Connect the modem’s Ethernet port to the TP-Link router’s WAN/Internet port, then run the setup wizard in TP-Link Tether or a browser. Before you begin, confirm your ISP’s connection type and whether it requires PPPoE credentials or a VLAN ID; those settings vary by provider and account.

Before you connect the router

Have an Ethernet cable ready and check with your ISP for the Internet connection type and any required login or VLAN details. Do not guess: the router’s automatic detection may help, but your ISP’s requirements are the reference.

  • Dynamic IP: Common for cable Internet and generally does not require a username or password.
  • PPPoE: Requires the username and password provided by your ISP.
  • Static IP: Uses fixed network details supplied by your ISP.
  • VLAN ID: Some ISPs require one. Ask for the exact value and where it applies.

Connect the modem and router

  1. Turn off the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove it while powering down, as TP-Link’s classic setup procedure advises.
  2. Connect an Ethernet cable from the modem’s Ethernet port to the TP-Link router’s WAN or Internet port. Follow the labels on your model; newer hardware may have more than one Internet port.
  3. Power the modem back on and wait about two minutes for it to restart, following TP-Link’s recommendation. Then turn on the router.

Open the TP-Link setup wizard

Choose either the Tether app or a web browser. TP-Link offers newer and classic setup flows, and the screens can differ by router model and firmware; follow the options shown on your device.

Set up with Tether

  1. Connect your phone to the router’s default Wi-Fi network. The network name (SSID) and password are printed on the product label.
  2. Open TP-Link Tether and select the router when it appears.
  3. Create or enter the router’s local login password, then follow the setup prompts.

Set up in a browser

  1. Connect a phone or computer to the TP-Link router, using Wi-Fi or a wired connection if available.
  2. Open a browser and type tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1 in the address bar.
  3. Create or enter the router’s local login password and proceed through the wizard.

You can open the router’s local setup page even before its Internet connection is configured.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Choose the Internet settings

  1. Let the wizard detect the connection type, then compare the result with what your ISP told you. Correct it if needed.
  2. If the ISP uses PPPoE, enter the ISP-provided username and password. For a static IP connection, use the fixed details the ISP supplied. If the connection is Dynamic IP, it generally needs no login.
  3. If your ISP requires a VLAN ID, enter that exact value in the IPTV/VLAN or Special ISP Settings area, depending on the interface. TP-Link’s new-interface guide says, “If your ISP doesn’t require a VLAN ID, click Next.” Do not change unrelated settings without a reason.

Name and secure your Wi-Fi network

In the wizard, choose a Wi-Fi network name and password, then review the setup summary and finish or apply the settings. A strong password helps protect access to your home network.

On supported models, Smart Connect can use one network name for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Some routers also expose additional bands or separate band settings, so available choices depend on the model.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

If another router is already in the connection

If the existing device is a modem/router combo, or another router sits between the modem and the TP-Link, the TP-Link may create Double NAT. That arrangement can affect services such as gaming, VPNs, or remote access.

The right fix depends on which device should manage the home network. You can remove the upstream router from the path or, if you want the upstream device to remain the router, put the TP-Link into Access Point mode. TP-Link identifies Access Point mode as an option; choose the arrangement that matches your network rather than changing modes by default.

Troubleshoot a router with no Internet

Check the physical connection and modem service

  • Make sure the cable runs from the modem’s Ethernet port to the TP-Link WAN/Internet port.
  • If the router’s Internet IP address is 0.0.0.0, TP-Link says it has not received a valid address from the modem.
  • Test the modem directly with a computer. If the computer also has no Internet after the modem restarts, contact your ISP.

Verify the ISP settings

If the modem works directly, check that the router is set to the ISP’s connection type and that any required PPPoE credentials or VLAN ID are correct.

Try later-stage network checks

If the basic checks do not resolve the issue, TP-Link documents additional possibilities such as cloning a device’s MAC address when an ISP binds service to a particular device, or changing the router’s LAN address if the modem and router use conflicting IP ranges. These are troubleshooting measures, not routine setup steps; change them only when the situation calls for it, and follow TP-Link’s instructions for the router model.
