To set up an iPhone Air, first choose how to move your data, then connect to Wi-Fi, sign in to your Apple Account, configure device security and recovery, and activate cellular service. The exact cellular setup depends on your iPhone model, carrier, and region.
Before you start: prepare your old device and choose a transfer method
If you have a working iPhone or iPad nearby, Apple’s Quick Start can guide you through moving to the iPhone Air. On the old device, connect to Wi-Fi and turn on Bluetooth. Unlock it, place it near the new iPhone, and follow the on-screen prompts. Keep both devices close together and connected to power until the migration finishes.
Quick Start occupies both devices, so pick a time when you can leave the old one unused. Apple notes that the duration varies with the amount of data and network conditions; its guidance does not give a fixed completion time. See Apple’s Quick Start instructions.
Choose the transfer that fits your situation

Connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to your Apple Account
Follow the setup prompts to join a Wi-Fi network. Then sign in with the Apple Account you use for Apple services. Using the intended account matters because it connects the phone to the services and account-based content you expect.
After setup, you can check the signed-in account in Settings. Apple’s essential iPhone setup guidance also covers account sign-in, device security, Find My, and iCloud choices.
Set up device security and recovery
Configure Face ID or Touch ID
Set up the biometric option offered by your iPhone during setup, then follow the prompts to enroll. Apple says biometric data is kept on the device and is not stored elsewhere. The available biometric option depends on the model.

Turn on Find My iPhone
Enable Find My iPhone so you can use Apple’s location and recovery features if the device is lost or stolen. Review the related prompts during setup rather than leaving recovery settings unconsidered.

Review the iCloud features presented during setup and enable the ones you want to synchronize or protect information. These choices determine which supported information and services use iCloud; they are not a substitute for deciding how you want to transfer existing data.
Activate cellular service on the iPhone Air
Cellular setup is not identical for every iPhone Air. Apple names iPhone Air in its eSIM guidance, but the available activation path depends on the specific model, carrier, and region. Ask your carrier which method applies to your line before relying on a particular option.

Depending on carrier support, eSIM activation may be offered during iPhone setup through carrier activation or Quick Transfer. Other possible routes include scanning a carrier-provided QR code or using the carrier’s app. Apple explains the options in its guide to setting up cellular service on iPhone.
If you transfer an eSIM number to the new iPhone and activation succeeds, that number stops working on the previous iPhone. Make sure you are ready to move the line before completing the transfer.
Set preferences if you use two cellular lines
If your iPhone has two active lines, label each plan so it is easier to tell them apart. Then choose which number to use by default for calls and messages, and select the line for cellular data. Apple’s Dual SIM with an eSIM guidance explains these choices and notes that an iPhone uses one cellular data network at a time.

Dual-line capabilities and cellular options vary by model, carrier, and region, so the settings you see may differ from another person’s setup.
Finish setup without interrupting the transfer
Once the iPhone Air reaches the Home Screen, check that your chosen transfer or restore is progressing as expected before treating the move as complete. An iCloud download can continue in the background; a direct device transfer, by contrast, must finish before the new phone is ready for use. If an activation option does not appear, confirm the supported eSIM method with your carrier rather than assuming the phone is missing a universal setup step.
