To create a separate FTP login in cPanel, open Files → FTP Accounts, enter a username, select its domain, set a password, choose the directory and quota, then click Create FTP Account. The hosting provider must enable the FTP Accounts interface. After creation, use the exact username shown in cPanel when configuring your FTP client.
Create the FTP account
- Open the account page. Sign in to cPanel and select Files → FTP Accounts.
- Choose a login. In Log In, enter the username you want. Select the appropriate domain from the Domain menu; cPanel combines these details into the account username.
- Set a password. Enter and confirm a password. Some hosting providers require a minimum password strength; use cPanel’s Password Generator if needed.
- Review the directory. The Directory field determines the account’s top-level access. cPanel fills a default path based on
public_html/domain.tld/account. For example, enteringexamplegrants access to/home/$user/example/and its subdirectories. Choose the narrowest directory the user needs. cPanel’s FTP Accounts documentation, updated July 8, 2026, states: “You cannot use symbolic links (symlinks) to upload data outside of this directory.” - Set a quota. Enter a disk-space limit or select Unlimited. If uploads later fail because the account has run out of space, increase its quota if the server supports quotas. Quota controls are unavailable on servers using ProFTPD.
- Create the account. Select Create FTP Account. The account should then appear in the FTP Accounts table.
Connect to the account with an FTP client
In the FTP Accounts table, select Configure FTP Client beside the account to see its manual connection settings or download a configuration file if your host provides one. cPanel lists Core FTP and Cyberduck for automatic configuration. You can also enter the connection details manually:
- Host: Use the server name or address supplied by your hosting provider.
- Username: Copy the exact account username displayed in cPanel. Depending on the account and server setup, it may include the domain, such as
[email protected]. Accounts without a dedicated IP must use the full FTP account username, according to cPanel’s FTP upload instructions. - Password: Enter the password you set for this FTP account.
- Port: Use the port specified by your provider or in cPanel’s client configuration. The default FTP port is 21, though a port may not be required in the client.
If the connection fails, check the hostname, port, password and username format against the cPanel settings. Contact your provider if the details are correct but the FTP service is unavailable.
FTP account or SFTP login?
An FTP account created in cPanel is for FTP; it cannot be used to authenticate over SFTP. SFTP is a separate protocol that transfers files over SSH and uses the cPanel account’s SSH credentials and shell access. See cPanel’s SFTP client instructions for that setup.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
The primary FTP account is different from a separate account you create: cPanel says the primary account can access all files in the cPanel account and advises using SFTP for it. For routine transfers, use a separate FTP account with a deliberately limited directory and confirm the destination before uploading or deleting files.
For FTP over SSL, cPanel says FTP does not support SNI. Use the server hostname rather than the domain name when connecting.

Change a quota, password or account
The FTP Accounts table provides controls to change an account’s password or quota, configure its client, and delete the account. If quota controls are missing, the server may use ProFTPD, which does not support FTP quotas; ask your hosting provider which FTP server daemon is in use.
When deleting an account, distinguish carefully between the two options:

- Delete Account removes the FTP login but leaves its home-directory files.
- Delete Account and Files removes the login and its files. If the account can access
public_html, this may delete that directory and its contents, which can break the website.
If FTP Accounts is missing or FTP is unavailable
Your hosting provider controls whether the FTP Accounts interface is enabled. If you cannot find it, ask the provider whether FTP access or the interface is disabled. The provider can also supply host-specific connection details or confirm whether the server supports quotas. If FTP is unavailable, cPanel suggests using File Manager to manage site files.
