To set up a new smartwatch without risking the data you care about, first confirm phone compatibility, make a backup or verify account sync, then use the manufacturer’s app to pair or transfer the watch. Keep your old phone and watch until the new setup is working and you have checked that the expected data has appeared. Apple Watch, Pixel Watch, and Galaxy Watch use different processes; do not assume health history will move between brands.
Before you start: check compatibility and prepare both devices
Find the exact watch and phone models, then confirm that the phone supports the watch and has the required companion app. Have the relevant account credentials and watch passcode ready. Keep the old phone and watch available until setup and syncing are complete.
- Install available updates on the old phone and watch before starting, where the manufacturer allows it.
- Charge both devices and connect to Wi-Fi when the setup flow requires it.
- For Apple’s new-iPhone procedure, Apple requires Wi-Fi on both iPhones and at least 50 percent charge on the Apple Watch and new iPhone. This requirement applies to that Apple workflow, not to every smartwatch transfer. See Apple’s instructions for pairing an Apple Watch with a new iPhone.
Back up or sync data before switching
Do this before unpairing, erasing, trading in, or handing over the old device. What carries over depends on the ecosystem and backup method; a watch backup should not be treated as a guarantee that every category of health history will migrate.
Apple Watch: check iCloud Health sync or use an encrypted computer backup
When moving an Apple Watch to a new iPhone, check that Health data is syncing with iCloud. If you back up the old iPhone to a computer instead, encrypt that backup to preserve Health and Activity content. Back up the old iPhone before setting up the new one. Pixel Watch: start the backup ahead of time
Google recommends backing up before changing devices. For the backup, the watch must be on Wi-Fi and on its charger while you start the process in the phone app. Google says backup can take up to a few days, so begin well before you plan to switch; this is Google’s stated time guidance, not a measured typical duration. Galaxy Watch: create a backup in Galaxy Wearable
On the connected phone, open Galaxy Wearable > Watch settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data. During reconnection, Galaxy Wearable may offer a saved backup to restore. Samsung documents this flow in its Galaxy Watch reconnection instructions.

Move your existing watch to a new phone
Apple Watch and a new iPhone
- Back up the old iPhone, then restore or transfer that iPhone data to the new iPhone using Apple’s setup process.
- Keep the Apple Watch unlocked on your wrist and near the new iPhone.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the new iPhone and follow the prompts to pair or restore the watch.
- If the new iPhone asks you to start pairing instead of recognizing the watch, Apple’s guidance is to unpair the watch and set it up again.
Use Apple’s pairing instructions for the current prompts and backup details.
Pixel Watch and a new phone
- On the watch, open Settings > System and start Transfer watch.
- Start the transfer from the Pixel Watch app on the old phone as well.
- On the new phone, add the watch in the Pixel Watch app. Confirm that the pairing code shown on the phone and watch matches.
- Sign in to the Google Account if prompted, then finish the transfer in the app.
Google says the old pairing is removed only after a successful transfer. For an LTE watch, the flow checks whether the new phone has the same number; if it does not, you may be prompted to set up number twinning with the new number. See Google’s Pixel Watch transfer instructions.

Galaxy Watch and a new phone
Reconnect the watch through the Galaxy Wearable app on the new phone and follow its prompts. If a saved backup is available, the app may offer a restore option. The exact flow can depend on the watch and software; Samsung’s reconnection guide covers its documented steps.
Set up a replacement watch
Replacement Pixel Watch
In the Pixel Watch app, add a watch and select an available backup during setup. Google says a replacement Pixel Watch can restore apps, data, settings, watch face, and tiles. Check Google’s upgrade and restore instructions for the options shown on your devices.

Replacement Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch
For an Apple Watch, use the Apple Watch app’s setup flow and restore from the available iPhone backup when prompted. For a Galaxy Watch, reconnect in Galaxy Wearable and choose a saved backup if the app offers one. In both cases, what is available depends on the backup and sync state; consult the relevant Apple or Samsung instructions.

Health data handling is not identical across platforms. Apple’s instructions distinguish between iCloud Health sync and an encrypted computer backup for retaining Health and Activity content. Google documents backup and restore for Pixel Watch, while Samsung’s reconnection instructions describe backing up and restoring through Galaxy Wearable. These platform-specific steps do not establish that health history can be transferred between different watch brands or health services; treat cross-brand migration as uncertain and check the destination platform’s own import and sync support before switching.

Cloud backup is also not universal across Wear OS watches. Android Developers describes cloud backup and restore for supported devices running Wear OS 4 or higher; that does not mean every watch on that version necessarily supports the feature. Check the Wear OS cloud backup documentation and the watch maker’s instructions for the exact model.
Verify the transfer before wiping or giving away the old devices
Once setup finishes, check the new phone and watch before resetting either old device:

- Confirm that the watch is connected to the new phone and that the companion app shows it as paired.
- Check for the apps, settings, watch face, or other items you expected to restore.
- Open the relevant health app and confirm that its data is syncing or that the expected history is visible.
