To set up Agent Infra’s MCP Browser Server locally, install Node.js 18 or newer, then add @agent-infra/mcp-server-browser@latest as an MCP server in your client. The simplest configuration uses npx over standard input/output (stdio); you do not need to expose a network port. Below are working configuration examples, the options that matter, and how to avoid a malformed remote endpoint.

What Agent Infra’s MCP Browser Server does

@agent-infra/mcp-server-browser on npm is a browser-automation MCP server built around Puppeteer. Its README describes its default interaction approach as using structured accessibility data, with optional vision support for complex visual layouts. It presents the server as usable with local or remote browsers and configurable to use different browser engines.

That distinction is practical: structured page information is the normal route for interacting with page elements, while vision is an option when a layout or visual detail is difficult to handle through that route. The README does not establish that one mode is faster or more accurate in general.

The listed tools cover tasks such as navigation, clicking, filling forms, evaluating page JavaScript, taking screenshots, managing tabs, and closing the browser. The package listing provides only a partial tool table, so treat that as examples rather than a complete tool inventory.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 18 or newer. The package listing names this as the runtime requirement.
  • An MCP-compatible client. The README gives VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, and Claude Desktop as examples. Other clients may work if they support the relevant MCP transport and configuration.
  • Network access to npm for the initial launch. With the examples below, npx retrieves and starts the package. If your environment cannot reach npm, arrange an approved package installation and execution method before configuring the client.

Client menus and configuration formats can change. If a label differs in your installed client version, use that client’s current MCP server setup instructions while preserving the package command and arguments shown here.

Set up a local server over stdio

For a local setup, configure the MCP client to launch the server with npx. This keeps the server process attached to the client instead of making it a network service.

Generic MCP configuration

Add this server entry to the MCP configuration file used by your client. Merge it into an existing mcpServers object if one is already present; do not replace other server entries.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "browser": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["@agent-infra/mcp-server-browser@latest"]
    }
  }
}

Save the file and restart the client or reload its MCP servers. The client should start the command when it connects to the server. If it reports that the server failed to start, check the runtime and launch troubleshooting section below.

code --add-mcp '{"name":"browser","command":"npx","args":["@agent-infra/mcp-server-browser@latest"]}'

Alternatively, add the generic mcpServers configuration using the MCP configuration mechanism available in your VS Code version. The CLI command and JSON shape are package README examples; VS Code’s MCP UI and behavior may change between releases.

Cursor

  1. Open Cursor Settings → MCP.
  2. Select Add new MCP Server.
  3. Configure a command-type server using npx @agent-infra/mcp-server-browser, or use the JSON configuration shown above.
  4. Save the server and check the MCP server status in Cursor.

The README’s Cursor command example omits @latest; using the generic configuration above pins the request to the npm latest tag at launch time. That tag can move to a newer release over time.

Claude Desktop and Windsurf

For Claude Desktop, the README shows the same mcpServers configuration structure. Add the browser entry to the MCP configuration Claude Desktop uses, save it, and restart the client so it can launch the server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Windsurf, the package README directs users to the client’s MCP documentation rather than providing a full Windsurf-specific procedure. Use the generic command and arguments above with the configuration format supported by your installed Windsurf version.

Run the server remotely only when you need a network endpoint

The README documents starting the server with a port, for example --port 8089, and describes Streamable HTTP at /mcp and Server-Sent Events (SSE) at /sse. It calls Streamable HTTP the recommended transport. However, the endpoint examples in that README contain a likely typo: they show http://127.0.0.1::8089/mcp and http://127.0.0.1::8089/sse, with two colons before the port. Those are malformed URLs, and the intended address has not been established here. Do not copy them as working client endpoints; check the package’s current release documentation or repository for the correct syntax before configuring remote access.

A remote server also changes the operational boundary: a client connects over HTTP rather than starting the process through stdio. Before exposing a browser-control service beyond a local development environment, determine what network access controls and protections your deployment requires. The package information cited here does not establish a particular authentication or deployment-security configuration.

Virtual displays

For a VNC or virtual-display environment, the README illustrates starting the process with DISPLAY=:0. That is an environment-specific example, not a requirement for ordinary local headless use:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISPLAY=:0 npx @agent-infra/mcp-server-browser@latest --port 8089

This starts the package with the documented port argument and display variable; it does not resolve the malformed endpoint examples, so verify the correct client URL independently before connecting.

