Match projector brightness and screen type to the light that remains. A brighter projector or an ambient light rejecting (ALR) screen can help, but neither can cancel sunlight or room light reflected from the screen.
1. Check the room’s light when you’ll watch
Look at the screen wall during your usual viewing time. Note whether daylight is indirect, diffused through several windows, or shining directly on the screen. Check ceiling lights and lamps too: light aimed at the projection surface reduces perceived contrast, color saturation and dynamic range. Legrand AV’s screen guidance explains how ambient light competes with projector light on a standard screen.
If sunlight reaches the screen, curtains or shades are a sensible first fix. A brighter projector adds projected light; it does not remove the ambient light the screen reflects.
2. Choose a screen size that works from your seats
Start with the primary seating position, not the projector’s maximum advertised image size. Epson UK suggests a screen covering about 30% to 50% of the viewer’s field of view. Its general small-room/living-room example is a 50–100-inch screen viewed from 1.5–3 metres. These are starting points, not a prescription for every room; viewing preference, screen placement and room layout matter.

Measure your intended viewing distance and mark the screen dimensions on the wall before committing. A screen that is too large for the seating distance can be uncomfortable, while a smaller image is easier to illuminate than a larger one with the same projector and settings.
3. Confirm projector placement before mounting
Choose the screen size and seating arrangement first, then measure the available distance from the projector lens to the screen. Room depth alone is not enough: the projector’s lens position and model-specific throw ratio determine the image size at a given distance. Standard-throw units need more space; short-throw and ultra-short-throw (UST) models can create a large image closer to the screen.

Check the exact model’s throw calculator or lens table before buying or installing. Epson’s projector buying guide describes throw types, while BenQ’s living-room projector guide covers fixed placement and mounting considerations.
For a ceiling mount, verify the mounting pattern, cable route and whether lens shift or the projector’s offset can align the picture with the screen. Avoid relying on digital keystone correction as a substitute for correct physical placement when you can position the projector properly.

4. Match brightness to the light and image size
Published brightness ranges can help narrow the choice, but they are vendor recommendations rather than universal thresholds. Epson UK suggests 2,500–3,500 lumens for a living room with some ambient light and 3,500 or more for a bright room. XGIMI’s August 26, 2026 daytime-viewing guide suggests about 2,000 ISO lumens as a practical starting point for indirect daylight and 3,000 or more ISO lumens for multiple windows with diffused light. Actual results also depend on image size, screen gain, projector settings and the direction and intensity of room light.
Do not compare ISO and ANSI lumen figures as though they were interchangeable. Check which measurement method a manufacturer uses, and look for both white brightness and color brightness where they are stated. Epson says color brightness can differ substantially from white brightness and, in some cases, may be as little as one-third of the stated white-brightness figure. Epson says its projectors specify white brightness under ISO 21118 and color brightness under IDMS 15.4; this measurement description applies to Epson’s stated practice, not automatically to other brands. 5. Choose a standard screen or an ALR screen
A standard matte screen is a reasonable choice when you can control the room light. If light remains, an ALR screen may reject some light arriving from particular directions while reflecting projector light toward viewers. Its effectiveness depends on the screen construction, projector type and position, light direction, gain and seating angle. It reduces the impact of some ambient light; it does not eliminate it.
Match the screen to the projector’s throw type. Standard- or long-throw projectors and UST projectors may need different ALR screen designs. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance, gain and viewing angle, especially if people sit far off-center. Higher gain can make the image appear brighter near the center while reducing brightness or shifting color for viewers at an angle.

Legrand AV / Da-Lite describes contrast-based and true-optical ALR constructions. Its FAQ cites up to 80% ambient-light blocking for a contrast-based type and up to 99% rejection from specific angles for a true-optical type. Those are category descriptions from the supplier, not guaranteed results for every product or room.

A table or shelf keeps a projector movable and avoids a permanent installation, but may constrain placement or put equipment in the way. A ceiling mount can make a fixed setup neater; before drilling, confirm mounting compatibility, lens alignment options and cable routing. The room’s available lens-to-screen distance and the projector’s throw specifications may decide the issue more than preference.

- Reduce direct sunlight or light aimed at the screen where practical.
- Choose screen dimensions based on the primary seats and viewing distance.
- Measure lens-to-screen distance and verify the exact projector’s throw specifications.
- Compare brightness ratings only after checking their measurement methods and color-brightness information.
- If considering ALR, confirm compatibility with the projector’s throw type and the room’s light and seating angles.
- Before a permanent mount, check alignment options, mounting pattern and cable route.
