Set up Apple Home in the Home app on an iPhone or iPad, then add each compatible accessory by scanning its setup code or entering it manually. You can use many accessories without a home hub, but a hub is needed for features such as controlling devices while away, sharing access, and running automations; Thread and Matter have additional requirements that depend on the accessory and your software.
Before you add an accessory
Check the product packaging or manual for Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter compatibility, and note any network, hub, or manufacturer-app requirements. Some devices need a firmware update or initial setup in the maker’s app before they can be paired with Home. Apple’s accessory troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the product’s instructions for these requirements.
- Use an iPhone or iPad to add accessories; Apple says accessories cannot be added from a Mac. See Apple’s instructions for adding an accessory.
- Turn on and power the accessory, and keep it near your iPhone or iPad during setup.
- Have the accessory’s QR code or printed setup code ready. For Matter, the code may be 11 or 21 digits.
- Check whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread. Some Wi-Fi accessories require a 2.4 GHz network and may not work on 5 GHz.
Create a home and add your first accessory
Apple’s iPhone setup guide describes adding accessories in the Home app. The first-use flow can help you create a home and define rooms; you can add more rooms and organize them later.
- Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad. Follow the prompts to create a home if you have not already created one.
- Make sure the accessory is powered on, ready to pair, and close to your device. Complete any manufacturer-app setup required by its instructions.
- In Home, tap the Add Accessory button and follow the on-screen steps.
- Scan the accessory’s setup QR code with your device’s camera when prompted. If you cannot scan it, choose the option to enter the code manually and type the Apple Home code printed on the accessory or included with it.
- If a Matter accessory has already been paired in another app, tap More Options if shown. You may need to generate or retrieve a pairing code in the manufacturer’s app.
- Choose a room and give the accessory a clear name. The name helps you identify it in Home and use it in Siri requests.
Home may suggest automations during setup. You can accept a suggestion or skip it and set up automations later.

Decide whether you need a home hub
A home hub is useful when you want to control accessories while away from home, share control with other people, or run automations. Apple supports HomePod and HomePod mini as hubs when configured, and Apple TV as a hub when assigned to a room. See Apple’s home hub setup instructions.
| What you want to do | Hub guidance |
|---|---|
| Set up and control compatible accessories at home | A hub is not necessary for every accessory or use case. Check the accessory’s own requirements. |
| Control accessories while away, share control, or use automations | Set up a home hub with a supported HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV. |
| Add a Matter accessory | Apple’s hub setup page describes a hub as required for Matter, but its troubleshooting guidance says an iPhone on iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without one. Apple still recommends a hub for the best experience. Check the current requirements for your device and intended features. |
| Use a Thread accessory | Use a Thread-enabled hub or compatible third-party Thread border router. Apple lists HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-capable options; verify the exact model and configuration. |
The Matter guidance differs between Apple support pages, so the iOS version and the features you need matter. The exception Apple describes is specifically for adding and controlling Matter accessories from an iPhone on iOS 18 or later; it does not remove Thread’s separate requirement for a Thread-capable hub or compatible border router.

If Home cannot add the accessory
Work through these checks before restarting setup:
- Confirm compatibility and permission. Check that the product supports Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter, and that the home’s owner has allowed you to add and edit accessories.
- Check your iPhone or iPad. Install available software updates and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Check the Wi-Fi network. Keep your iPhone or iPad, existing accessories, and home hubs on the same Wi-Fi network. If the accessory requires 2.4 GHz, make sure it is not trying to join a 5 GHz network.
- Check the manufacturer’s setup steps. Look for required firmware updates, additional hardware, or an initial setup step in the maker’s app.
- Clear an old pairing if needed. If the accessory was paired to another home, reset it according to the manufacturer’s instructions before trying again.
- Improve the connection and retry. Bring the accessory closer to the router, then restart the accessory and any home hubs if setup stalls.
For issue-specific guidance, see Apple’s troubleshooting steps for accessories that cannot be added to Home.
