To set up a new MacBook Pro, open the lid, connect to Wi-Fi when prompted, choose whether to migrate data now or later, and follow Setup Assistant to create your Mac account and review the settings offered. You can transfer from another Mac, a Windows PC, a Time Machine backup or storage device, or—if your devices meet Apple’s requirements—a nearby iPhone or iPad. You can also set up the Mac as new and migrate later.
Before you begin
- Connect power if needed. Your MacBook Pro arrives with charge. Apple recommends connecting the included power adapter and cable if you want to charge it fully or plan to transfer data.
- Have an internet connection available. Some parts of Setup Assistant require internet, and your Mac may need an update during initial setup.
- Decide whether to migrate now. If you have an old computer or backup ready, you can transfer during setup. Otherwise, set up as new and use Migration Assistant later.
Apple’s instruction is simple: “Open the lid and you’re ready to set up your MacBook Pro.” See Apple’s MacBook Pro setup guide. Screen labels and available options can vary by macOS version, language, region, and hardware.
Complete Setup Assistant
- Open the lid and follow the on-screen prompts. Connect the power adapter if appropriate, then select your language, country or region, and other requested basics.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Internet access is needed for some setup steps and may be required to install an update.
- Choose a transfer option—or choose not to transfer. Setup Assistant offers migration paths when applicable. The right choice depends on what device or backup you have and whether you want to bring data over now.
- Set up accessibility features if useful. Review the available options during setup; you can use them to tailor the Mac to your needs.
- Create your Mac user account. Choose a strong, unique password. Your Mac login is separate from your Apple Account.
- Decide whether to sign in with your Apple Account. Use your own account if you want Apple services and content associated with it. You can review the available choices shown during setup.
- Review optional settings. Setup Assistant may offer Location Services, Screen Time, Touch ID, Siri, and Apple Intelligence. Availability and prompts depend on the Mac, macOS version, region, and language; Apple Intelligence features in particular have language and region limitations.

Choose the right way to transfer your data
Compare the source you have, whether you want to transfer now, and whether a wired or wireless connection is practical. Apple says you can transfer during setup or later with Migration Assistant; its MacBook Pro migration guide covers the supported routes.

Transfer from another Mac
Use Migration Assistant if you want to bring data from an older Mac. Update both computers first, then open Migration Assistant on both and follow the prompts to select the source and destination. A wireless connection is an option when the Macs meet Apple’s network requirements; a direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection is often faster. Apple does not promise a particular transfer duration, so avoid relying on an estimate when planning your setup.

Transfer from a Windows PC
For a PC-to-Mac move, install the Windows Migration Assistant version appropriate for your PC and follow its instructions. You can choose the Windows transfer route in Setup Assistant or start Migration Assistant on the Mac after initial setup. The exact version to use depends on the PC and destination macOS; follow Apple’s migration instructions rather than assuming one installer fits every Windows computer.
Use an iPhone or iPad for nearby setup
Apple’s nearby-device setup can transfer some settings and use iCloud settings to retrieve content from Apple apps. It is not the same as copying every item stored on your mobile device. The documented minimums are macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later, iOS 18.4 or later, or iPadOS 18.4 or later, as applicable. Set up as new and transfer later
If you want to start using the Mac before deciding what to move, choose not to transfer data during Setup Assistant. That choice does not automatically copy your old files or settings, but you can run Migration Assistant later. It is a practical option when your old computer or backup is not ready, or when you want to decide what to bring over after exploring the new Mac.

FileVault
FileVault is Apple’s feature for protecting data on your Mac. Review Apple’s current FileVault guide for the instructions that match your macOS version. The setup choices and defaults can vary, so check the current settings on your Mac rather than assuming a particular configuration.

Time Machine
Time Machine backs up files to a suitable storage device. If you plan to use it, check the drive’s compatibility, capacity, and connection against your Mac and backup needs; no specific drive model or capacity is established here. Apple’s Time Machine guide explains how to back up your files.

What to do if you postpone migration
- Keep the previous Mac, PC, or backup available until you know you have everything you need on the new Mac.
- When ready, open Migration Assistant and select the source that matches your old computer or backup.
- If the old computer’s disk is damaged, a Time Machine backup or other storage source may still provide a migration path.
