?
There are two layers to the experience: device settings can change how the phone presents or arranges apps, while the app’s own implementation determines how its content reflows within the available space.

Find the relevant settings on a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold
Samsung’s guidance covers display layout and zoom, app continuity, Flex mode, and multi-window on Galaxy foldables. The exact options and paths depend on the model and One UI version, so use Settings search if a menu is named differently or does not appear on your phone.
- Open Settings and look for Display settings. Check the available screen layout and zoom controls to adjust how content is presented.
- Search Settings for Flex mode if you want to check how supported apps behave when the phone is partly folded.
- Search Settings for App continuity to review the behavior when moving between the outer and inner screens.
- Look for Multi window or the device’s split-screen controls when you want to use more than one app at once.
Not every Galaxy foldable offers every feature, and settings do not guarantee that every third-party app will use the inner display well. For Samsung’s current device-specific instructions, see Use Flex mode and view apps on Galaxy foldable phones.

Use split screen when each app still has room
Multi-window can be useful on the larger display, but it gives each app a smaller window. If an app becomes cramped, text wraps awkwardly, or controls are harder to reach, try it full-screen instead. Support and behavior depend on both the device and the apps. Android’s foldable guidance notes that large-screen multi-window behavior differs from a conventional phone; Android 12 and later default to multi-window mode on large screens. When the problem is the app’s layout
If an app letterboxes, leaves large areas unused, clips controls, or keeps a phone-only arrangement after you have checked relevant settings, it may not adapt well to the window. Those symptoms do not by themselves establish that the app is defective; behavior can vary by app, device, and software version.

Android recommends that app layouts respond to the window’s dimensions, while Samsung advises developers to optimize layouts for both the inner and outer screens and support continuity between them. Device settings can alter presentation or window behavior, but they cannot make an app rearrange content that its own layout does not support. For an app to feel natural on a foldable, it needs to handle changes in window size and, when relevant, the device’s folded posture. Samsung’s app-continuity guidance explains that disabling activity resizing signals that an app does not support multi-window and can affect continuity when folding or unfolding. Android documents resizability and multi-window behavior as baseline requirements for apps targeting API 36 on large-screen devices with a smallest width of at least 600 dp. Google Play’s API 36 target requirement begins in August 2026, according to Android Developers’ guidance on orientation, aspect ratio, and resizability. This platform policy does not mean every app will have an ideal foldable-specific layout; it addresses compatibility behavior, while the app’s design determines how its content is arranged.
