LG’s suggested values for natural, artificial, and dark-room lighting are useful starting points—not universal calibration results. If the screen seems unexpectedly dim, check Energy Saving and Eco settings before changing picture controls.
Choose a picture mode for the room and content
The picture you see depends on more than the TV’s settings: room light, screen reflectance, the OLED’s capabilities, and the video itself all matter. LG recommends different starting modes for broad lighting conditions. Those recommendations can help you choose a preset, but they do not make one mode objectively best for every model or room. LG’s picture-settings guide describes the categories and settings.
- Bright room with natural light: Try Vivid if you want a more prominent image in strong ambient light.
- Room lit by lamps: Try Standard as a general starting point.
- Dark room or film viewing: Try Cinema. Film viewers can also look for Filmmaker Mode, which is intended for a film-oriented presentation.
On supported TVs, Filmmaker Mode can start automatically. LG documents an auto-start option for webOS 22, but availability and menu controls vary by model and software generation. If you cannot find the option, consult your TV’s model-specific guide rather than assuming the feature is missing from all LG OLEDs.
Use LG’s suggested settings as a starting point
LG’s support guide published September 3, 2026 lists the following values for three lighting categories. They are the manufacturer’s recommendations, not independent measurements or guaranteed calibration targets. The labels and available controls can differ by model, and your room and source affect the result.

Use the values for the matching mode only if your TV exposes the same controls. If a setting is absent or the picture looks unnatural, do not force a numerical match: select the mode that suits your viewing and make modest adjustments from there.
Set up the picture in a practical order
- Set the room and mode first. Choose the preset that best fits the light in the room and what you are watching. For films, compare Cinema with Filmmaker Mode if your TV offers it.
- Check the picture with your usual content. Use material you actually watch, and judge whether the image is comfortable and clear rather than trying to maximize every slider.
- Adjust brightness-related controls only as needed. If the whole image is dim, first check energy-saving features (see below). Then revisit the active picture mode and its controls.
- Recheck each input and video format. LG says picture settings may vary by input, such as broadcast versus HDMI, and the picture can differ between regular video and HDR or Dolby Vision. Review the mode for the source and format you are watching.
Fix an LG OLED picture that looks too dim
LG identifies Energy Saving and an unsuitable Picture Mode among common reasons an LG TV may look dark. Before treating dimness as a panel problem, check these settings. LG’s troubleshooting page gives different menu paths for webOS 26, webOS 22 and newer, webOS 6, and webOS 5 or earlier, so use the path for your TV’s software version rather than relying on a single universal route. LG’s dark-screen troubleshooting guide lists those version-specific instructions.

- Check whether Energy Saving is enabled; disable it only if you want the TV to stop reducing brightness to conserve power.
- Check Eco or Auto Power Save features where available.
- Confirm the active Picture Mode is appropriate for the room and content.
- Switch between the relevant input or format and check its picture settings separately.
LG describes these as common causes, not a diagnosis for every dim-screen issue. If the screen remains unusually dark after checking them, consult the support information for your exact model.
Understand why settings can change between sources
A picture that looks different after changing from broadcast TV to an HDMI device—or from regular video to HDR or Dolby Vision—does not necessarily mean a setting was lost. LG notes that picture controls can vary by input and content format. Check the picture mode while the source and format in question are active; do not assume one set of adjustments will look identical everywhere.

LG documents Pixel Cleaning or Pixel Refresher controls under different menu paths across OLED generations. Its guidance is to switch the TV off with the remote and leave it connected to power so the TV can carry out panel maintenance. Follow the instructions for your model if it offers a manual Pixel Cleaning control; do not repeatedly start manual cleaning as a way to tune picture quality.
