Windows usually detects headphones automatically, but detection does not always make them the active playback device. Connect or pair the headphones, select them under Output, then check the app’s volume and output settings.

These instructions cover Bluetooth, USB and 3.5 mm headphones, microphone selection, one-sided audio, connection drops, and common “connected but no sound” problems on Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Before you start

Have the headphones powered on and close to the PC. For Bluetooth models, charge them and put them into pairing mode. Low battery can prevent pairing mode from starting or make a connection drop. If the headphones are already connected to another device, disconnect them there before pairing with Windows. Not all Bluetooth headphones report their battery percentage to Windows; check the headphones themselves if no level appears.

For wired headphones, check the connector type:

  • 3.5 mm headphones: plug them into the headphone output. On some desktop PCs, the correct jack is on the front of the case; on others it is on the rear audio panel.
  • USB headphones: plug them into a USB port. They appear in Windows as their own audio device, separate from the built-in speakers.
  • USB-C headphones: connect them to a compatible USB-C port. A USB-C port does not always support analog audio, so a passive adapter may not work with every PC.

Set up Bluetooth headphones on Windows 11

  1. Turn on the headphones and hold their pairing button until the status light or voice prompt indicates pairing mode.
  2. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Switch Bluetooth on.
  4. Select Add device > Bluetooth.
  5. Choose the headphones when they appear. Complete any confirmation shown by Windows or the headphones.

After pairing, select the taskbar Sound icon and choose the headphones from the output-device list. You can also open Start > Settings > System > Sound and select them under Output.

Make Bluetooth headphones the default device

If Windows keeps switching back to the speakers:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Select More sound settings.
  3. On the Playback tab, right-click the headphones.
  4. Select Set as default.

Some Bluetooth headsets show separate entries for music and calls. Choose the stereo or headphones entry for normal music playback. The hands-free or headset entry may use a lower-quality mode when an application is using the microphone.

Set up Bluetooth headphones on Windows 10

  1. Put the headphones into pairing mode.
  2. Open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
  3. Turn Bluetooth on.
  4. Select Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth.
  5. Choose the headphones from the list.

To switch playback to them, select the taskbar Speakers icon, select the arrow beside the volume control, and choose the headphones. Alternatively, open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Choose your output device.

To set them as the default, open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Related settings > Sound Control Panel. On Playback, select the headphones and click Set Default.

Use wired headphones

  1. Connect the headphones to the 3.5 mm, USB, or USB-C port.
  2. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  3. Under Output, select the connected headphones.
  4. Raise the volume and confirm that the device is not muted.

USB headphones are a separate audio device, not simply an extension of the built-in speakers. Windows may continue sending sound to the monitor, laptop speakers, or another USB device until you explicitly select the headphones under Output or set them as the default playback device.

If the headphones do not appear, or Windows says No audio output device is installed, the required audio driver may be missing, disabled, or failing to load.

Control Windows and app volume

Windows can have sound enabled while an individual app is muted or assigned to a different device. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.

Check these settings:

  • Under Volume, raise the System volume.
  • Under Apps, raise the affected app’s volume and make sure it is not muted.
  • Set the app’s Output device to the headphones, or choose Default if they are already the Windows default.
  • Check the app’s own volume control. Music players, browsers, games, and video-call applications can mute themselves independently.

If sound works in one application but not another, the volume mixer and the app’s audio settings are more likely to be responsible than the headphones.

Fix quiet, distorted, or crackling headphone audio

Turn off audio enhancements

Enhancements can cause missing sound, distortion, crackling, or unexpectedly low volume on some headphones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound, select the headphones under Output, open Audio enhancements, and choose Off.

In Windows 10, open Start > Settings > System > Sound, select the playback device, open Properties > Enhancements, select Disable all enhancements, and click OK. If the Enhancements tab is missing, check Advanced for available audio effects and disable them.

Try another audio format

An unsupported default format can produce poor-quality, distorted, crackling, or missing audio. In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > System > Sound > [your headphones] > Advanced > Default format, choose another format, and test playback.