In-memory use from JavaScript or TypeScript

The README also describes embedding the server for JavaScript or TypeScript clients using the Model Context Protocol SDK and InMemoryTransport. This approach connects components in one process and can avoid requiring end users to install the CLI. Follow the package’s current SDK example for the exact imports and server construction; the package listing summarized here does not provide enough detail to reproduce a complete in-memory program safely.

Choose browser and runtime options deliberately

The package README lists command-line options for browser selection and runtime behavior. Use only the options your environment needs; the exact accepted syntax and defaults should be checked against the package’s current README or CLI help for the installed release.

Network routing Proxy server and proxy bypass settings When browser traffic must use a proxy or particular hosts should bypass it.
Browser identity and output User agent, output directory When a site behaves differently by user agent or generated output needs a known location.

The README also describes runtime HTTP headers for viewport size (x-viewport-size), vision coordinate factors (x-vision-factors), and user agent (x-user-agent); header names are case-insensitive. These are relevant to HTTP-based operation, not a substitute for the stdio JSON configuration. Consult the current package documentation for precise argument syntax and accepted value formats rather than guessing them.

What to expect from browser access and screenshots

The listed browser tools support automation actions such as navigating, clicking, filling forms, and evaluating page JavaScript; the README also lists screenshots among the tools and resources. The package listing’s partial tool table does not establish every tool name, parameter, output format, or screenshot option, so inspect the live package documentation for the specific operation you plan to automate.

If your goal is simply to retrieve a page screenshot rather than give an AI agent interactive browser control, an HTTP screenshot API can be a narrower alternative. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media; this is distinct from Agent Infra’s browser automation server. ScreenshotNeo’s API accepts a URL in one GET request and can return an image or PDF. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for MCP clients such as Claude and Cursor.

Or skip the browser setup

If all you need is a rendered page capture, ScreenshotNeo’s API can return the shot without configuring a local browser process. Create an API key and replace YOUR_API_KEY with it:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters. The API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Troubleshooting

The client says the server command cannot be found

  • Confirm Node.js 18 or newer is installed.
  • Run node --version and npx --version in the same environment that launches the client.
  • If the client is launched as a desktop app, it may not inherit the shell’s PATH. Configure the full path to npx as the command if necessary, preserving the package argument.

The server does not appear after editing configuration

  • Check that the JSON parses and that the new entry is nested inside mcpServers.
  • Merge the entry with existing servers instead of creating a second conflicting top-level key.
  • Restart the client or reload MCP servers; a saved file is not necessarily reloaded automatically.
  • Check the client’s MCP or server logs for launch errors.

The package does not download or start

  • Verify the machine can reach npm and that any proxy or firewall permits the request.
  • Check the package name and argument spelling: @agent-infra/mcp-server-browser@latest.
  • If reproducibility matters, choose and document a specific package version rather than relying on a moving @latest tag; confirm the intended version on the npm listing.

A remote client cannot connect

  • Do not use the README’s double-colon endpoint examples as written; verify the current correct endpoint format in package documentation.
  • Confirm the server is listening on the configured port and that the client uses the same transport path, such as /mcp for Streamable HTTP or /sse for SSE, once the URL is verified.
  • Check host binding, firewall rules, and whether the client supports the transport selected.

The page is not visible or appears at the wrong size

  • For a virtual display, verify the display environment; the README’s example uses DISPLAY=:0.
  • Set the viewport using the supported CLI option or, for HTTP runtime configuration, the documented x-viewport-size header.
  • If the task depends on visual layout details that structured page information does not handle well, consider enabling the optional vision mode and consult the documentation for its coordinate settings.

Security note for existing browser sessions

Chrome DevTools MCP is a separate project, not a prerequisite or component of Agent Infra’s package. Chrome’s setup documentation warns that connecting an agent to an existing Chrome session can expose that session’s logged-in accounts, cookies, and other data. Apply that warning when configuring Chrome DevTools MCP with a live profile; do not assume it describes Agent Infra’s default browser setup. Only connect an agent to a browser session whose data you are prepared to expose to it.

Frequently Asked Questions
