Choose a place animals already use, get permission, mount the camera securely, test its frame and trigger, and leave with as little disturbance as possible. An infrared camera can reduce visible flash, but no setup guarantees that wildlife will not notice it. Check land-access rules, protected-species requirements, and privacy obligations before deployment.

Plan what you want to observe

Decide whether you want to learn which species use a trail, record activity at a habitat edge, or observe a particular behavior. Pointing a camera at a trail, burrow, water source, or other location samples different activity. Choose a useful existing feature and avoid altering habitat unnecessarily. The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) offers practical guidance in its camera-trapping publication.

Get permission and check local rules

Ask the landowner or land manager for permission, and confirm that cameras are allowed on the property or in the protected area. Avoid framing private spaces or busy paths. If people could appear in images, follow local requirements for notice, access, retention, and deletion. The Swiss federal regulator’s guidance on private video surveillance applies to Switzerland; it is not a statement of law elsewhere.

Rules for protected wildlife also depend on location. In England, Natural England’s guidance says a licence is not needed to survey, film, or photograph protected birds or animals if they are not disturbed. It advises careful planning, including installing cameras when animals are away from nests or resting places where relevant; a licence may be needed if disturbance cannot be avoided. Check the current requirements for the jurisdiction where you plan to set up.

Choose a location, height, and angle

Attach the camera securely to a stable tree or post, facing a trail or open area animals already use. Height and angle depend on the target species and terrain, so treat published measurements as starting points rather than universal rules.

  • General starting point: UF/IFAS suggests about 20 inches (50 cm) above ground for a diverse group of North American species, with clear space ahead of the camera.
  • Missouri examples: The Missouri Department of Conservation suggests belly-button height as a starting point for its local context and chest height when seeking elk. For a narrow trail, it suggests placing the camera about 10 feet away and aiming across the trail at roughly a 45-degree angle, giving a passing animal more time in the detection area.

These examples differ because the best framing depends on the animal you hope to capture. See the Missouri Department of Conservation’s trail-camera tips alongside UF/IFAS guidance when choosing a setup.

Secure the camera and prevent false triggers

A solid mount helps keep the frame steady. Aim carefully, then clear only vegetation that moves in the field of view and is likely to trigger the camera. Avoid cutting or trampling more habitat than needed, and avoid direct sun glare where possible; the Missouri Department of Conservation cautions that southerly orientations can create glare.

UF/IFAS recommends leaving 4–5 feet of clear space in front of a standard setup. That helps maintain an unobstructed view and reduces the chance that nearby objects will reflect flash at night. If wind-moved vegetation produces unwanted images, lowering sensitivity may help; higher sensitivity may reduce missed wildlife. Settings vary by camera, so test the trigger rather than assuming a setting will work in every location.

Reduce visible light and other disturbance

If limiting visible disturbance is a priority, choose infrared rather than a visible white flash. UF/IFAS recommends infrared flashes “to avoid altering animal behavior as much as possible.” Low-glow and no-glow infrared options are intended to reduce visible light further, but “no-glow” does not mean silent, undetectable, or disturbance-free. The World Wildlife Fund’s camera-trap guidance also advises minimizing scent and disturbance to vegetation.

Reduce unnecessary visits and avoid leaving scent where practical. Around birds, Audubon advises against direct flash and cautions against supplying bait or lure to attract them. Setting up near an existing food cache is different from adding food to lure an animal. Follow Audubon’s guidance for using cameras around birds.

Test the frame before leaving

  1. Check the view: Take a preview image and confirm that it covers the intended trail or area without pointing toward private spaces or busy paths.
  2. Check stability: Make sure the mount is secure and the camera is aimed where you intend.
  3. Check triggering: Walk through the detection area, or use an equivalent test for the camera, to confirm it records movement in the intended part of the frame.
  4. Record the setup: Note the location, date, settings, and intended check or retrieval date. Retrieve the equipment when the project ends.

Regular maintenance may be useful, but there is no single inspection interval established for every camera, site, or project. Plan checks around local rules, the equipment, and the sensitivity of the location.
