Continue to use HTTPS and verify the destination; a VPN does not replace those precautions.
Before you travel: update Windows and your ThinkPad
- Install Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart if prompted.
- Check Lenovo updates for your exact model. Identify the ThinkPad’s machine type and wireless adapter, then use Lenovo’s support page for that model to check for WLAN driver updates. Security advisories can name affected adapters and fixed driver versions, so do not assume one driver applies to every ThinkPad. Lenovo’s Qualcomm WLAN security advisory directs users to install the version listed for their product or a newer one.
These menu paths target Windows 11. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; a device still running Windows 10 should not be assumed to receive ordinary free security updates after that date.
Join the venue’s intended Wi-Fi network
In Windows 11, select the network icon in the taskbar, open the Wi-Fi list, choose the SSID the venue provides, and connect. Enter the network password if required. Lenovo documents this sequence in its Windows 11 wireless connection guide.
A password does not make a hotspot equivalent to a trusted private network. Lenovo’s 2017 WPA2 advisory offers the useful general caution that you may not know whether the access point and client are patched. Confirm the SSID with venue staff or posted instructions, and avoid a similarly named network chosen only because its signal is stronger.

Set the Wi-Fi profile to Public
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi.
- Select the connected network to open its properties.
- Under Network profile type, select Public network (Recommended).
Windows 11 uses Public by default for first-time connections. Microsoft says the Public profile hides your PC from other devices on the network and prevents ordinary file and printer sharing. A Private profile makes the PC discoverable and supports sharing, so reserve it for networks and devices you trust. See Microsoft’s essential network settings guide.
Keep Microsoft Defender Firewall enabled
- Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection.
- Check the active network profile and confirm Microsoft Defender Firewall is on.
The firewall filters network traffic and blocks unauthorized access. If it blocks a business app you need, ask IT for help or a supported exception; Microsoft recommends allowing a specific app rather than turning the firewall off. On an organization-managed ThinkPad, policy may control the setting. Do not work around that policy by disabling protection. See Microsoft’s Firewall and network protection guide.

Connect to your work VPN before opening work resources
Use the VPN profile or application supplied by your employer and follow its authentication requirements. If you do not have the profile or are unsure which one to use, get it from your company intranet or IT support. In Windows, a configured connection is available under Settings > Network & internet > VPN; select the company connection and choose Connect, if your organization’s setup uses Windows’ built-in VPN interface.
Verify that the VPN shows as connected before opening internal work resources. Microsoft explains how to connect to a VPN in Windows, and Lenovo recommends VPN use on public or unknown Wi-Fi. A VPN is one layer: keep the PC patched, use HTTPS for websites, use secure protocols such as SSH for remote shell work, and do not ignore certificate or endpoint warnings.

Use Lenovo Wi-Fi features only if your model has them
Some ThinkPads may offer supplemental Wi-Fi protections through Lenovo Vantage or Smart Modes. Lenovo’s Wi-Fi Security in Lenovo Vantage documentation describes a feature intended to help avoid malicious wireless networks. Its Smart Modes documentation describes optional VPN auto-prompts and Wi-Fi fencing that can mark networks safe or unsafe.
Availability and settings vary by model. Check the Vantage installation and support page for your ThinkPad rather than assuming these controls are present. They supplement, rather than replace, the Windows Public profile, firewall, and employer VPN.

Quick check before accessing sensitive work
- The connected SSID matches the one supplied by the venue.
- The network profile is Public and the firewall is enabled.
- Your employer-approved VPN shows as connected before you open internal resources.
- Websites use HTTPS; remote shell connections use a secure protocol such as SSH. Treat certificate, identity, or endpoint warnings as a reason to stop and verify, not click through.
- If work software cannot connect, ask IT for supported troubleshooting or a narrow exception instead of switching the hotspot to Private or disabling the firewall.
What the security guidance does—and does not—establish
Lenovo’s WPA2 advisory dates to 2017 and discusses vulnerabilities known at that time. Its guidance to treat Wi-Fi of unknown patch status cautiously remains useful as a general principle, but it is not a current vulnerability notice for every ThinkPad. For current driver exposure, match Lenovo’s security advisories to the exact model and wireless adapter, then check the model’s support listing for the applicable driver.
The Windows instructions above are for Windows 11. The reviewed Microsoft and Lenovo guidance does not establish a separate secure setup for every ThinkPad model or Windows configuration; model-specific drivers and optional Lenovo features need to be checked against the individual device.
