To set up a smart thermostat, first confirm that the exact model supports your heating and cooling system and its wiring. Then follow that model’s installation guide to safely replace the old thermostat, connect the device to its app and Wi-Fi, and test that heating and cooling work. If the wiring or equipment is unfamiliar, stop and get help from an HVAC professional or electrician.

Before you start: check thermostat compatibility

Identify your heating and cooling equipment before buying or wiring a thermostat. Note whether you have forced-air heating or cooling, a boiler or furnace, a heat pump, baseboard or in-wall heating, multiple stages, zones, or variable-speed equipment. Compare those details with the compatibility checker and installation guide for the exact thermostat model.

ENERGY STAR says many smart thermostats work with common forced-air systems, including many installed after 1975. Some oil systems may need an adapter, while variable-speed, multistage, or zoned equipment may call for professional installation. Many models do not support baseboard heating, biofuels, or in-wall heaters. These are general compatibility pointers, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s model-specific requirements. ENERGY STAR smart thermostat guidance

  • Common forced-air, single-speed system: Check the model’s compatibility tool and terminal requirements.
  • Boiler, oil system, heat pump, or dual-fuel setup: Confirm exact support with the manufacturer; ask a professional if the configuration is unclear.
  • Variable-speed, multistage, or zoned system: Check whether professional installation is recommended or required.
  • Baseboard, in-wall heater, or thick line-voltage wires: Do not assume a typical low-voltage smart thermostat is compatible. Verify the equipment type and product instructions before proceeding.

Do you need a C-wire?

Not always. Many smart thermostats use a C-wire (common wire) for continuous power, but a missing C-wire does not automatically rule out a smart thermostat. It can limit your choices or mean you need a compatible adapter or another power option supported by the manufacturer. Check the exact thermostat’s instructions and confirm that its proposed power solution works with your HVAC system. ENERGY STAR makes the same distinction in its smart thermostat guidance.

How to install the thermostat

Thermostat terminals and wiring arrangements vary by model and HVAC system. Use the wiring diagram for your specific thermostat; do not rely on wire color alone or assume a generic diagram applies to a heat pump, dual-fuel system, or multistage furnace.

  1. Read the installation guide and identify the power shutoff. Follow the thermostat and HVAC equipment instructions for shutting off power before handling thermostat wires. The general ENERGY STAR guidance does not provide a complete shutdown procedure, so use the instructions for your equipment.
  2. Document the existing wiring. Remove the old thermostat cover as directed. Photograph the wires and their terminal labels, or label each wire by the terminal it occupies. Terminal labels are more useful than colors when transferring connections.
  3. Stop if the wiring is unfamiliar or hazardous. Do not proceed if you find thick line-voltage conductors, cannot identify the equipment or terminals, or have complex HVAC controls. Contact an experienced HVAC professional or electrician.
  4. Connect and mount the new thermostat. Following the model’s wiring diagram, move the conductors to the indicated terminals, mount the base, and attach the display. Restore power only when the guide says to do so.

ENERGY STAR recommends seeking professional help when compatibility is uncertain or installation assistance is needed. Its general guidance is not a model-specific wiring manual. ENERGY STAR smart thermostat guidance

ENERGY STAR recommends placing a Wi-Fi thermostat reasonably close to the router. If the thermostat is too far away and the connection is unreliable, improving router proximity or using a range extender may help. ENERGY STAR smart thermostat guidance

What ENERGY STAR certification does—and does not—tell you

ENERGY STAR certification is based on aggregated real-world data and program criteria; it is not a promise of a specific household’s bill savings. ENERGY STAR’s criteria include heating-runtime reductions of at least 8% for the lower 95% confidence limit of the weighted national average and at least 4% for the weighted national average of 20th percentiles. For cooling, the corresponding criteria are at least 10% and at least 5%. These are product qualification criteria, not guaranteed savings for an individual home.
