To add a smart home device to Apple Home, use an iPhone or iPad, turn on Bluetooth, and confirm the exact accessory supports Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter. In the Home app, tap Add Accessory, scan its setup code or follow the on-screen pairing steps, then give it a clear name and assign it to a room. A hub is optional for local Matter control from an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, but it enables remote access, shared control, and automations.

Check compatibility and prepare the accessory

Compatibility is specific to the model: working in a manufacturer’s app or another smart-home ecosystem does not automatically mean a device can be added to Apple Home. Look for explicit Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter support, then check the model’s manual for Wi-Fi band, bridge, Thread, firmware, and setup requirements.

  • Use an iPhone or iPad to add the accessory; Apple says a Mac cannot add accessories.
  • Turn on Bluetooth and keep the phone or tablet and accessory close to the home network during setup.
  • Power on the accessory and install any required firmware updates or manufacturer app before pairing.
  • Keep the setup code and packaging nearby. If someone else owns the Home, they may need to grant you permission to add and edit accessories.

Some accessories require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, a vendor bridge, or additional hardware. Confirm those requirements for the exact model rather than assuming that a Matter label guarantees every feature or connection type will work in your setup. See Apple’s accessory setup instructions and Matter accessory guidance.

Add and name the device in Home

  1. Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad and tap Add Accessory.
  2. Scan the accessory’s QR code, or choose the setup-code or nearby-pairing option shown on screen. Apple documents 8-digit Apple Home codes and 11- or 21-digit Matter codes; follow the flow for your accessory.
  3. If a Matter accessory is already paired with another ecosystem, tap More Options and follow the manufacturer’s process to obtain its sharing or pairing code.
  4. Complete the prompts, assign the accessory to a room, and give it a short, distinctive name that will be easy to say to Siri.

Codes may be printed on the device, its packaging, or its documentation, so retain them until setup is finished. Paired Matter accessories sync using iCloud Keychain; Apple says the pairing keys stored there are end-to-end encrypted. You can inspect them at Settings > General > Matter Accessories. For details, see Set up accessories with Home on iPhone and Pair and manage your Matter accessories.

meross Smart Plug 15A, Works with Apple HomeKit, Voice & APP Control 4 Pack
  • Remote Control: To enable HomeKit remote control, you need a HomePod, an Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, or an iPad. Set any of these Apple devices in your house as a HomeKit bridge and connect it to your home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. Keep in mind that once your HomeKit bridge is set up, it has to be kept online. If it is powered off or disconnected from the Wi-Fi, it will fail to respond when you intend to control the device remotely.
  • Voice Control: You can control your devices hands free, just give voice commands to turn on/off the connected devices. Compatible with Apple HomeKit, Apple Watch, Siri, Carplay, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant.
  • Compact Size: Smart plug occupies only one socket, the device allows you to stack two mini smart plugs in the same outlet, which is convenient and practical.
  • Schedule: You can schedule connected devices to turn on and off automatically by smart plugs. Save energy when lights are not needed or left on by accident. Sunrise and sunset setting are supported.
  • Quality: The meross Smart outlet is made of PC flame retardant material, and has been approved for safety and quality assurance. Certified by ETL and FCC, it supports home appliance up to 15A.

Automations

Automations trigger actions based on a time or an accessory’s activity or state. A home hub supports automations; without one, plan on controlling compatible devices locally rather than relying on hub-enabled features. Apple’s Home app overview describes scenes, automations, and favorites, while its organization guide covers rooms, zones, and groups.

Decide whether you need a home hub

Apple’s current Matter guidance says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories from Home without a hub. Apple nevertheless recommends a hub for the best experience. A hub is useful when you want remote control, shared access, or automations rather than control limited to your local setup.

What you want to do Hub guidance
Add and control Matter accessories locally from Home No hub required with an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, according to Apple’s Matter guidance.
Control accessories remotely, share access, or use automations Use a home hub; Apple identifies HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as options.
Operate a Thread accessory Check the accessory’s exact Thread and hub requirements. Local pairing or management is not the same as having a full-time Thread border router for ongoing operation.

HomePod becomes a hub when set up; Apple TV becomes one after it is assigned to a room. Thread adds a separate capability question: a compatible Thread-capable hub or border router may be needed for ongoing operation, even where an iPhone can locally pair or manage the accessory. Do not buy a hub solely because a device uses Matter; first check your iOS version, the features you need, and whether the accessory uses Thread. Apple’s home hub setup guide explains hub setup.

Fix pairing and connection problems

Home says “Unable to add”

  • Verify that the exact model supports Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter and that it is powered on.
  • Move the accessory closer to the router and keep Bluetooth enabled on the iPhone or iPad.
  • Check the manufacturer’s app for setup steps or firmware updates; restart a required bridge or hub.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s reset instructions only after simpler checks, since resetting may require pairing the device again.

The accessory reports a network incompatibility

Check the manual for its supported Wi-Fi band. Some accessories do not support 5 GHz and need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Apple’s Matter support guidance and setup guide describe setup requirements and pairing flows.

Home shows “No Response”

First determine whether one manufacturer’s devices or accessories across several brands are affected. If the problem is limited to one brand, check that maker’s app, firmware, bridge, and the accessory’s pairing state. If multiple brands are affected, work through the wider network:

  1. Update and reopen Home, and connect the controlling iPhone or iPad to the same Wi-Fi network as the accessories.
  2. Restart affected accessories and any bridges or hubs.
  3. If the issue continues, restart the router, then the iPhone or iPad.
  4. Check whether VPN or third-party security software is interfering with network connectivity.

For third-party Thread devices, Apple advises disconnecting them for five minutes, reconnecting, and then allowing ten minutes for the network to stabilize. Remove or reset an accessory only as a later step and follow the manufacturer’s directions, since it may need to be paired again. Apple’s troubleshooting steps for unresponsive HomeKit or Matter accessories give the current sequence.
