Set up a Shopify store by deciding how and where you will sell, configuring your business and transaction settings, building the storefront, and testing the full order flow before launch. The ten steps below follow Shopify’s setup guidance, but you can change their order to fit your products and business. Payment options, sales channels, plan features, and hardware vary by country, product type, and subscription plan.
1. Decide what you will sell and where
Before creating the store, define your products, audience, and sales channels. Shopify’s General checklist for starting a new Shopify store recommends clarifying your goals first.
- Online only: Focus on your online storefront, checkout, shipping, and customer communications.
- In person: Consider whether you need Shopify POS and compatible hardware; availability varies by country.
- Social or other channels: Check each channel’s current country, product, and account requirements before planning around it.
Also estimate the size of your catalog and decide whether you will ship orders, offer pickup or local delivery, or use more than one fulfillment method.
2. Create your Shopify account
Start account creation and follow Shopify’s onboarding prompts. The available setup screens and options may change. Shopify’s getting-started material explains the onboarding process and initial store setup.

- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
Choose your store name carefully. Shopify’s checklist says the myshopify.com domain can only be changed once during initial setup, so verify the current rule and the name shown in your account before proceeding.
3. Enter business details and store standards
Complete the business information that Shopify uses for billing, customer-facing details, and store operations. Confirm these settings against your business records.
- Business name and address
- Billing information
- Default currency and weight unit
- Contact information that customers can find
Set your currency and weight unit with your intended customers and fulfillment practices in mind. If you sell in multiple markets, review the market settings in the next step rather than assuming the default covers every destination.
4. Configure payments, markets, taxes, and fulfillment
Complete the settings that determine where customers can buy, how they pay, what they are charged, and how orders reach them. Provider availability and features vary by region, plan, and product type; check the options available in your Shopify admin.
Payments and markets
Choose the payment providers available to your business and configure the markets where you intend to sell. Confirm which currencies and payment methods customers in each market can use.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Taxes
Review tax settings for the places where you sell. Shopify says tax calculation does not mean Shopify files or remits taxes for you, except when Shopify Tax automated filing is used. Tax obligations depend on your circumstances and jurisdiction; consult local tax authorities or a qualified professional when needed.
Shipping, pickup, and delivery
Set shipping zones, rates, and any relevant fulfillment options. If you offer local pickup or delivery, configure those methods and make sure the details customers see match how you can fulfill orders.
Before launch, ensure that the rates and destinations shown at checkout reflect the service you actually intend to provide.
5. Add policies and configure checkout
Prepare customer-facing store policies and review the account and checkout choices available in your admin. Shopify’s setup checklist includes refund, privacy, and terms policies, customer accounts, and checkout settings.
- Add refund, privacy, and terms information appropriate to your business and jurisdiction.
- Set customer account and checkout preferences.
- Make contact information easy to find.
Policy text should reflect your actual practices and applicable local requirements. Shopify’s setup material is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.

6. Connect a domain and authenticate sender email
Connect the domain customers will use to visit your store, then check that your store email is configured for reliable delivery. Shopify’s checklist says sender authentication using SPF and DKIM is required by major email providers such as Gmail and Yahoo; messages may otherwise be treated as spam. Follow Shopify’s current instructions for your domain provider and sender address.
Check your domain connection and authentication status before launch so that storefront access and customer emails are ready together.
7. Choose and customize a theme
Select a theme and customize the storefront to fit your products and brand. Review the customer experience on both desktop and mobile, including product discovery, navigation, and the information a shopper needs before buying.
Use a preview to inspect your changes before making the store public. Add only features and apps that serve a clear need; confirm their current availability and any plan or regional requirements before relying on them.
8. Add products, collections, and navigation
Add product listings with accurate titles, prices, descriptions, images, and any relevant variant, inventory, tax, or shipping details. Shopify says a product needs at least a title and price. The time involved grows with catalog size, so plan the product information and organization before entering a large catalog.

Organize the catalog
Create collections that help customers browse related items, then add them to clear navigation. Shopify partner guidance describes CSV import as an option for adding multiple products. Review imported data carefully, especially prices, variants, inventory, and product details.
Recommended Free Tools
Build essential information pages
Consider pages such as About, Contact, FAQs, refund, shipping, and privacy information. Add links to the relevant pages in your navigation or footer so customers can find them.
Keep product URLs stable
Choose concise product titles and avoid changing product URL handles frequently; Shopify warns that repeated URL changes can affect search rankings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Preview the store and place a test order
Shopify recommends placing at least one test order during setup and whenever payment settings change. A test order can help check checkout, order processing, inventory, shipping, and taxes. Shopify’s Preparing your Shopify store for launch guidance says test orders do not incur charges.
- Preview the storefront and check key pages, links, and product details.
- Place a test order using a test method supported by your payment setup.
- Review the resulting order, inventory changes, shipping, taxes, and customer notifications.
- If Shopify Payments test mode is enabled, turn it off before accepting real payments.
Fix any mismatches between what checkout displays and what you can actually charge or fulfill, then test again after relevant payment-setting changes.

10. Select a plan, launch, and add channels if needed
Shopify requires you to select a subscription plan during a free trial to launch the store. Compare the current plan details in your account against the features your business needs; pricing and entitlements can change.
Before making the store public, finalize policies, customer contact details, and shipping rates. Preview the site once more, then launch the online store. Shopify states that the store becomes publicly visible when launched.
Add sales channels only when you meet their requirements
Additional channels are optional, and eligibility can change. For example, Shopify’s checklist says Google & YouTube requires a Merchant Center account, visible contact details, refund and terms policies, shipping to supported countries, and product identifiers such as GTIN, MPN, or brand. TikTok availability is limited to listed countries, and products must comply with regional prohibited-product rules. Check each channel’s current requirements before connecting it.
If you plan to sell in person, verify current POS hardware compatibility and availability for your country rather than assuming a particular device will work.
