To set up an Apple home hub, configure a HomePod mini or HomePod, which becomes a hub automatically, or add an Apple TV to a room in the Home app. Then use the Home app on an updated iPhone or iPad to pair compatible HomeKit or Matter accessories. A hub enables remote control, sharing, and automations; Thread support depends on the exact hub model.
Choose and set up an Apple home hub
Apple describes a home hub as the device that lets you control accessories while away, share access, and run automations. The hub must be at home, connected to the home Wi-Fi network, and powered on. [Apple’s home hub setup guide]

| Device | How it becomes a hub | Thread support |
|---|---|---|
| HomePod mini or HomePod | Set up the speaker; it automatically becomes a home hub. Only the home owner can add it as a hub. | Apple lists HomePod mini as a Thread-enabled hub. |
| Apple TV | On Apple TV, open Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home, select Room, then choose or add a room. Adding it to a room in Home makes it a hub. | Apple lists Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled. Do not assume every Apple TV 4K configuration supports Thread. |
If choosing between them, consider whether you want a speaker or streaming device, whether your accessories use Thread, and which device you can keep powered on and connected at home. Check the exact model and regional availability before buying.

What you need before pairing an accessory
- An updated iPhone or iPad with Bluetooth turned on. Apple says accessories cannot be added to Home from a Mac.
- A compatible HomeKit, Apple Home, or Matter accessory, powered on and nearby. Check the manual for required bridges, firmware updates, or manufacturer-app setup.
- The accessory’s QR code or Apple Home setup code. An Apple Home code may be printed on the device, packaging, or documentation; Matter codes can be 11 or 21 digits.
- Permission to add accessories. If the Add Accessory option is missing, the home owner may need to grant a resident Add and Edit Accessories permission.
Apple’s current Matter support list includes air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, outlets, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, and motion, ambient-light, contact, temperature, and humidity sensors. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for an individual product’s features and protocol requirements. [Apple’s Matter accessory guidance]
Add a HomeKit or Matter accessory in the Home app
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Home and tap Add > Add Accessory.
- Scan the accessory’s QR code or enter its setup code, then follow the onscreen prompts. If it is a Matter accessory already paired with another app, tap More Options to find it; the other app may provide the pairing code.
- Allow network access if asked. Choose a room and give the accessory a clear name, then finish setup. The name can also be used to control it with Siri.
For Apple’s illustrated steps and current prompts, see the iPhone Home accessory setup guide and Apple’s Add Accessory instructions.

Do you need a hub for Matter or Thread?
Apple says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories in Home without a hub, although Apple recommends a home hub for the best experience. Thread accessories have a separate requirement: hub operation requires a Thread-enabled home hub, such as a HomePod mini or the specified Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration. Some Thread-capable iPhone models can pair and manage Thread accessories locally, potentially after an accessory firmware update; that local capability is not the same as having a hub for remote control and automations. [Apple Matter requirements]
Matter accessories paired with Home sync through iCloud Keychain across devices and apps that support Matter. Apple says the pairing keys stored there are end-to-end encrypted.

Troubleshoot pairing and “No Response” problems
If an accessory will not add
- Confirm it has power, is close to the router, and is supported by Home. Turn on Bluetooth and install available software updates.
- Check the manual for a required bridge or manufacturer-app step. If the accessory belongs to another home, reset it only as directed by its manufacturer.
- If Home reports an incompatible network, check whether the accessory requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; some accessories do not work with 5 GHz networks.
- For Matter errors, check whether the required hub is configured and try the Apple Account used to set up the home.
- Review access permissions if Add Accessory is unavailable.
Apple’s full checklist is in its guide to accessories that cannot be added.
If one manufacturer’s accessories show “No Response”
Check Bluetooth, restart the accessory, and check its manufacturer app for firmware status. Restart any bridges and hubs. If the accessory still does not respond, consider removing, resetting, and adding it again. For a third-party Thread accessory, Apple advises disconnecting its power for five minutes, reconnecting it, and then waiting ten minutes for the Thread network to stabilize.

- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
If accessories from several manufacturers show “No Response”
Check that devices and hubs have current software and are on the same Wi-Fi network. Restart the router and hubs, and check whether a VPN or third-party security software is interfering. Follow Apple’s steps in its troubleshooting guide for unresponsive HomeKit and Matter accessories.
