To avoid routing game traffic through a VPN, exclude the game in your VPN app’s per-app or split-tunneling settings. If the game must use the VPN, compare its connection with the VPN on and off: VPN routing can add latency, and there is no universal setting that guarantees the same ping. Excluding the game also means its traffic is not protected by that VPN.
Choose whether the game needs VPN protection
A VPN protects traffic routed through its tunnel, but that extra routing can increase latency, reduce internet speed, and affect battery life. Google’s Pixel guidance specifically suggests excluding a multiplayer game if VPN latency affects gameplay. The trade-off is straightforward: tunneled game traffic gets VPN protection; excluded game traffic bypasses that VPN.
- Prioritize responsiveness: If the game does not need VPN protection, exclude only that game and leave other apps routed through the VPN.
- Keep the game protected: Leave it in the VPN tunnel, then compare its connection with and without the VPN rather than assuming the VPN will improve ping.
Google does not provide a universal millisecond penalty for Android gaming. Your result depends on the network route, VPN server, and game endpoint; proximity alone does not guarantee a faster route.
Exclude a game from VPN by Google on a supported Pixel
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network and Internet > VPN > VPN by Google.
- Tap Exclude selected apps.
- Add the multiplayer game you want to bypass the VPN.
Once excluded, that app’s traffic is no longer protected by VPN by Google. The service is not available on every device, account, or region; check Google’s current Pixel VPN guidance for eligibility and details.

Exclude a game in a third-party VPN app
Look in the VPN app for a feature named Split tunneling, App filters, or Per App Settings. The exact wording and behavior differ by provider, and some apps may not offer app-level routing.
- Open your VPN app and find its per-app routing controls.
- Choose whether the game should use the VPN or bypass it. Check the app’s labels carefully: some providers tunnel selected apps by default, while others let you select apps to exclude.
- Save the setting, connect the VPN, and check the game’s connection status or in-game latency.
For example, Private Internet Access documents the path menu > Per App Settings in its Android setup guide. Its guide also documents server selection and WireGuard or OpenVPN options; those controls do not establish that a particular server or protocol will lower your game’s ping.

Connect a saved VPN profile in Android settings
If you have a VPN profile configured in Android, Google documents these controls in Settings > Network & internet > VPN. Select the profile to connect, or open its settings to edit, disconnect, or forget it. Menu names and locations may vary by manufacturer and Android version. Decide whether to use always-on VPN
Always-on VPN is for keeping a VPN connection persistent, not for reducing game latency. Android’s developer documentation says the feature is available on Android 7.0 (API 24) or later. Google notes that a VPN set up through an app may not expose the always-on option in Android settings.

- Always-on VPN: Can start the VPN service when the device boots and keep it running.
- Block connections without VPN: Prevents network traffic that does not use the VPN. If the VPN disconnects, apps may lose network access instead of falling back to a direct connection.
Before enabling the block option, decide whether losing connectivity during a VPN interruption is acceptable. Read Android’s VPN documentation for the platform behavior.

- Stay on the same Wi-Fi or mobile network and note the game’s in-game latency or connection-quality indicator with the VPN connected.
- Disconnect the VPN and check the same indicator again.
- If your VPN supports per-app routing, reconnect it with the game excluded and compare once more.
- Keep the setup that suits your needs: exclude the game if the direct connection is more responsive and VPN protection is not required for it, or keep it tunneled if protection matters more.
For a game that must stay in the VPN, you can compare the provider’s available server locations and protocol options. Treat those as variables to test, not guaranteed fixes: the available documentation does not establish a universally best server location or protocol for gaming.
