Build the rig around the shot
Fixed shots: start with a holder and tripod
For a talking head, interview, demonstration, or time-lapse, clamp the phone securely in a stable holder mounted on a tripod. Apple recommends a stable surface or tripod for time-lapse, and specifically calls for a tripod for low-light time-lapse on iPhone 12 or later. Using a tripod for other static shots is a practical way to keep the framing fixed, not a guarantee of a particular image-quality improvement. Apple’s time-lapse guidance
Before recording, check that the holder does not cover a lens, button, microphone opening, or the charging port. Test both portrait and landscape orientation if you may need to change formats; some holders need to be repositioned or rotated to keep the phone secure.
Moving shots: use a controlled grip and supported stabilization
For walking or other moving shots, hold the iPhone firmly and check the stabilization options available on your model. Apple says Action mode improves stabilization while recording in Video mode on supported models. Enhanced Stabilization is also model-dependent; where available, it is enabled by default and slightly zooms the image, so allow for the tighter crop when framing. These camera features do not remove the need to choose a suitable support for a locked shot. If your framing or movement matters, make a short test recording and review it before filming the full take.
Decide whether a cage solves a real mounting need
A basic fixed setup may need only a compatible phone holder and tripod. Add a cage when you need extra mounting points, handles, or a more flexible way to attach accessories such as a microphone, light, or tripod plate. Check the cage’s compatibility with your exact iPhone model, whether your case can remain on, and whether the arrangement leaves the lenses, buttons, microphones, and connector accessible. A cage adds mounting options; it does not make an incompatible phone or cable fit.
Choose a microphone based on where the speaker will be
For a speaker who moves: consider a wireless lavalier
A wireless lavalier system places a microphone near the speaker while its receiver connects to the phone. That can be useful when someone moves around or turns away from the iPhone. The important practical question is whether the particular transmitter, receiver, and connection accessories work with your phone and recording app—not whether the kit is described generally as being for phones. For a speaker in one place: a wired or phone-mounted mic may be simpler
If the subject stays near the camera, a wired microphone or a directional microphone mounted on or near the phone can be a straightforward option. Choose based on placement and the recording setup you need; available connection instructions do not establish that one mic type sounds better than another in every situation. Verify the entire connection chain
Trace the connection from microphone or transmitter to receiver, cable or adapter, iPhone port, and recording app. Case thickness can prevent a plug from seating fully, and an app may not handle an accessory exactly as expected. Make a test recording and play it back to verify that the intended mic is supplying audio.

iPhone 15 and later use USB-C; earlier iPhones may use Lightning. Apple’s connector guidance says USB-C iPhone models can connect to microphones. RØDE specifies different cables or adapters for particular setups: some Lightning configurations require an MFi-certified cable or an Apple camera adapter, while USB-C instructions identify cables for specific arrangements. Do not assume a cable, receiver, or microphone works across every iPhone and app. Check the current instructions for the exact model and accessories. On iPhone, open Settings > Camera > Record Video to review the resolution, frame-rate, HDR, and stabilization options available on your model. Apple notes that higher resolutions and faster frame rates create larger video files. Choose settings for the intended delivery and available storage rather than selecting the maximum by default. Audio recording choices vary too. Apple says iPhone 16 or later records video in Spatial Audio by default and offers Spatial Audio, Stereo, or Mono choices; earlier models may show different options.
