ReadTheDocs hosts the documentation; a project’s CI configuration connects the publishing job to it.
This guide follows the LF Releng Project Documentation Guide. Its service setup details may change, so check current ReadTheDocs screens and your project’s CI conventions before applying the steps.
How the documentation toolchain fits together
The components have distinct roles rather than competing with one another:
- Sphinx generates the documentation site, with reStructuredText as the primary authoring format recommended by the guide.
lfdocs-confprovides a convenience package for common documentation dependencies and configuration.global-jjbsupplies job templates for building and publishing documentation.- ReadTheDocs hosts the published documentation and can organize related documentation sets as subprojects.
The guide describes a workflow built around these tools; it does not compare their performance with alternatives or establish product versions.

Organize the project site and documentation sets
A project-level documentation site can act as a gateway or index to the project’s documentation. Individual documentation sets can be configured as ReadTheDocs subprojects under that main project, allowing related material to be presented beneath a project documentation URL.
When documentation sets are built separately but need to link to one another, the guide recommends Sphinx’s intersphinx extension. In a set’s conf.py, map a local namespace to the external documentation URL. That lets Sphinx resolve cross-references to the other set rather than treating each site as an isolated publication. See the guide’s structure and intersphinx guidance for its configuration context.

Configure ReadTheDocs and the publishing job
The LF Releng guide’s setup sequence connects a ReadTheDocs project to the project’s CI-managed publishing job. The exact interface and project-specific values should be confirmed for your project.
- Create or configure the ReadTheDocs project. The guide specifies an anonymous HTTP Git clone URL as the repository address.
- Grant maintenance access. Add
lf-rtdas a maintainer, as described in the guide. - Set up a subproject if needed. Configure a child documentation project as a subproject beneath the main project documentation site when the project structure calls for it.
- Create a generic webhook. Record the webhook URL and token generated for the project; the publishing job needs these project-specific values.
- Configure CI. Add the ReadTheDocs job values to
project.yamlin the project’sci-managementrepository, following that repository’s current conventions. - Trigger publication after configuration changes. If the
lfdocs-confpatches have already been merged, the guide says to issue a remerge so the publishing job can push the documentation to ReadTheDocs.
These are the steps described in the LF Releng publication instructions; the guide does not establish that current ReadTheDocs labels, webhook behavior, or CI conventions are unchanged.

Before relying on a published site
- Confirm the Git clone URL is the intended anonymous HTTP URL and points to the documentation source repository.
- Check that the correct ReadTheDocs project and any child subprojects are configured for the intended documentation sets.
- Ensure the project-specific webhook URL and token are available to the CI configuration process and placed according to current project policy.
- Verify the job configuration in
project.yamland follow the project’s current CI procedures to initiate a build and publication. - For cross-document links, check that the intersphinx namespace and external documentation URL in
conf.pycorrespond to the intended documentation set.
