Before the first takeoff, charge the aircraft battery and controller, install DJI Fly, remove the gimbal protector, activate the drone in the app, and clear all preflight warnings. Then confirm the Home Point is refreshed and choose a signal-loss and Return-to-Home (RTH) altitude that suit the obstacles around your flight area.
1. Prepare the aircraft and check the box contents
Compare the included parts with the box contents and inspect the aircraft for visible damage. Remove the gimbal protector, unfold the arms fully, and check that the propellers are installed correctly and are not bent or damaged. DJI’s Mini 5 Pro downloads and guide says the aircraft ships with propellers installed and directs users to replace damaged or deformed blades according to its instructions.
Do not fly with a damaged propeller. Use the model-specific replacement instructions rather than guessing how to remove or fit a blade.
2. Charge the battery and prepare your controller
Charge the Intelligent Flight Battery before use and make sure the controller has enough charge. Prepare its sticks and antennas as described for the controller included with your aircraft.

The setup differs by bundle. DJI’s Mini 5 Pro instructions cover both the DJI RC 2, which has a built-in screen, and the DJI RC-N3, which uses a connected mobile device. Check the contents of your own box; do not assume every bundle includes the same controller or accessories.
3. Install DJI Fly and activate the aircraft
- Install DJI Fly from DJI’s official DJI Fly download page.
- Power on the aircraft and the included controller. If you have an RC-N3, connect your mobile device to the controller as directed for that kit.
- Open DJI Fly, connect to or link the aircraft if the app asks, and follow the on-screen activation prompts. Keep the mobile device online during activation.
- If the app reports that the aircraft and controller are not linked, use its linking prompts. DJI says the RC-N3 does not require separate controller activation; do not assume every controller uses the same cable or screen flow.
DJI requires first-use aircraft activation through DJI Fly. The app’s prompts may vary with the controller and software version, so follow what appears on your screen rather than relying on a fixed sequence of button presses.

4. Complete firmware prompts without interrupting the update
If DJI Fly offers a firmware update, read the prompt and follow its instructions. DJI’s beginner guide advises keeping power connected and leaving DJI Fly open during the update. The aircraft may power off when the update finishes; restart it if the app instructs you to do so. The available guidance does not establish a firmware version that every new aircraft should show.
5. Set RTH and check the app before takeoff
Choose a signal-loss response and RTH altitude
DJI recommends setting the aircraft to return to home if it loses signal. Set the RTH altitude higher than relevant surrounding obstacles, such as trees or buildings, while respecting any local altitude limits. An RTH setting cannot guarantee a collision-free return: terrain, structures, wind, battery level, GPS and signal conditions can all affect the result. Check flight mode, obstacle response and Home Point
For a first flight, use Normal mode and check the obstacle-avoidance behavior shown in DJI Fly. DJI’s beginner guidance says obstacle avoidance is disabled in Sport mode, so do not select Sport mode expecting those protections to remain active.
Before takeoff, resolve app warnings, check that the signal is adequate, and wait for DJI Fly to show that the Home Point has refreshed or is ready. Do not launch while a warning remains unresolved or before the Home Point is established.

6. Make the first flight short and conservative
- Choose an open, permitted location with clear takeoff and landing space, away from people and obstacles.
- Keep the aircraft in visual line of sight and make small, deliberate control inputs. Stay close enough to maintain a simple, unobstructed return path.
- Watch the battery and land with reserve power. DJI warns that cancelling low-battery RTH can leave too little power for a safe landing; if the aircraft cannot return, it may land automatically.
- Check the aviation rules that apply where you fly. Requirements depend on jurisdiction, and this guide does not establish the rules for a particular location.
DJI’s UK product listing states a maximum flight time of 36 minutes for the standard Intelligent Flight Battery and up to 52 minutes for the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus. These are manufacturer-stated maxima, not expected durations for every flight; battery choice and actual conditions affect flight time. Land before the battery becomes critical. After landing, power down the aircraft and controller, then refit the gimbal protector before transport. If the aircraft gets wet in rain, DJI says to return and land as soon as possible and wait until the drone is fully dry inside and out before using it again.
