Set your standing desk so your shoulders are relaxed, elbows stay close to your sides, and your wrists remain straight with your forearms while typing. Place the monitor directly in front of you, at least 20 inches away, with its top line at or below eye level. Adjust the work surface, keyboard, mouse, and monitor as a coordinated setup, and vary your posture and tasks rather than relying on one fixed standing schedule. These OSHA recommendations are intended to minimize awkward posture; they do not guarantee that pain or injury will be prevented or treated.
Set the desk height around your arms
Raise or lower the work surface until you can work with relaxed shoulders, elbows close to your body, and forearms and hands free of awkward angles. Aim for hands, wrists, and forearms to be straight, aligned, and roughly parallel to the floor. The right desk height depends on your body and working position, so use your arm posture—not a universal desk-height number—as the practical fit check.
OSHA describes under-desk leg clearance as generally 20–28 inches (50–72 cm) high. Treat that as workstation guidance, not a guarantee that every desk will fit every person. Leave enough room to move your legs and feet comfortably.
Position the keyboard and mouse within easy reach
Keep the keyboard directly in front of you and place the mouse beside it, close enough that you can use it without reaching outward. As you type and use the mouse, keep your wrists straight and in line with your forearms rather than bent up, down, or sideways.

If the desk cannot be adjusted to a suitable keyboard height, an adjustable keyboard tray may help. Choose one with enough room for both the keyboard and mouse and that preserves leg and foot clearance. A tray is a conditional fix, not a substitute for checking the whole workstation.
Place the monitor for a forward, level gaze
Put the monitor directly in front of you, at least 20 inches away, with the top line of the screen at or below eye level. Adjust it for clear viewing without tilting your head up or down. OSHA’s 20-inch figure is a workstation recommendation, not a study statistic or a guarantee of comfort for every user.

A monitor stand or adjustable arm can help if the screen does not reach the intended position. Recheck the keyboard and desk after moving the monitor: screen placement, keyboard height, and your posture interact, so changing one part can affect the others.
Check the setup in both standing and seated positions
If you alternate between standing and sitting, make sure the keyboard and mouse remain at a comfortable height in both modes and that the monitor still supports a forward gaze. A height-adjustable desk is useful when it lets you make those adjustments. When desk or chair adjustment cannot provide a suitable keyboard height, consider a tray only if it leaves adequate clearance.

During seated periods, your feet should be supported. If they do not reach the floor and the desk height cannot be adjusted, OSHA identifies a footrest as an option.
Vary posture and tasks instead of following a fixed timer
OSHA recommends having the opportunity to alternate sitting and standing, vary keyboard work with other activities, or take micro-breaks and recovery pauses. Its guidance does not prescribe one universal sit/stand timing schedule. Use position changes and pauses to avoid staying in one posture continuously, and choose a pattern that works with your tasks and workstation.

Use wrist and palm supports cautiously
First adjust the desk, keyboard, and mouse so your wrists can stay neutral. A wrist or palm support is optional; if you use one, your hands should move freely above it while typing, and the support should contact the heel of your palm when you are resting. OSHA cautions that leaning on a support while typing may inhibit wrist movement or contribute to awkward posture.

- Maintain enough leg and foot clearance under the desk.
- Adjust the arrangement for both standing and seated work, if you switch between them.
OSHA recommends height-adjustable desks as a workstation option, but its guidance does not endorse a particular brand or model. It also describes workstation recommendations rather than individualized clinical advice. OSHA states, “A properly adjusted workstation can help minimize awkward postures.”