For some Bluetooth headphones, Microsoft specifies this workaround:

Also check Settings > Accessibility > Audio. If system-wide Mono audio is enabled, Windows warns that stereo may not work correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the headphone microphone

Connecting headphones does not always make their microphone the active input. Open Settings > System > Sound and select the headphone microphone under Input. Speak and watch the input meter respond.

In a calling or recording app, open its audio settings as well. Select the headphone microphone there rather than assuming the app follows Windows automatically.

On Windows 11, stereo playback while a Bluetooth microphone is active requires a compatible PC, Bluetooth LE Audio headphones, and the required manufacturer drivers. Without that support, audio may become mono while the microphone is in use. If the supported control appears, open Settings > System > Sound > [Bluetooth LE Audio device] > Output settings > Format. Under Format when microphone is active, choose Mono (1 channel) or Stereo (2 channels). If Stereo causes silence or glitches, try Mono for compatibility.

Bluetooth connected but there is no sound

A Bluetooth connection only confirms that the devices are communicating; it does not prove that Windows is using the headphones for playback. Work through these checks in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the headphones under Output.
  2. Open the volume mixer and check system and app volume.
  3. Set the headphones as the default playback device.

  5. Try the 48 kHz, 16-bit, two-channel format.
  6. Close and reopen the application that is producing no sound.
  7. Restart the PC from Start > Power > Restart.

If pairing is still unreliable, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11, or Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices in Windows 10. Turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, turn it on again, and retry.

Remove and pair the headphones again

Re-pairing clears a damaged or stale Bluetooth profile.

Windows 11: open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices, find the headphones, select More options (…) > Remove device, then choose Add device and pair them again.

Windows 10: open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices, select the headphones, click Remove device, then use Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth to add them again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the headphones charged and in pairing mode during this process. If they do not appear, power-cycle them, move them closer to the PC, and disconnect them from other nearby devices.

Stop Bluetooth headphones from disconnecting

  • Charge the headphones fully and keep them within normal Bluetooth range.
  • Turn off Windows Energy Saver Mode by selecting the taskbar Battery icon and disabling it if enabled.
  • Install available Windows and manufacturer driver updates.
  • Turn Bluetooth off for 10 seconds, turn it on again, and reconnect.
  • Restart Windows.

Frequent drops can result from power-saving behavior, outdated Bluetooth drivers, or temporary system problems. If the issue began immediately after an update, check the PC maker’s support page for a newer Bluetooth driver.

Windows 10 support status

Windows 10 continues to run after its support end date, but Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. The headphone steps still work, but a persistent driver or Bluetooth problem may be harder to resolve on an unsupported installation. If the PC supports it, moving to Windows 11 is the longer-term option.

FAQ

Why are my headphones connected but not playing sound?

Bluetooth pairing and audio output are separate settings. Open Windows sound settings, select the headphones under Output, set them as the default playback device, and check the app’s entry in Volume mixer.

How do I switch from laptop speakers to headphones?

Select the taskbar Sound or Speakers icon and choose the headphones. Alternatively, open Settings > System > Sound and select them under Output.

Why do USB headphones not work automatically?

USB headphones are usually a separate audio device. Windows may continue using the speakers or monitor, so select the USB headphones under Output or set them as the default playback device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is Bluetooth headphone audio distorted or crackling?

Turn off Audio enhancements and try a different Default format. For some Bluetooth devices, 2 channels, 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) can help.

Why does my Bluetooth headset become mono during calls?

Stereo playback during microphone use on Windows 11 requires a compatible PC, Bluetooth LE Audio headphones, and required manufacturer drivers. Without that support, audio may become mono while the microphone is active.

What should I do if only one earbud works?

Check that Left and Right output levels are equal, check the Mono audio setting, and reset or re-pair the earbuds. One-sided playback can result from incomplete earbud pairing.

The Bottom Line

For most headphone problems, connect or pair the headphones, select them under Settings > System > Sound > Output, check the Volume mixer, and set them as the default device. If needed, disable enhancements and test another audio format. For unstable Bluetooth, charge the headphones, reset Bluetooth, remove and re-pair the device, disable Energy Saver, install updates, and restart Windows.
