To watch local broadcast TV for free, connect an over-the-air antenna to your TV, select its antenna or air tuner mode, and run a channel scan. Which stations you can receive depends on your exact location, the antenna’s placement, and whether it supports the stations’ actual broadcast frequencies.
1. Check which stations may reach your home
Start with the FCC DTV Reception Map. Enter your location to see predicted digital TV signals in the area. The map assumes a traditional outdoor antenna 30 feet above ground; the FCC cautions that terrain, buildings, trees, weather, and receiving equipment affect actual results. Reception can be significantly lower in very hilly areas, so use the map to guide your choice, not as a guarantee for your home.
Make a list of the stations you want, then check their actual broadcast channels. A station’s number in a TV guide may be a virtual channel number, not its broadcast frequency. Stations in the same market can use different bands, so check each station’s information using the FCC map and choose an antenna that supports the needed VHF and/or UHF bands.
2. Choose an antenna placement
Reception depends on the signal path between the broadcast station and your antenna. A high position with fewer obstructions is a sensible starting point. For an indoor antenna, try a high spot near a window or an exterior wall facing the stations. Hills, trees, nearby buildings, and some construction materials can weaken signals.

If indoor placement does not work well, an attic or outdoor location may offer a clearer path, though results vary by home. The FCC’s consumer guidance puts it plainly: “The location of an indoor antenna is key.” It also recommends trying a different direction and moving an indoor antenna away from other electronic equipment. See the FCC antenna and digital television guidance.
3. Connect the antenna and scan for channels
- Connect the coaxial cable. Run the antenna’s coax lead to the TV’s antenna or RF input. For the first setup, connect the antenna directly to one TV.
- Select the over-the-air tuner. In the TV’s settings, choose “Antenna,” “Air,” or “Broadcast,” not “Cable.” Menu names vary by model.
- Run a channel scan. Choose “Channel Scan,” “Auto Scan,” “Auto Program,” or the equivalent option. Consult the TV manual if you cannot find the setting. The scan identifies receivable channels; it is not a live signal-strength test.
- Check the results. Tune to the stations you want and see whether their picture and sound remain stable.
Some older TVs do not have a digital tuner, and some sets may lack the appropriate antenna connector. Check your TV’s specifications: a compatible external digital converter or tuner is needed only if the set cannot tune over-the-air digital broadcasts itself.

4. Improve reception when channels are missing or unstable
Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it helped. After moving or rotating the antenna, run another scan; the TV may not add newly receivable stations until you do.
- No channels found: Confirm the TV is set to antenna, air, or broadcast mode; check that the coax is secure at both ends; then scan again. If the TV lacks a digital tuner, check whether it needs a compatible converter.
- Some stations are missing: Verify the stations’ actual VHF/UHF broadcast bands and that your antenna supports them. Try a higher placement or a different direction, then rescan.
- The picture breaks up or disappears: Check the cable connections and look for obstacles that may block the signal. Try another position and rescan after each move.
Start with a direct antenna-to-TV connection. An amplifier is not an automatic fix: whether it helps depends on the installation. If you are considering one, first check the direct connection, cable length, and any splitters. Antennas Direct’s FAQ and setup guide describe practical setup and troubleshooting, but manufacturer advice is not independent performance testing.

5. Add another TV only after confirming reception
For more than one TV, a splitter and extra coax may be required to distribute the antenna signal. First confirm reception with one TV connected directly to the antenna. If channels are already weak or unreliable at that TV, adding a splitter may complicate troubleshooting; establish a working setup before distributing the signal.

Over-the-air broadcasts do not require an internet connection or monthly pay-TV subscription. The channels available to you depend on which stations your antenna can receive at your location. You may need coaxial cable or other equipment depending on your home and TV, but an antenna cannot guarantee a particular channel lineup or reception quality.
