To set up a Galaxy A57 and move data from an older phone, transfer during the initial setup: use Samsung Smart Switch or Android’s copy flow if the old phone is available. If it isn’t, restore a Google Account backup instead—but only if a backup exists. Some downloads, app data, and other content may need separate recovery.
Before you start
- Charge both phones and make sure the A57 has enough storage for the content you want to move.
- Have the old phone’s screen-lock PIN or password available; setup may ask for it.
- Connect the A57 to Wi-Fi or another working internet connection.
- If you plan to transfer by cable, check the ports on both phones and use a cable or adapter that fits. You can choose wireless transfer if you do not have a suitable cable.
- Allow time for the copy to finish. Google says device-to-device transfers can take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the transfer.
Google recommends transferring during setup because the option may not be available afterward. Exact screens can vary by software version, carrier, country, source device, and setup path.
Start the Galaxy A57 setup
- Turn on the A57. On the welcome screen, select a language and tap Start.
- Review and accept the terms if you want to continue.
- Choose the Smart Switch or easy setup option if you have the old phone with you. If you do not, continue with setup and use the backup restore option when prompted.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and follow the prompts. Where offered, choose whether to activate mobile service now or later.
- Continue through the remaining setup screens. Some wording and choices differ by carrier and setup route.

Choose a transfer method

Neither the official setup guidance nor the available transfer information establishes that cable is always faster than wireless; transfer time depends on the devices and content.

Transfer data when the old phone is available
Use Samsung Smart Switch from A57 setup
- On the A57, choose the Galaxy or Android device option in the transfer flow. Choose iPhone or iPad if that matches your old device.
- Follow the A57’s prompt to display a QR code.
- Use the old device to scan the QR code, then follow the instructions shown on both phones.
- Choose the categories you want to copy and start the transfer.
- Keep both devices available and wait until each reports that the transfer is complete. Some apps may still need to finish installing before they open.

Use Android’s device-to-device copy flow
- When the A57 asks whether to copy apps and data, tap Copy.
- Follow the prompts to connect the old phone by cable, or choose No cable for wireless transfer if that option appears.
- Unlock the old phone and follow the on-screen instructions. Enter its screen-lock PIN if requested.
- Select what to copy, start the transfer, and leave both phones connected or nearby until the process finishes.

Restore a Google backup without the old phone
- During the A57’s setup, reach the step for copying apps and data.
- Choose the option to continue without a cable or without the old device, as presented on screen.
- Select the backup associated with the Google Account used on the old phone. Sign in to that account if asked.
- Enter the old phone’s PIN if prompted, then choose the available data types and tap Restore.
- Continue setup and allow the phone time to restore the selected content and install apps.
This route works only if Google backup was enabled on the old device and a usable backup is available. It cannot recover content that was never included in that backup. Google advises doing the transfer during setup because the restore option may not be available later.
What transfers—and what may need separate recovery
Android’s setup transfer can include apps and some app data, music, photos and videos, contacts stored on the phone or SIM, text messages and their multimedia, call history, wallpaper, and many phone settings. The exact result depends on the phone, Android version, backup settings, and the apps involved.

Google lists several kinds of content that may not copy through the standard setup flow:
- Downloads such as PDFs.
- Photos, videos, or music stored in hidden folders.
- Apps installed from outside Google Play.
- Data from apps that do not use Android backup.
- Non-Google accounts and their data, plus contacts or calendars synced outside Google.
- Ringtones and some device settings.
These are general Android transfer limitations, not A57-specific defects. Check the source phone and any cloud or account services you use for content outside the standard transfer.

Finish app-specific restores and check missing content
Restore app data from each app
Open the apps you rely on and sign in with the same accounts used on the old phone. Some apps provide their own restore process or require a backup that was enabled before switching. Google specifically notes that WhatsApp conversations can be restored from its cloud after you sign in and open the app, but only if WhatsApp backup was enabled on the old device.
Look for items that did not move
- Check Downloads and any folders or galleries that were hidden on the old phone.
- Verify contacts and calendars tied to non-Google accounts by signing in to those accounts.
- For apps that do not use Android backup, check the app’s own account, export, or restore options.
- If an app is still installing, wait for installation to finish before troubleshooting it.
Galaxy A57 software and update support
Samsung announced the Galaxy A57 with Android 16 and One UI 8.5 in March 2026. That describes its software at announcement, not necessarily the version on every handset or the version a reader will see after setup; availability can depend on market and carrier. Samsung also announced up to six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and up to six years of security updates for the A57 and A37 series.
