You can secure your PlayStation Network account with a passkey or with two-step verification (2SV). Set either up under Account Management > Security; on a PS5, you can also start passkey setup from the console. Choose a method your devices support, then set up a recovery route before you lose access to your phone or passkey device.
Choose between a passkey and 2-step verification
A passkey replaces password entry for sign-in and uses a device-based method such as biometrics or a screen-lock PIN. PlayStation Support describes passkeys as a way to log in using a fingerprint, face scan, or screen-lock PIN; that is Sony’s description, not an independent security comparison. Sony also offers 2SV codes through an authenticator app or SMS.

Sony’s setup instructions do not establish that one option is always more secure than the other. The practical choice depends on whether your devices support passkeys, what you can use at sign-in, and how you will recover access if that device is unavailable. Set up a PlayStation passkey
Set it up in Account Management
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Open Security and enable Sign in with Passkey.
- Select Create a Passkey.
- Choose where to create the passkey and follow the on-screen prompts.
Sony says it sends an email confirmation after the passkey is created successfully.

Start setup on PS5
- On PS5, open Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey.
- Scan the QR code with a mobile device.
- Select Create a Passkey on the mobile device and follow the prompts.
If the passkey option is missing or setup fails, check that your device and browser meet Sony’s requirements. Menu labels and availability can differ by device or software version. Sony’s passkey guide also explains how to manage passkeys and switch back to password sign-in.
Set up 2-step verification
Use Account Management
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management and select Security.
- Beside 2-Step Verification Status, select Edit.
- Choose Authenticator App or Text Message.
- For SMS, enter your mobile number. For an authenticator app, scan the QR code. If scanning does not work, enter the alphanumeric code shown into the app.
- Enter the verification code you receive and select Activate.
- Save the backup codes somewhere you can access if your phone is unavailable.
Use a console
- PS5: Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- PS4: Open Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Security > 2-Step Verification.
Console menu wording can vary by system software version or region. If the path differs, use Account Management’s Security page or check the current on-screen labels. Sony’s 2SV instructions cover activation and backup codes.

Prepare for sign-in problems and device loss
Keep 2SV backup codes
Sony provides ten backup codes, each usable once. If you cannot receive your usual code, sign in and choose Trouble Receiving Code? > Sign In Using a Backup Code, then enter one of the saved codes. If you have used most of the codes, Sony says you can get new ones by turning off 2SV and activating it again. Without a backup code or phone access, contact PlayStation Support. If a passkey device is lost
If you lose your phone but have another device with the same verification method registered, use that device to sign in and register a new passkey. If no other device works, contact Sony’s Online Assistant for account recovery.

Troubleshoot verification and passkey sign-in
2SV code does not arrive or work
- A 2SV code is valid for ten minutes after the sign-in attempt. If it expires, choose Resend Code.
- For a missing SMS or authenticator code, Sony recommends resending, restarting your phone, checking that airplane mode is off, and checking mobile signal.
- Sony says 2SV may be requested after you enable it for the first time, manually sign out, reset your account password, or change your sign-in ID or online ID.
- If you still cannot get a code, use a saved backup code or contact PlayStation Support.
Passkey sign-in fails
Choose Can’t Sign In with Passkey and try the available email or QR-code sign-in option. Sony notes that an outdated browser and some Android-to-Windows combinations can cause problems. Its passkey help page includes further sign-in and management guidance.
