1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo set up an Amazon Echo, install or update the Alexa app, plug in the speaker, then use Devices to add an Amazon Echo and follow the prompts to connect it to Wi-Fi and register it. Have access to the Amazon account you want to use and your Wi-Fi name and password. Screens and steps can vary by Echo model, so follow the model-specific instructions if the app or device behaves differently.
Before you begin
- Install the Alexa app on a phone or other internet-connected mobile device, or update it if you already have it.
- Make sure you can sign in to the Amazon account you want associated with the Echo.
- Have your home Wi-Fi network name and password ready.
- Identify your Echo model if you are unsure. Amazon provides a model identification guide and separate setup instructions for models including Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop, and Echo Studio.
Set up the Echo in the Alexa app
- Plug in the Echo speaker and wait for it to start.
- Open the Alexa app and sign in to the Amazon account you want to use.
- Tap Devices, select the add-device control, choose Add Device, then choose Amazon Echo.
- Select the appropriate Echo category or model when prompted, then follow the instructions shown in the app.
- Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter its password when asked. Continue through the prompts to complete registration.
- Let the setup finish, including any software update or completion step shown in the app. Avoid unplugging the Echo while it is updating.
Amazon’s general setup guidance directs owners to use the Alexa app to set up or register an Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Dot with clock, or Echo Dot Kids. Exact app labels can vary by app version and model. For screen, button, or indicator details, use Amazon’s setup page for your Echo model.
How to tell whether setup worked
When the app finishes setup, the Echo should appear among your devices in the app and be connected to your home Wi-Fi. Try a simple voice request. If it does not respond, work through the checks below before resetting it.
If the Alexa app does not find or set up the Echo
- Confirm the Alexa app is up to date and that your phone has internet access.
- In the app, open Devices and try adding the Echo manually through Add Device > Amazon Echo.
- Restart the Echo: unplug it, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in and retry setup.
- If setup still fails, follow Amazon’s setup troubleshooting steps. Amazon includes using a phone hotspot as a diagnostic option.
- Reset the Echo only after the ordinary troubleshooting steps have not worked. Use the reset instructions for the exact model, since button combinations and procedures vary.
If the Echo cannot connect to Wi-Fi
- Check that the router is working by confirming another device can connect to the internet.
- Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully and confirm you selected the intended network.
- Move the Echo closer to the router during setup. Amazon recommends keeping it within 30 feet (10 meters) while troubleshooting Wi-Fi.
- Move it away from nearby electronics that could interfere with the signal.
- If your router lists separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, try connecting to the other band.
Amazon’s Wi-Fi guidance says Echo devices support common home networks using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz and 802.11a/b/g/n. They cannot connect to ad-hoc, peer-to-peer networks. See Amazon’s instructions for Echo Wi-Fi troubleshooting and updating Wi-Fi settings for model-specific help.

Decide whether the problem is the Echo or the home network
If other devices also cannot get online, the issue may be with the router or internet service rather than the Echo. If those devices work and the Echo still will not connect after checking the password, distance, and network band, continue with Amazon’s setup-specific troubleshooting before resetting the speaker.
